Cyberpunk 2077’s yellow was a deliberate identity choice: the team wanted a color that would be memorable and feel fresh beside the red and blue often associated with cyberpunk. Lead environment artist Michał Janiszewski also invoked the instantly recognizable Coca-Cola bottle as an example of distinctive design, according to 2022 reports of his remarks at Digital Dragons.
Why did Cyberpunk 2077 use yellow instead of red and blue?
Janiszewski said the team wanted a new, fresh color rather than relying on the familiar cyberpunk association with red and a little blue. Game World Observer reproduced his explanation this way: “Most people, when they are thinking about cyberpunk, it is like a red color, a bit of blue,” Janiszewski explained, “but we wanted to have something new, something fresh; that’s why we picked the yellow color. It is new, it is like ‘California style’.”

The remark is reported by Game World Observer, which links to an IGN article. The original IGN page was not available for direct verification here, so the quotation is best understood as Janiszewski’s words as reproduced by that report.
What did Coca-Cola have to do with the color?
Game World Observer says Janiszewski compared the game’s recognizable signature color with the Coca-Cola glass bottle: a design that can be identified around the world. The point was memorability and clear identity, not that Cyberpunk 2077 copied Coca-Cola’s branding. StopGame’s report likewise describes the bottle as an inspiration for choosing a distinctive color.

StopGame also says the team wanted Cyberpunk 2077 to stand apart from familiar genre influences such as Blade Runner and Judge Dredd, rather than feel like only an homage to them. The yellow helped give the game its own visual identity.

CD Projekt RED’s official visual-style guide presents several styles used in the game world. It describes Kitsch with the phrase “Style over Substance,” illustrating that appearance is part of the setting’s deliberate design. That context supports reading color as an intentional artistic choice, but it does not give a separate technical explanation for the yellow.

In a later CD Projekt RED level-design podcast transcript, the studio discusses visual cues and guidance that fit a game’s artistic vision and, where possible, feel as if they belong in the world. That is general context about visual language—not evidence that the game’s signature yellow was chosen as a navigation marker.
