Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.2 delivered a genuine performance improvement for Intel’s Arrow Lake desktop processors, but the widely repeated “up to 33%” figure was a best-case claim—not a typical frame-rate gain. CD Projekt Red’s patch notes described a threading-system optimization for Intel Arrow Lake CPUs. In one independent before-and-after test, however, a Core Ultra 9 285K gained roughly 8% in average FPS, while its 1% lows barely changed.
That makes Update 2.2 a meaningful game-specific correction for Core Ultra 200S owners, not proof that Arrow Lake suddenly became 33% faster across gaming.

What Update 2.2 changed
Released on December 10, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, Update 2.2 included new character and vehicle customization, Photo Mode features, quest changes, and quality-of-life improvements. Its relevant PC performance note was much narrower:
CD Projekt Red said it had “optimized” the game’s threading system to improve performance by up to 33% on Intel Arrow Lake-based CPUs.

The studio did not explain which CPU models benefited most, whether the percentage referred to average FPS, minimum FPS, frame-time consistency, or another workload, or which resolution, graphics preset, GPU, and ray-tracing settings produced the figure. It also did not establish that the same uplift would appear in every part of Night City or in the built-in benchmark.
In other words, this was an Arrow Lake-specific optimization inside Cyberpunk 2077, not a firmware-level fix for the entire processor family.
Why Arrow Lake needed a game-specific fix
Intel’s Core Ultra 200S desktop processors use the Arrow Lake architecture. At launch, chips such as the Core Ultra 9 285K and Core Ultra 5 245K showed uneven gaming performance despite offering strong productivity performance and improved efficiency.

Early testing found the 285K could trail older Intel processors and AMD’s gaming-focused X3D chips. The weakness was not necessarily a simple lack of CPU resources. How a game schedules work across the processor’s cores and threads can be just as important as the nominal core count or clock speed.

That is why a threading optimization can produce a large result in one title without changing the underlying hardware. Intel had also indicated that BIOS, Windows, and game updates could improve Arrow Lake’s gaming behavior. Those platform-level changes make it especially important to separate the effect of Update 2.2 from other changes made between two benchmark runs.
The 33% claim versus what testing showed

PC Gamer measured a modest average gain
In PC Gamer’s test, a Core Ultra 9 285K produced 103 FPS before the update and 110 FPS afterward. The test used an RTX 4070, 1080p resolution, DLSS Balanced, and the game’s built-in benchmark.
That is an increase of approximately 6.8%, often summarized as roughly 8%. The 1% lows rose from 76 FPS to just 77 FPS. So the test demonstrated a real average-FPS improvement, but not a major improvement in the slowest frames or frame-time consistency.
PC Gamer also noted that BIOS changes between the comparisons complicated attribution. The result should therefore be read as evidence of a useful uplift under that test setup—not as a perfectly isolated measurement of the game patch alone.

Tom’s Hardware illustrated the claim rather than validating it
Tom’s Hardware had previously recorded 88.4 FPS for the Core Ultra 9 285K. Applying CD Projekt Red’s maximum claimed uplift mathematically would produce approximately 117.57 FPS. That projection suggested the 285K could approach the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in that particular comparison, although the Ryzen 7 9800X3D remained faster in the cited results.
That 117.57 FPS figure was not a post-update benchmark. It was a calculation showing what a 33% improvement would mean. It should not be reported as though Tom’s Hardware measured the 285K achieving that result after Update 2.2.
Why results can vary so much
A threading optimization is most visible when the CPU is limiting performance and the affected part of the game is using the processor inefficiently. Several factors can hide or magnify the change:
- CPU model: The Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K, and Core Ultra 5 245K may not respond identically. The patch notes do not identify a model-by-model uplift.
- GPU limitation: If the graphics card is already near full utilization, a CPU optimization may produce little or no visible FPS increase.
- Resolution: A 1080p test with a powerful GPU is more likely to expose CPU differences than a 4K test.
- Ray tracing and path tracing: These settings can move more of the workload onto the GPU, masking CPU gains.
- Upscaling: DLSS mode changes the rendering workload and can alter where the bottleneck occurs.
- BIOS, microcode, Windows, and drivers: Platform updates can independently change Arrow Lake performance.
- Test location: The built-in benchmark may not reproduce the most CPU-heavy areas of the open world.
- Metric used: A higher average FPS does not automatically mean smoother frame pacing. The cited PC Gamer test’s nearly unchanged 1% lows are an important qualification.
Later testing also highlighted how BIOS, Windows, microcode, and multiple game patches can overlap. A simple “before versus after” comparison is only reliable when the hardware, software, settings, and test sequence are held constant.

