Many NPCs are not essential to the main storyline, yet still have an individual quest or another gameplay function. An optional character can therefore matter to a particular playthrough even if the main plot does not require meeting them.

Blacksmiths
Blacksmiths are service NPCs. Their role is practical rather than primarily narrative, making them distinct from characters whose main importance is a quest or story connection.

Merchants and trainers
Merchants and trainers provide another kind of player-facing service. The wiki index groups these roles together, but an individual character’s precise services depend on that character’s entry.
Story-related characters
Some NPCs are associated with character-specific quests or the game’s story. Their presence may be optional to the central progression while still giving the player a separate objective or connection to the world.
Which characters can help or invade?
Summonable phantoms
Some NPCs can be summoned as phantoms to assist the player. A summon is conditional: the relevant character’s appearance and the circumstances for assistance matter, so an NPC should not be assumed to be available for every encounter.

Scripted invaders
Other NPCs can invade the player’s world through scripted events. These are hostile appearances, not a sign that every NPC can invade or that an invasion happens unconditionally. The Dark Souls Wiki’s NPC entries describe the applicable conditions for these appearances.
Does the Remastered roster include DLC characters?
Yes. Bandai Namco describes Dark Souls Remastered as including the main game and Artorias of the Abyss DLC. A Remastered character overview can therefore encompass both the base game and that expansion. The available character references support an organized overview of roles, but not a complete, independently verified biography or checklist of every NPC, boss, and other character.
Is there a Dark Souls character guide?
Future Press publishes a physical Dark Souls Remastered Collector’s Edition Guide.
