Integrated graphics are the better choice for affordability, battery life and light gaming; dedicated graphics are the better choice for demanding games, high refresh rates, high resolutions and GPU-heavy creative work. Modern integrated GPUs can handle esports, indie games, older titles and some newer games at reduced settings, but they remain far behind a suitable discrete GPU for consistent 1080p high-refresh, 1440p, 4K, ray tracing, VR and sustained rendering.

The right answer depends on the exact processor or graphics card, memory configuration, laptop power limit, target monitor and games—not merely whether a specification says “integrated” or “dedicated.”

Integrated vs. dedicated graphics at a glance

Factor Integrated GPU (iGPU) Dedicated GPU (dGPU)
Location Built into the processor or platform Separate desktop card or laptop graphics chip
Memory Uses system RAM; bandwidth is shared with the CPU and applications Normally has dedicated VRAM
Cost Included with the processor or computer Adds a separate component cost or a more expensive laptop configuration
Power and heat Usually lower Usually higher under graphics load
Gaming Light games and selected modern titles with compromises High settings, high refresh, 1440p/4K and ray tracing, depending on model
Battery life Usually better in comparable laptops Often shorter while active; hybrid systems can switch it off
Upgradeability Tied to the processor and platform Desktop cards are replaceable; laptop GPUs usually are not

Intel describes integrated graphics as a space, cost and energy-efficiency solution, while discrete graphics target higher-performance workloads (Intel). Microsoft similarly recommends discrete GeForce RTX, Radeon RX or Intel Arc graphics for intense gaming (Microsoft).

What integrated graphics actually share

An iGPU is part of the processor or system package and normally draws from system memory rather than having a private VRAM pool. The operating system may reserve some RAM, but a listing such as “12 GB shared graphics memory” does not mean the GPU has 12 GB of high-speed dedicated VRAM.

Memory configuration can make or break performance

  • Dual-channel DDR5 or fast LPDDR5X generally gives an iGPU more bandwidth than a single memory module.
  • The GPU competes with Windows, the CPU and applications for the same capacity.
  • Sixteen gigabytes can work for basic use, but 32 GB gives a shared-memory gaming system more headroom.
  • Slow memory, single-channel operation, restrictive firmware settings or inadequate cooling can make review results unrepresentative.

“Integrated graphics” covers very different products: basic Intel UHD-class solutions, AMD Radeon 780M and 890M-class designs, and Intel Arc-based laptop graphics should not be treated as one performance tier.

What a dedicated GPU adds

A dGPU has a separate graphics processor, its own memory and a separate power-and-cooling budget. That allows substantially more sustained graphics throughput and memory bandwidth. A desktop card can normally be replaced later; an iGPU is effectively fixed to its processor, while most laptop dGPUs are soldered.

Dedicated hardware also provides more headroom for ray tracing, AI upscaling, frame generation, professional effects, 3D rendering and multi-monitor workloads. More VRAM helps with high-resolution textures, ray tracing, mods and large projects, but VRAM capacity cannot compensate for weak compute performance.

Performance by workload

Workload Integrated graphics Dedicated graphics
Web, office and video playback More than sufficient Usually unnecessary
Older games, indie games and cloud gaming Usually sufficient Higher settings and frame rates
1080p esports Often viable on a strong modern iGPU Better for 120–240 Hz targets
Modern AAA games Usually low settings, reduced resolution or upscaling Better image quality and frame-time consistency
1440p Limited to selected games with compromises Mainstream dGPU territory
4K Generally unsuitable for native high-quality play Requires a midrange or high-end dGPU
Ray tracing and VR Often technically supported but usually impractical Normally the practical choice
Video editing Good for basic timelines and media encode/decode Better for effects, high-resolution footage and faster exports
3D rendering and many AI workloads Limited or application-dependent Usually much stronger, subject to software support

Gaming expectations by resolution

720p and 900p

This is where a strong iGPU can be genuinely useful. Lower render resolution and reduced settings can produce playable results in esports, older games and selected modern releases.

1080p

Strong iGPUs can deliver playable 1080p at low or medium settings, commonly targeting 30–60 FPS. Tom’s Hardware found the Ryzen 7 8700G’s Radeon 780M to offer solid 720p and passable 1080p gaming, while noting the limited title selection and lower visual quality (review). A mainstream dGPU is the safer choice for high settings, high-refresh monitors and more consistent 1% lows.

1440p

1440p quickly exposes an iGPU’s bandwidth and compute limits. A dedicated GPU is normally required for high settings or high refresh rates. Match the card to the monitor: a 60 Hz 1080p display may show little visible benefit from an expensive upgrade, while a 1440p/144 Hz display needs substantially more performance.

