Death Howl Review: A Grief-Stricken Open-World Deckbuilder With a Soulslike Edge

Death Howl turns deckbuilding into a tactical, turn-based grid campaign shaped by enemy-pattern learning, risky resource recovery, and Ro’s search for her son.

Death Howl is a single-player, open-world deckbuilding campaign where every fight asks you to balance card play with movement on a turn-based grid. Its strongest idea is also its sharpest hurdle: enemies must be studied and decks adapted, while defeat costs resources and checkpoints bring foes back. The result is a distinctive, atmospheric journey that can be rewarding once its rules click—and frustrating while they do not.

What is Death Howl?

Developed by The Outer Zone and published by 11 bit studios, Death Howl is a persistent open-world campaign, not a conventional roguelite built around restarting a series of runs. Ro explores a spirit realm, gathers materials, and crafts cards that serve as her weapons and abilities. Steam lists the PC release date as December 9, 2025, and supports Steam Deck; PC Gamer also reports Steam Deck Verified status. Steam store listing · PC Gamer review

The emotional premise gives the world its purpose. Ro is grieving the death of her son, Olvi, and enters the spirit realm in an attempt to bring him back. The official framing centers on grief, healing, resilience, memory, and acceptance. Game director Malte Burup describes the setting as a realm shaped by grief, distant memories, and the unknown. Its dark, woodcut-inspired pixel imagery reinforces that feeling rather than treating the journey as a light fantasy adventure. PlayStation Blog: how Death Howl was built · Tesura Games product page

How combat and deckbuilding work

Fights unfold on a turn-based grid. Ro has a limited pool of action points, and both moving between tiles and playing cards draw from it. That makes positioning a direct cost: spending points to get out of danger may mean giving up an attack, while committing to offense can leave Ro exposed. Combat is therefore not just about having a powerful hand; it is about deciding where to stand and how much of the turn to spend getting there.

Enemy behaviors are patterns to learn, not simply damage to absorb. The developers have cited foes that pull Ro, poison her, shield themselves, counter attacks, or close distance quickly. Recognizing what an enemy is likely to do shapes which cards are useful and whether to advance, defend, or retreat. The Outer Zone and 11 bit studios’ Steam announcement

Between encounters, Ro explores and collects materials. Cards are crafted using those materials and Death Howls earned from defeated enemies; totems and upgrades add further ways to shape a build. The official materials describe four realms and thirteen regions, with cards and builds influenced by where they are found. The Steam listing describes more than 160 craftable cards. A December 5, 2025 announcement also cites more than 30 enemy types and identifies Sacred Groves as places to heal, save, and upgrade. Steam store listing · December 5, 2025 announcement

Why Death Howl feels like a soulslike

The comparison is about the campaign’s learning and recovery loop, not a claim that it follows every convention of an action Souls game. Sacred Groves restore health, but resting there also respawns enemies. If Ro dies, she returns to just before the failed encounter and drops her Death Howls; she can retrieve them after respawning. Because Death Howls are used for card crafting and ability upgrades, a failed fight can put valuable resources at risk.

That structure gives each attempt consequences while leaving room to respond: players can study enemy patterns, change their decks between attempts, and try a different approach. Burup says the “soulslike” label was not part of the original design document, but emerged after testers connected with the pattern-learning and death-and-adaptation loop. He describes the game as “still an open world deckbuilder” to him, while accepting that others see “a soulslike card battler.” PlayStation Blog

Difficulty: deliberate, but not always clear

The developers intended players to learn enemy behaviors through play and wanted defeats to prompt deck changes. They have also acknowledged that some players struggled with attack patterns and with the amount of information the game provides. Those goals can pull in opposite directions: an enemy may become satisfying to solve after close observation, but a first encounter can feel opaque if its warning or behavior is hard to read.

PC Gamer’s Abbie Stone reviewed the game on an Asus ROG Ally and recommended it as an effective mix of deckbuilder and soulslike, while describing early difficulty and unclear attacks as frustrating. The review also notes that regional cards can become more expensive to use outside their home region. That is one critic’s experience, not a guarantee that every player will have the same response. • A TWISTED GAME: This is an adult game that is not afraid of taking it too far. Don't play I Choose Death if you're afraid to contemplate some truly horrible realities. The ideal party game, we suggest playing with those 18 and over.
  • GREAT FOR PARTIES AND GIFTS: The perfect would-you-rather adult card game for birthdays, parties, holidays, Halloween, White Elephant, Secret Santa, and as a unique gift! The glow-in-the-dark tombstone box and included glow-in-the-dark sticker add a unique aspect to this gift.

For players, the practical implication is that a deck that worked in one area may not be the right answer to the next enemy or region. If a fight repeatedly goes badly, the game’s intended response is to identify the behavior causing trouble and rebuild or adjust the deck—not simply to repeat the same turn sequence and hope for better luck. The friction is real, though: learning works best when the player can distinguish a deliberate puzzle from an attack that was not clearly communicated.

Verdict

Death Howl makes deckbuilding spatial and consequential: movement competes with card play, enemy patterns demand attention, and death turns resource recovery into part of the campaign. Its grief-centered story and stark art give that demanding loop a strong emotional setting. It is a good fit for players who enjoy persistent exploration and learning difficult encounters through adaptation. Those who need clear attack telegraphs or dislike punishing trial and error may find its early fights more opaque than compelling.
