May 2024 leak reports described Valve’s Deadlock as a six-versus-six, third-person hero shooter built around four lanes, defensive objectives and floating-rail traversal. Those details came from leaked material and reporting, not a final Valve specification. Valve later said the game was invite-only and in early development, with temporary art and experimental gameplay; updates through 2026 show it continued to change.

What the May 2024 Deadlock leaks reportedly showed

Ars Technica reported on May 17, 2024, that screenshots and details attributed to Valve-focused creator Gabe Follower pointed to a competitive third-person hero-based shooter. The reported format was six players on each team, fighting across a map with four lanes and tower-defense elements. The setting was described as a modern, steampunk-inspired European city with fantasy elements. Ars Technica’s leak report framed these as details from the material then circulating, not as a Valve design announcement.

Floating rails and fast movement

Fast travel on floating rails was one of the leak’s distinctive reported mechanics. GameSpot’s May 22 coverage said leaked videos showed rideable aerial lines reminiscent of BioShock Infinite’s skyhook system. It also described footage of a training mode and several characters. Taken together, the reports suggested a shooter in which players could move quickly between lane-based fights, but they do not establish how that movement works in the game’s later versions.

Characters reportedly visible in footage

GameSpot named Ivy, Infernus, Haze, Lady Geist and Vindicta among the characters reported or visible in the leaked footage. Its account, like the other May coverage, should be read as a snapshot of in-progress material. It does not establish that these characters, their names or their designs remained unchanged. GameSpot’s May 22 report described the visual mix as steampunk and fantasy and noted the training mode.

Valve clarified the project’s status in August 2024

Valve later opened the door to public discussion, streaming and community sites, but that did not mean Deadlock was finished or publicly available to everyone. On August 23, 2024, PC Gamer reproduced a notice from Valve developer account representative Yoshi: “We are remaining invite-only and continue to be in an early development stage with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay.” PC Gamer’s report on Valve’s notice said the rules against public discussion had been lifted while access remained invite-only. Valve said nothing else about the state of development was changing at that point.

That distinction matters when interpreting the leaked screenshots: they showed an early build, not a stable feature list or final visual direction. The August statement is a status update from that date; it does not by itself establish today’s access rules.

How Deadlock changed after the leak

Dated updates make clear why the May footage should not be treated as a current specification. In October 2024, update notes introduced Hero Labs, an experimental matchmaking mode featuring six in-progress heroes, alongside other changes. The information appears in an update summary from an unofficial Deadlock reference site, which identifies itself as unaffiliated with Valve. The October 24, 2024 update summary records that dated change.

PC Gamer reported on January 23, 2026, that Valve’s Old Gods, New Blood update overhauled patrons, bases and troopers, added a short 4v4 Street Brawl mode with best-of-five matches, and planned to add six heroes over the following weeks. These are later reported changes, not details from the original leak. PC Gamer’s January 2026 coverage describes that update.

What the latest cited update report establishes

On August 29, 2026, PC Gamer reported that a large update was running late because playtesting and iteration took longer than expected. Yoshi said, “The delay is mainly due to the regular process of playtesting and iteration sometimes taking longer than expected, rather than a change in the scope of the update itself.” The article reported late September 2026 as the expected timing and said players would receive notice when the update was a few days away. That was a forecast, not confirmation of release: the cited report does not establish whether the update had shipped by September 30, 2026. PC Gamer’s August 29, 2026 report contains the timing and statement.

What to take away from the leak

  • The May 2024 reports described a third-person hero shooter with six-versus-six matches, four lanes, defensive objectives and floating-rail travel. These were leak-era claims, not a final official specification.
  • Leaked footage reportedly included a training mode and characters, but the available reporting does not prove those early details remained unchanged.
  • Valve’s August 2024 statement made the development status explicit: invite-only, early development, temporary art and experimental gameplay.
  • Later updates documented substantial evolution, so the 2024 screenshots are useful historical evidence of an early build—not a reliable guide to the current design.
