What happened between Prescott and Schottenheimer?
In an Associated Press report by Schuyler Dixon published by The Washington Post on Oct. 2, 2026, Schottenheimer said that before a late third-down play, he used a word he wished he had not used. He did not disclose the word. He said his wording put Prescott into a mindset the quarterback did not normally play with, and accepted responsibility for overcoaching the moment.
Prescott characterized the problem as a term that should have been chosen differently—not an instruction to throw to a particular place and not a breakdown of trust. He described their postgame debrief as “Honest conversations between a head coach and a quarterback.” Schottenheimer said, “This has got nothing to do with trust.”

How the communication issue fit into the final minutes
The Cowboys and Ravens played in Rio de Janeiro on Sept. 27, 2026. After the late third-down play, Prescott quickly threw the ball away. Dallas settled for a field goal that tied the game, leaving Baltimore a chance to win.
Dallas’s kickoff went through the end zone, and the Ravens started their final possession. Lamar Jackson completed a 27-yard pass to move Baltimore into field-goal range. After the Ravens used a timeout with one second remaining, Tyler Loop made a 56-yard kick as time expired to give Baltimore the 34-31 win.

What other decisions did Dallas revisit?
The late sequence included separate choices beyond the coach-quarterback communication. With seven seconds left after Dallas’s tying field goal, the Cowboys kicked through the end zone rather than forcing a return. On defense, coordinator Christian Parker said he had overthought his call and would choose differently if the situation arose again: “So definitely would make a different call if that situation came up again.”
Those acknowledgments concern distinct decisions: Schottenheimer’s wording before the third-down play, the kickoff choice, and Parker’s defensive call. The AP report does not establish that any one of them alone determined the result. Dallas was 1-2 when the report was published and was preparing to visit the Texans.
