Custom RTMP Streaming: How to Stream to YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream to YouTube with a custom RTMP encoder, open YouTube Studio > Create > Go Live, choose or create a stream, then enter that stream’s URL and key in your encoder. Prefer the RTMPS URL revealed by the lock control beside Stream URL. Configure a compatible codec, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval; start sending the feed; check the Live Control Room preview; then click Go live for a scheduled event.

What the Stream URL and stream key do

The Stream URL is the server destination your encoder sends video to. The stream key identifies and authorizes your feed. In the encoder, put each value in its matching destination/server or stream-key field. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder; only a channel owner or manager can reset it. YouTube’s stream settings guide explains stream key management.

Create or select a YouTube live stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
  2. On the Stream tab, create a stream or select an existing one. For a future event, schedule it from the Manage tab.
  3. Review the title, description, visibility and other metadata. YouTube may reuse prior settings, including a stream key, so check that the details fit this broadcast.
  4. Open stream settings and copy the Stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder.

For encrypted ingest, use the lock control beside Stream URL to reveal the RTMPS address. YouTube may display a regular RTMP URL by default; do not assume that it is the secure endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which applies TLS/SSL to RTMP. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

Set compatible encoder options

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Encoder menus differ, so use the closest supported options and verify the live guidance before an important event. The complete, changeable recommendations are in YouTube’s encoder settings.

Resolution, frame rate and bitrate

Choose a resolution and frame rate your production can sustain, then match the bitrate to both that output and its codec. The figures below are YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended encoder-ingest bitrates; they are not a guarantee of the bitrate viewers receive, because YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats.

Output AV1/H.265 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
1080p, 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 8 Mbps 30 Mbps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p (4K), 60 fps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are the values in YouTube Help’s encoder table, checked on 2026-10-03; the page does not state a publication year and settings can change. Consult its current table for other formats or updates. YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 2160p streams, which are set to normal latency.

Keyframes, audio and advanced options

  • Keyframes: set a 2-second keyframe interval if your encoder exposes the control; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps. For 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, it requires AAC and lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
  • Picture encoding: YouTube’s advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC.
  • Color: SDR recommendations include Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, the guidance specifies 10-bit and H.265 over RTMP(S); AV1 is not supported for HDR in this guidance.

Not every encoder exposes every option. Prioritize a stable signal and compatible settings over forcing controls your software or hardware does not support.

Check upload capacity before the event

Run an upload speed test from the network and location you will use for the broadcast. YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom over the total bitrate. Shared household or office use can reduce the capacity available to the encoder. If sending primary and backup feeds, count both in the bandwidth budget. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Test the feed, preview and go live

  1. Before the event, run a realistic test that includes audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast.
  2. Start the encoder’s output and wait for the signal to appear in Live Control Room. Check the preview for picture and sound, then review stream health and any error messages.
  3. For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. For a stream started immediately, the encoder’s start action sends the feed and creates the watch page.
  4. Check the channel or watch page, including on a mobile device, to confirm the audience-facing result.

Arrange the encoder and verify its settings before the event rather than troubleshooting while viewers are waiting. A webcam is optional: it is relevant to camera-facing shows, not required for a screen or gameplay broadcast or for the RTMP connection itself.

Choose visibility and latency for the audience

Set the stream to public, private or unlisted according to who should be able to watch. Consider the trade-off between latency and playback stability: YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering. Enable DVR if viewers need to pause or rewind. Review these choices in the stream’s settings; the options and interface may change. YouTube’s live stream settings page covers the available controls.

End the broadcast and understand archiving

Stop sending the feed from the encoder, then use the relevant end control in Live Control Room. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived. For a later broadcast, reused settings can save setup time, but review the key, metadata and privacy again. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Troubleshoot common connection and feed problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Encoder connects to the wrong endpoint Old or incorrect server address, or RTMP selected when secure RTMPS ingest is intended Copy the URL from the current stream’s Live Control Room. For RTMPS, confirm the address begins with rtmps.
SSL error Incorrect RTMPS URL or port configuration Verify the exact URL shown for the stream. YouTube suggests trying port 443 when an SSL error persists; use the stream-specific address, not an illustrative example.
Connection timeout Endpoint mismatch or encoder that does not support RTMPS Confirm the server URL and check whether the encoder supports the protocol selected.
No preview in Live Control Room Wrong URL or key, encoder not sending, or preview has not arrived yet Check both copied values and confirm the encoder is sending a signal. For a scheduled stream, wait for preview before selecting Go live.
Dropped frames or unstable video Bitrate exceeds usable upload bandwidth or the network is busy Compare total bitrate with measured upload capacity, account for shared network use and leave the recommended 20% headroom.
YouTube detects the wrong resolution Automatic detection or encoder output does not match the intended format YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. For manual selection, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.

Keep channel and content requirements in view

YouTube Help’s current limits, checked on 2026-10-03, are 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; these platform limits can change, so confirm them on YouTube’s live streaming requirements page before coordinating multiple feeds. Only stream material you have the rights to use, including music, game audio, clips and other people’s video. A technically valid RTMP connection does not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted material or guarantee monetization. Review YouTube’s policies and your rights before going live; the copyright safety checklist can help you check content before streaming.

Choose a software or hardware encoder

For a straightforward screen or gameplay stream, a software encoder may be sufficient if it supports YouTube’s ingest settings and your computer and upload connection can sustain the chosen output. A hardware encoder can suit a higher-production event; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for that use. Compare the actual encoder options for RTMPS support, codec and resolution support, production complexity and the upload capacity available to you. YouTube’s streaming tips name Wirecast as a software example, but no particular encoder model is ranked here.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo handles the looping in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams what you uploaded, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery and StreamNeo team support. It is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a live camera feed. Visit StreamNeo or start the free first day.