4K

Native, high-quality 4K gaming is a dedicated-GPU workload. Current hierarchy results illustrate the tiers: Tom’s Hardware measured the RTX 5060 at 13.4 FPS at 4K Ultra, RX 9060 XT 16GB at 24.5 FPS, RX 9070 at 41.1 FPS, RX 9070 XT at 47.4 FPS and RTX 5070 Ti at 52.8 FPS in its test suite (methodology and hierarchy). These are market context, not an iGPU-versus-dGPU benchmark; tests use specific games, drivers, presets and systems.

Ray tracing, upscaling and frame generation

Modern iGPUs may support ray tracing in hardware, but support does not guarantee playable frame rates. Dedicated GPUs generally have more ray-tracing headroom. DLSS, FSR and XeSS can reconstruct an image from a lower internal resolution, while frame generation can improve perceived smoothness. Both depend on game support, can introduce artifacts or latency, and work best when the underlying rendered frame rate is already reasonable. Tom’s Hardware identifies DLSS 4.5 and Multi Frame Generation as current RTX 50-series advantages in supported games, while noting more limited AMD frame-generation coverage (GPU hierarchy).

What does each option cost?

Integrated systems

The graphics hardware is included, but a capable iGPU may require a stronger APU, fast dual-channel memory, more RAM and a suitable motherboard. The Ryzen 7 8700G launched at $329 and Ryzen 5 8600G at $229; Tom’s Hardware noted that DDR5 and motherboard costs complicate comparisons with a CPU-plus-dGPU build (8700G review).

  • Check the advertised GPU wattage and independent tests for the exact model.
  • Look for a MUX switch or Advanced Optimus-style routing when maximum gaming performance matters.
  • Consider display resolution and refresh rate, battery capacity, charger size, weight and fan noise.
  • Most laptop dGPUs and all iGPUs are not user-upgradeable.

Hybrid graphics let the iGPU handle the desktop and video playback while the dGPU wakes for games. External-display wiring, BIOS settings and operating-system graphics preferences can determine which processor is active. A dGPU can therefore improve gaming without running continuously, although active gaming still raises heat, noise and power use.

Desktop-specific differences

An iGPU is useful in an inexpensive office PC, a compact build or as a troubleshooting display output if a discrete card fails. Intel states that built-in graphics do not reduce dedicated-GPU performance when the dGPU is rendering (Intel support).

Choose a desktop dGPU when gaming is central, GPU-accelerated work is regular, multiple high-resolution displays are required or independent future upgrades matter. Before buying, verify PCIe power connectors, PSU capacity, case clearance and airflow.

Which should you buy?

Choose integrated graphics when

  • The PC is mainly for school, office work, browsing and streaming.
  • You play esports, indie, older or undemanding games.
  • 30–60 FPS at reduced settings is acceptable.
  • Low weight, long battery life, quiet operation and low cost matter most.
  • VR, serious 3D rendering and advanced ray tracing are not requirements.

Choose a dedicated GPU when

  • You want modern AAA games at high settings.
  • You target 1080p high refresh, 1440p or 4K.
  • You need ray tracing, VR, large texture packs or extensive mods.
  • You edit high-resolution video, render 3D scenes or run GPU-accelerated AI software.
  • You are building a desktop with a future graphics-card upgrade path.

Choose a strong iGPU as a compromise when

You want a small, efficient system, mainly play lighter games, can tune settings and value lower purchase and operating costs over maximum visual quality. Configure fast memory and adequate capacity, and check benchmarks for the exact machine.

Quick Recap

Common buying mistakes

  • Comparing model names alone: an old or low-power dGPU can lose to a modern high-end iGPU, while laptop and desktop versions with the same name may differ greatly.
  • Ignoring memory: single-channel or slow RAM can severely restrict an iGPU.
  • Treating shared memory as VRAM: a maximum addressable pool is not dedicated high-bandwidth graphics memory.
  • Buying for 4K with a 1080p-class card: resolution, ray tracing and texture settings require a different performance tier.
  • Assuming feature support means usability: an iGPU may technically support ray tracing but deliver impractical frame rates.
  • Using minimum requirements as a target: check recommended requirements and tested performance for the games you actually play.
  • Ignoring the monitor: pair the GPU with the intended resolution and refresh rate.
  • Reading FPS without conditions: resolution, preset, upscaling, frame generation, drivers, memory and power limits all affect results.

Practical starting points

Use case Starting recommendation
Office or school Integrated graphics; 16 GB RAM is a practical baseline and 32 GB helps heavier multitasking
Casual 1080p gaming Strong modern iGPU, preferably with 32 GB shared system memory; verify game-specific results
Mainstream 1080p Entry or lower-midrange dGPU such as the RTX 5060 or RX 9060 XT class in 2026 comparisons
1440p Midrange dGPU with sufficient VRAM for the games, settings and refresh rate
4K or heavy ray tracing High-end dGPU, strong cooling and PSU; upscaling is likely in demanding games
