What this file actually does
cygncursesw-10.dll is the Windows DLL build of the wide-character ncurses terminal-display library. Console programs use ncurses to draw menus, status screens, text interfaces, and terminal output, including support for extended character sets.
Cygwin supplies this file through the package named libncursesw10. A normal 64-bit Cygwin installation places it at:
C:cygwin64usrbincygncursesw-10.dll
Older installations may use:
C:cygwinbincygncursesw-10.dll
A vendor application can also include a private bin directory beside its executable. That distinction matters. Installing the package into your regular Cygwin root will not repair a program that uses its own bundled Cygwin runtime.

This is not a Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or COM library. File listings may report unhelpful metadata such as 32-bit, version 0.0.0.0, and a size around 0.32 MB; those values do not reliably identify the correct copy. The executable and its Cygwin environment determine the required architecture and compatible version.

Windows may display messages such as “cygncursesw-10.dll is missing,” “was not found,” or “The code execution cannot proceed.” The exact wording varies by Windows version and by the loader failure. “Module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent.
Fix 1: Reinstall libncursesw10 through Cygwin Setup
This is the correct repair for a standard Cygwin installation and the most likely solution.
- Close the failing program.
- Close every Cygwin terminal, shell, editor, and background Cygwin process.
- Download
setup-x86_64.exefrom the official Cygwin website. - Start Setup.
- Select the same Cygwin root used by the existing installation, normally
C:cygwin64. - Choose the same mirror used previously, if you know it.
- Continue to the package-selection screen.
- Search for
libncursesw10. - Click the package’s
SkiporKeepfield until a current package version is selected. - Continue through Setup and allow it to select required dependencies, including the Cygwin runtime and
terminfo. - Finish the installation and launch the original program again.
Setup may reinstall a file that was partially removed without requiring you to replace DLLs manually. If the program still fails, repeat the process and update the affected Cygwin environment rather than mixing files copied from another installation.

Use it only after adapting the command to the existing root, mirror, and installation policy. The graphical installer is safer when you are unsure which Cygwin installation the application uses.
Confirm the package from a Cygwin terminal
Open the Cygwin Terminal and run:
cygcheck -c libncursesw10
A correctly installed package should be listed with an installed status. To show missing files, run:
cygcheck -v -c libncursesw10
If the package is absent, incomplete, or reports missing files, run Cygwin Setup again. If the package looks correct but the application still will not launch, inspect the actual executable rather than assuming the named DLL is the only problem.
Fix 2: Repair the application that includes its own Cygwin files
Some developer tools, emulator utilities, toolchains, and network applications ship Cygwin libraries privately. Examples reported with this DLL include PSP development utilities, Epson GNU toolchains, Broadcom Spectrum utilities, and standalone command-line programs.
Look in the failing program’s installation directory for files such as:
cygwin1.dll
cygncursesw-10.dll
cyg*.dll
If those files sit in a directory such as bin beside the program executable, the application probably uses a bundled runtime.
Repair it using the vendor’s installer:
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Reinstall the program from the original developer or vendor installer.
- Launch the same executable that previously failed.
For a portable application, download a fresh copy from its original vendor source and replace the complete application folder. Do not copy only cygncursesw-10.dll into it, because the bundle may require a matching cygwin1.dll, terminfo data, and other Cygwin libraries.

If reinstalling normal Cygwin does not change the error, but reinstalling the parent application does, that confirms the program was using a private runtime.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus removed the DLL
Security software can quarantine a Cygwin DLL or interfere with a bundled Cygwin process. This is particularly important when the error appeared immediately after an antivirus update, scheduled scan, or application cleanup.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application directory or
cygncursesw-10.dll. - Select the event to view its details.
- Restore the file only if the application came from a trusted original source and you are confident the detection is incorrect.
- Reinstall
libncursesw10or repair the parent application afterward.
If another antivirus product is installed, open its quarantine or detection-history page instead. Do not simply disable protection and download a DLL from an unknown source. Reinstalling the trusted package gives you a cleaner copy and restores related files.
If the same file is quarantined again, do not keep restoring it blindly. Update the security product, submit the file for review through that product’s normal process, and verify that the application itself has not been modified.

Fix 4: Check architecture and the actual dependency chain
The Windows edition does not decide which DLL architecture the program needs. A 32-bit executable needs a compatible 32-bit runtime, while a 64-bit Cygwin executable needs the x86_64 environment.
First identify the failing executable:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the complete path in Target.
- Check whether the application folder contains its own Cygwin DLLs.
- If the program documentation identifies a 32-bit or 64-bit build, install the matching application and runtime.
From a Cygwin terminal, inspect the program with:
cygcheck /path/to/program.exe
Replace the path with the actual executable path. The output lists the DLL dependencies that Cygwin can resolve. If cygncursesw-10.dll is present but another dependency is missing, repairing only ncurses will not solve the loader error.
You can also search the Cygwin package database:
cygcheck -p 'cygncursesw-10.dll'
This confirms which package contains the filename. It does not make an arbitrary DLL download safe, and it does not prove that the newest package is compatible with an old vendor bundle.
Do not combine a DLL from one Cygwin installation with cygwin1.dll or other libraries from another release. Mixed Cygwin files can produce loading errors, crashes, address conflicts, or fork failures even when the original missing-file message disappears.
Fix 5: Check related drivers only when the application also needs hardware
cygncursesw-10.dll is not a device driver, so Device Manager will not restore it. If the affected program also communicates with USB hardware, an emulator, or a development board and reports a separate driver error, handle that driver independently:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Universal Serial Bus controllers or Ports (COM & LPT).
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Reinstall the hardware vendor’s driver if Windows cannot find one.
Do not install a driver merely because the DLL error appeared. The DLL belongs to the application’s Cygwin runtime, not to Windows device management.
When several hardware drivers are stale, manually identifying the correct package can mean comparing device IDs and vendor versions. - Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the original application.
Microsoft documents these commands in its DISM and SFC repair guidance.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows again, but still repair Cygwin separately. Repeating SFC will not install libncursesw10.

Avoid these common but incorrect fixes:
- Do not copy the file to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Do not copy it to
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not place a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit Cygwin installation, or reverse.
- Do not mix files from different Cygwin releases.
- Do not use
regsvr32.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM components. cygncursesw-10.dll is a runtime library, not a COM server, so registration will not repair it. Microsoft explains the tool’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Random DLL download websites are also risky. A downloaded file can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, have incompatible dependencies, or simply conceal the real problem in the application’s runtime. Use Cygwin Setup for a normal Cygwin installation, or the original vendor installer for a private application bundle.

Is cygncursesw-10.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
No. It is supplied by Cygwin or by an application that bundled Cygwin libraries. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not normally provide it as a protected system component.