Which CPUs does the optimization affect?
The official wording refers specifically to Intel Arrow Lake-based CPUs, meaning the Core Ultra 200S desktop family. Relevant examples include:
- Intel Core Ultra 9 285K
- Intel Core Ultra 7 265K
- Intel Core Ultra 5 245K
Other Core Ultra 200S desktop variants may also qualify if they use Arrow Lake. The update should not be treated as an equivalent optimization for older Intel processors such as the Core i9-14900K, Core i7-14700K, or Core i5-14600K. They are Intel CPUs, but they are not Arrow Lake desktop chips.
Does Update 2.2 make Arrow Lake competitive?
It makes Arrow Lake more competitive in this specific game, particularly where the original threading behavior was holding performance back. That is valuable: existing owners receive the improvement through a game update rather than a hardware replacement.
But one patched title cannot establish a universal 33% gaming uplift. It also cannot prove that Core Ultra 200S is the best choice for a new gaming system. Buyers should compare broad benchmark suites covering average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time behavior, productivity workloads, power use, platform cost, memory and motherboard pricing, and upgrade options.

AMD’s Ryzen X3D processors—including the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in the historical comparison—remain relevant alternatives for buyers prioritizing gaming performance. Theoretical parity with one model in one Cyberpunk 2077 scenario is not the same as across-the-board gaming leadership.
How to test your own Arrow Lake system
Use a controlled comparison rather than relying on a single run:
- Confirm that the system uses an Arrow Lake desktop CPU, such as the Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K, or Core Ultra 5 245K.
- Record the CPU, GPU, BIOS version, Windows version, game version, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling mode, and ray-tracing or path-tracing settings.
- Close background applications and use the same save, location, and settings for each run.
- Run the built-in benchmark three times before changing anything, then average the results. Record average FPS and 1% lows if available.
- Update Cyberpunk 2077 through your platform client, reboot, and repeat the same three runs.
- Compare average FPS and 1% lows separately. Do not treat a small average increase as proof of smoother frame pacing.
Do not compare 1080p before-and-after results with 1440p or 4K results. Also avoid assigning the entire difference to Update 2.2 if the BIOS, microcode, Windows build, GPU driver, or other game version changed at the same time.

What Arrow Lake owners should do
If you already own an Arrow Lake desktop CPU, install the compatible current game build and keep the motherboard firmware, Windows installation, and graphics driver up to date. Then test using the same settings if you want to quantify the change.
The patch is not a reason by itself to replace a 285K, 265K, or 245K, and it is not evidence that every Arrow Lake gaming problem has been solved. It is best understood as a targeted correction for an unusually weak result in Cyberpunk 2077.
Verdict
Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.2 did give Arrow Lake a real performance boost, and CD Projekt Red’s threading optimization explains why. However, “up to 33%” describes a favorable ceiling with undisclosed test conditions. Independent testing cited a much smaller roughly 8% average gain, with almost no change to 1% lows in that setup.
The accurate takeaway is simple: Update 2.2 improved Arrow Lake performance in Cyberpunk 2077, but it did not make every Arrow Lake CPU 33% faster or transform Intel’s gaming position across the entire market.
