datime.dll Not Found: A Safe Repair Path for Windows 11 and 10

The exact message may read: “The program can’t start because datime.dll is missing from your computer.” Other reported variants include “datime.dll was not found,” “Error loading datime.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.”

datime.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, but it is an old one. Its description is TIME, and Microsoft identifies it as part of the legacy Microsoft Time COM component rather than the modern Windows Time service.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first description that matches your situation:

  • Only one old program or game shows the error: repair or reinstall that application from its original installer or media.
  • The error appeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection History before changing system files.
  • Several Windows components are failing: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
  • The problem began after a recent system change: try System Restore.
  • You are using Windows 10 or Windows 11: identify the old application first. Do not assume datime.dll is a normal modern runtime file.
  • The file exists but the application still fails: the application may be 32-bit, or a dependency of datime.dll may be missing.
  • You are considering regsvr32: do not use it as a general DLL repair command. It is relevant only to the file’s old COM registration and will not replace a missing or damaged file.
  • The error mentions a driver or hardware component as well: update the affected driver separately. datime.dll itself is not a driver.

Do not download this DLL from a random DLL-hosting site. You can receive malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file with no trustworthy signature. Even a genuine-looking replacement may not fix the damaged application or missing dependency that caused the error.

What datime.dll is

Microsoft describes DATIME.DLL as hosting the legacy Microsoft Time COM component and lists two COM classes associated with it. The file’s internal description is TIME, and its product association is Microsoft Windows. You can review Microsoft’s description in the MS11-090 security bulletin.

This is not the modern Windows Time service. Current Windows time synchronization uses W32Time.dll, installed in %SystemRoot%System32, as described in Microsoft’s Windows Time Service documentation.

Public historical file indexes associate datime.dll with Windows XP and list 32-bit versions such as 6.3.1.146 and 6.3.1.148. Those version and size listings are historical catalog information, not proof that the same file should be copied into every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

Microsoft’s current component documentation does not establish that datime.dll is normally present on every current Windows release. If a Windows 10 or Windows 11 program requests it, the more useful question is usually: which old application requested it, and what installation component is missing?

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that reports the error

This is the safest first fix when one application produces the message and Windows otherwise works normally.

Repair the application

  1. Save your work and close the affected program.
  2. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  5. Find the affected program.
  6. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
  7. Choose Advanced options if it appears.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the program again.

If there is no Repair button, open the application’s original installer and look for Repair, Modify, or Maintenance.

A successful repair usually removes the startup error without requiring you to copy anything into System32 or SysWOW64. If the same message returns, uninstall the program and reinstall it from its original vendor media or a trusted installation source. Restart Windows after uninstalling before reinstalling.

If the program stores important data, back it up first. For an old game or business application, also check whether its saved files or configuration are stored separately from the installation folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why reinstalling the application matters

The message may name datime.dll even when the actual problem is:

  • An incomplete application installation.
  • A missing dependency loaded by the application.
  • A 32-bit application using an old COM component.
  • A damaged application registration.
  • A file removed from the application’s own directory.

Installing a random copy of datime.dll does not repair those conditions.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

A genuine system file can be quarantined after a false detection, but you should not restore it merely because an application requests it.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent entries involving datime.dll, the affected application, or a related installation file.
  7. Expand an entry to view its path and detection details.

Microsoft explains Protection History in its Windows Security guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • The path is an expected Windows or application installation directory.
  • The file’s publisher and digital signature can be verified.
  • You have checked the detection with your antivirus vendor.
  • A full security scan does not identify related malware.

If the file was deleted rather than quarantined, do not download a replacement from a DLL website. Continue with application repair or Windows repair instead.

Fix 3: Repair corrupted Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use this fix when multiple Windows features are malfunctioning, the file disappeared from an expected system location, or the problem began after disk damage, an interrupted update, or a failed Windows repair.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can provide the repair source. The official procedure is documented in Microsoft’s SFC repair guidance.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because the progress may pause for a while.

When successful, DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully or that corruption was repaired. Restart Windows before continuing.

Run System File Checker

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows.

A useful result is “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Test the affected program after restarting.

If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the Windows component store may be healthy and the problem is more likely limited to the old application. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still cannot repair the file, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair rather than downloading datime.dll.

Manually replacing a system DLL is not a safe first-line repair. A known-good file must match the Windows release, architecture, servicing state, and location.

Manually hunting through Windows versions and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows reported problems, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected program remains the definitive fix when that program owns the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Use Windows Update and the built-in repair reinstall

Before using recovery options, install pending updates.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Test the affected application again.

