Dbrand’s Nintendo Switch 2 “Leak” Was Surprisingly Accurate—Here’s What the Final Design Confirmed

Dbrand’s Killswitch images were not Nintendo’s official reveal, but the final Switch 2 confirmed their biggest visual claims: a larger console, larger Joy-Con 2 and magnetic attachment.

Yes—dbrand’s December 2024 Killswitch images were an unusually accurate early look at the Nintendo Switch 2’s exterior. They were still an unofficial third-party reveal, not a Nintendo announcement. After Nintendo released Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, the leak’s broadest claims—larger hardware, larger controllers, a rear stand and a new attachment system—could be checked against the retail console.

What dbrand actually revealed

On December 13, 2024, dbrand promoted its Killswitch protective case for the then-unannounced Nintendo console. A smoky, translucent case partially covered the hardware inside, and dbrand told gaming media that the device represented the actual Switch 2 design. The product being sold or previewed was dbrand’s case; Nintendo did not announce the console through dbrand.

The distinction matters. Dbrand’s statement was a claim from an accessory maker, while Nintendo’s presentation and support documentation remain authoritative for the final product. The contemporaneous report is available from Android Headlines.

What the promotional images appeared to show

  • A handheld body that looked larger and more substantial than the original Switch.
  • Larger Joy-Con-style controllers, shown in a red-and-blue color combination.
  • A visible “+” button on the right controller.
  • An apparent area for Amiibo or other NFC functions.
  • A rear kickstand visible through or beneath the case.
  • A smoky cover that hid enough of the console to prevent a complete inspection.

These are visual observations, not a specification sheet. The pictures could suggest shape and component placement, but they could not establish display resolution, battery capacity, processor performance, storage, final dimensions, weight or every retail color. They also did not establish whether dbrand had Nintendo’s permission or a licensing agreement.

  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch

  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Why the leak looked credible at the time

Before dbrand’s post, accessory-related renders and alleged CAD-based images had circulated. September 2024 coverage described those materials as unverified, but their general shape appeared to converge with what dbrand showed. That convergence made the case reveal stronger evidence than an anonymous forum post, without making it official. Nintendo Life’s report documents the earlier uncertainty.

A useful evidence hierarchy is:

  1. Nintendo’s final hardware and documentation: conclusive for the retail design.
  2. Dbrand’s images and statement: strong third-party evidence, but still an attributed claim.
  3. Accessory mockups and CAD-derived renders: useful when multiple sources converge, yet unconfirmed.
  4. Anonymous posts and social images: context only.

Dbrand imagery versus the retail Switch 2

Feature Dbrand imagery Final Nintendo Switch 2
Overall body Appeared larger than the original Switch Nintendo confirms that Switch 2 is physically larger
Joy-Con size Controllers appeared larger Nintendo confirms Joy-Con 2 is larger
Attachment system Images and accompanying coverage suggested a redesigned attachment Joy-Con 2 attaches magnetically rather than sliding on the original rails
Rear support A kickstand was visible beneath the case The retail console has a rear stand
Right-side controls A “+” button was visible The final controller has the expected Nintendo control layout
Controller colors Red-and-blue controllers appeared in the pictured unit That image does not prove every retail color configuration
Ports and sensors Only partly visible through the smoky cover Nintendo’s diagram is authoritative for the complete layout

Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 differences page confirms the larger console and Joy-Con 2, magnetic attachment and the change to microSD Express storage. The official console diagram shows the rear magnetic connector area, microSD Express slot and stand, plus USB-C ports on the top and bottom. It also identifies the top-mounted brightness sensor, air vent, audio jack, microphone and game-card slot.

What the December 2024 images did not prove

  • Exact screen size, resolution, display technology, dimensions or weight.
  • Battery capacity, processor, graphics performance, storage capacity or battery life.
  • Final port, sensor or button specifications hidden by the case.
  • That the pictured red-and-blue controllers were the only retail option.
  • Release date, price or availability of the Killswitch case.
  • Nintendo authorization, licensing or approval for dbrand’s reveal.

Nintendo says accessories bearing its Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal have gone through its licensing process; a third-party product should not be described as licensed without that indication. See Nintendo’s licensed and unlicensed product guidance.

What the new design means for old accessories

The larger body and magnetic Joy-Con 2 system make automatic compatibility assumptions unsafe. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says the original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2, and original Joy-Con cannot attach directly to the new console. Original Joy-Con can still pair wirelessly in supported situations. Ordinary microSD cards used by the original Switch are not the intended expansion format for Switch 2; Nintendo specifies microSD Express.

Should you consider the dbrand Killswitch?

The Killswitch is the exact accessory associated with the early reveal. Its current vendor listing is dbrand’s Nintendo Switch 2 Killswitch page. Availability and pricing are market- and date-sensitive, so check that page rather than relying on the 2024 report, which predated a release date.

Before buying any Switch 2 case, verify:

  • It is designed for Switch 2, not the original or OLED model.
  • Both USB-C ports, the game-card slot, vents, microphone and stand remain usable.
  • Joy-Con 2 can be detached as intended.
  • The case fits your dock, or can be removed without difficulty.
  • A screen protector is correctly sized for the larger display if included.
  • Replacement parts, warranty and returns are clearly stated.
  • The product’s Nintendo licensing status is explicit rather than implied.

A rugged shell may suit travel and drop protection; a slim case may preserve portability and docking convenience; an official Nintendo case reduces compatibility uncertainty. None should be called “best” without hands-on testing.

The verdict

Dbrand did not officially unveil the Nintendo Switch 2, but it appears to have shown the final console’s broad exterior months early. The larger body, larger Joy-Con, magnetic attachment and rear stand all survived comparison with Nintendo’s retail hardware. The accurate description is therefore an unofficial early look at the Switch 2’s exterior—not Nintendo’s official design reveal and not proof of every hidden specification or cosmetic detail.
