D&D Beyond’s October 2026 Drop, Shadowfell Secrets, adds four monsters, four maps, refreshed encounter material, and new player options—including the Sorrow Knight, the first subclass to appear in a Drop. Despite its spooky-season timing, D&D Beyond describes the release as steeped in the Shadowfell’s melancholy rather than straightforward horror. The Drop was announced October 1, 2026. What is the tone of Shadowfell Secrets?
The Shadowfell is presented here as a bleak reflection of the Material Plane, and the release reaches beyond the Domains of Dread. Jay Jani, author of the official announcement, writes: “This month’s monsters and maps (and even the character options) aren’t quite horror-themed; they’re instead infused with the Shadowfell’s pervasive melancholy.” So expect eerie, somber material, but don’t read “horror” as a promise that every option is built around conventional horror themes.

Four maps
The map set, credited to cartographer Jason A. Engle, includes cavern corridors around a ritual pit, a burial chamber with magic circles, a nighttime forest clearing, and ruins of a keep in the Shadowfell.

Five refreshed encounters
Five earlier Drop-in Encounters have been updated as Storied Encounters with new Scene Prep text. The listed level versions are:
- Urban Vampire Cadre: levels 4 and 10
- Corrupted Grove: levels 5 and 19
- Demonic Cult Summoning: levels 6 and 17
- Ooze There: levels 6 and 11
- Slippery Slope: levels 2 and 7
D&D Beyond says it plans to give more encounters from its backlog this treatment periodically.

What can players use?
Sorrow Knight Fighter subclass
The Sorrow Knight is the first subclass in a D&D Beyond Drop. Its Fighters draw on past despair and use special Despairing Strike Dice to make attacks called Despairing Strikes. At level 3, the subclass feature lets a character sense a creature’s prevalent emotions; at level 18, a character attunes to the Shadowfell after using Action Surge. Those are headline details, not a substitute for the full rules entry when deciding how the subclass works at the table.
Three feats
- Shadow Pact: forms a pact with a Shadowfell entity.
- Shadow Trapper: inflicts Shadowfell melancholy on trapped foes.
- Shadow Weaver: creates, controls, and manipulates shadows.
Tarokka Life Path and character-sheet backdrops
The Tarokka Life Path is a backstory-focused spread using D&D Beyond’s digital Tarokka Deck. The Drop includes this spread only; other spreads are supported by a separate digital deck available through the D&D Beyond Marketplace. The announcement also says four Shadowfell-themed character-sheet backdrops are expected to roll out the following week, rather than stating they were already available on announcement day.

How do you access the October Drop?
D&D Beyond describes Drops as monthly additions to a growing library of adventures, player options, and Dungeon Master tools for subscribers. According to the announcement, a Drop remains in a subscriber’s library while the subscription is active. It also mentions a 30-day free subscription trial, but trial terms and eligibility can change; check D&D Beyond’s current subscription information before signing up. The announcement does not establish current pricing or which subscription tier includes each item.