On Windows 11, some systems provide a repair reinstall that preserves applications, files, and settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts.

The option is not available on every Windows installation. Microsoft describes its requirements and behavior in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

If the option is absent, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair where supported. Back up important files first. Do not mix a DLL from Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows 10, or Windows 11 simply because the filename is identical.

Fix 5: Restore Windows to an earlier point

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other recent system change.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Next, then Finish.
  5. Allow Windows to restart.

You can also open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it normally does not remove personal documents. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

After Windows starts, test the original application. If the error remains, undoing the restore is possible only in certain circumstances, so record the restore point you selected.

Fix 6: Check optional Windows features only when the application requires one

datime.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX runtime, or .NET assembly. Do not install those packages merely because the filename ends in .dll.

An old program may separately require a Windows feature, however. Check its documentation or the complete error message first.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the features selected for the application, such as an older .NET Framework component.
  3. Enable a feature only when the application specifically requires it.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart Windows if requested.
  6. Test the program.

If enabling a feature changes nothing, disable it only if you enabled it for this troubleshooting attempt. Do not use Windows Features as a substitute for reinstalling a damaged legacy application.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the failure is also hardware-related

datime.dll is not a device driver. Device Manager is relevant only if the same incident includes a failed printer, display adapter, storage controller, or other hardware device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category for the affected device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider and driver date.
  8. Select Update Driver.
  9. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  10. Restart Windows and test the application.

If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, when available. For a printer or specialized device, use the manufacturer’s original driver package rather than a generic DLL.

Why regsvr32 usually is not the answer

regsvr32 registers certain DLLs that expose the required DllRegisterServer entry point. It does not download a missing file, repair corrupted binaries, restore dependencies, or fix every DLL error. Microsoft documents its limitations in Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

DATIME.DLL was a legacy COM component, so registration may have been part of its original installation. That does not make guessed commands such as these a safe general repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 datime.dll
regsvr32 /u datime.dll
regsvr32 /i datime.dll

Do not run them unless the original application installer or Microsoft documentation specifically requires that registration step and you have the correct file in the correct location. A registration error usually means the command is irrelevant, the architecture is wrong, or the DLL is not exposing the required entry point.

Check architecture, location, and signature

Historical listings identify datime.dll as a 32-bit file. That does not mean you should copy it into a particular folder manually.

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows uses the 32-bit system environment and dependencies. System32 and SysWOW64 have specific Windows meanings, so copying files into either directory based on an internet instruction can make the system less reliable.

To inspect a file that already exists:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab.
  4. Check the description, publisher, and version information.
  5. Open Digital Signatures, if present.
  6. Select the signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.

A file named datime.dll outside a trusted Windows or application installation directory is not automatically genuine. A matching filename is not proof of Microsoft origin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that datime.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing. In that case, copying another copy of datime.dll will not solve the underlying problem. Repair the application, inspect its installer requirements, and use Windows repair tools.

If malware or disk failure is possible

Run a full scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. If Windows Security reports broader compromise, disconnect the computer from sensitive networks and use Microsoft recovery options rather than trying to preserve questionable DLL files.

Also consider disk health if files repeatedly disappear, applications become corrupt, or SFC cannot complete. Back up personal data before attempting major repairs. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain reset and recovery paths.

FAQ

Is datime.dll legitimate?

Yes. datime.dll is a genuine Microsoft file associated with the legacy Microsoft Time COM component. A file with that name outside a trusted installation directory may still be counterfeit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is datime.dll the Windows Time service?

No. The modern Windows Time service uses W32Time.dll. datime.dll belongs to an older Microsoft Time component.

Is datime.dll normally part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Current Microsoft component documentation does not establish that it is normally present on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. On those systems, first identify the old program requesting it.

Should I download datime.dll separately?

No. There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download for this file. Use Windows repair, the original application installer, System Restore, or official Windows installation media.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not for datime.dll alone. Those packages are unrelated unless the application separately reports a missing runtime or feature that requires them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the message say a module is missing when the file exists?

A dependency of datime.dll or the application may be missing. The named DLL is not always the true absent component.

What if SFC cannot repair datime.dll?

Restart, run DISM before SFC, and repeat the check once. If repair still fails, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair. Do not replace the file with an arbitrary download.

What is the definitive fix for one old application?

Repair or reinstall that application from its original, trusted installer or media. If the program is obsolete, compatibility problems may remain even after the DLL error is resolved.
