Danganronpa 2×2 pairs an updated version of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair with a second mode that changes the chain of events in the same setting, among the same cast. At Tokyo Game Show 2026, RPGFan’s Matt Wardell played an early Original Mode Class Trial and a short Slayhem Mode scene. The demo showed how the original mystery is being refreshed and hinted at how the new route begins—but not where it leads.
What did the TGS 2026 demo show?
Wardell’s October 2, 2026 RPGFan hands-on report describes two separate samples played at the show with director Takahiro Suzuki: an early Class Trial in Original Mode and one scene from Slayhem Mode. Those slices offer a look at the remake’s presentation and the new mode’s premise, not a playthrough of the full game or its alternate story.
Original Mode: a familiar trial with refreshed presentation
In the Original Mode sample, Wardell saw a body discovery and investigation lead into a Class Trial. The core debate still asks players to catch contradictions: aim a crosshair at a point of contention in the dialogue and fire a phrase representing evidence gathered. Wardell found the trial heated and frantic. He also noted that, because he was less familiar with the cast, keeping the characters’ names straight was difficult for him; that is his impression of this demo, not a general measure of the game’s difficulty.
Wardell reports overhauled visuals, rerecorded music, and what appeared to be corrected dialogue typos. According to his account of the interview, Suzuki said the original script was otherwise unchanged, and that Original Mode remains so returning players can revisit the setting alongside the new story. The publisher describes the original scenario as updated with new visuals and production value for modern systems: Spike Chunsoft’s product announcement.

Slayhem Mode: a different chain of events
The Slayhem sample began with Monokuma distributing different secret items to students, setting another chain of events in motion. Wardell also reported newly composed music, a new character named Sakutaro Higashi, and an Akimbo Consensus mechanic. The demo did not establish the route’s eventual victims, culprits, or tricks, so those remain mysteries rather than preview conclusions.
A separate AUTOMATON WEST TGS account, published September 30, also describes a Chapter 1 Class Trial and part of Slayhem Mode. Its writer observed redrawn sprites, animated expressions, smoother effects, and secret Slayhem Items. Together, the two firsthand accounts support the broad picture of a visual refresh and a new route seeded by altered items, but both cover only limited portions of the game.

How do the two modes differ?
The central distinction is story, not setting or cast: Original Mode revisits the Goodbye Despair scenario, while Slayhem Mode changes the events that unfold among those same students. Spike Chunsoft says Slayhem’s scenario volume is equal to or greater than the original’s, though the TGS sample was far too brief to show the scale or shape of that route.
| Mode | What it offers | What the TGS sample established |
|---|---|---|
| Original Mode | An updated presentation of the original Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair story; the publisher says the original scenario is retained. | An early Class Trial with investigation and evidence-based debate, plus refreshed visuals and music reported by Wardell. |
| Slayhem Mode | A different chain of events in the same setting with the same cast, including changed victims, culprits, and tricks according to the publisher. | One scene in which Monokuma distributes different secret items, alongside details including Sakutaro Higashi and Akimbo Consensus, as reported by Wardell. |
The comparison is enough to define the hook, but not to judge whether the new mystery works: the Slayhem portion Wardell played was only a scene, and neither TGS account establishes its outcomes.

What the preview can—and cannot—tell us
The TGS build makes the project’s two-part design concrete: one mode revisits the original scenario with refreshed presentation, while the other starts a changed sequence of events. Wardell’s trial sample also shows that the evidence-and-contradiction structure remains recognizable. But an early trial and a single Slayhem scene cannot establish the quality, pacing, or coherence of the complete new mystery. The most consequential question—how well Slayhem’s changed outcomes develop—is still unanswered by the portions shown.
