DEKAVITA7

DEKAVITA7 Turned the PS Vita TV Into a Giant Portable—but Did It Sell Out in Japan?

GameTech’s DEKAVITA7 was a real Japanese accessory that wrapped a PS Vita TV in a 7-inch screen and controller, letting the otherwise TV-bound device run on battery power. But the evidence supports a more cautious answer to the headline’s “sells out” claim: the product was announced, later appeared in retail listings, and became hard to find, while a nationwide sellout or total production figure is not established.

What the DEKAVITA7 actually was

The DEKAVITA7 was a monitor-integrated controller shell made by GameTech, not a Sony console or a giant version of the PS Vita. It was designed to accept Sony’s compact PS Vita TV module—the device marketed as PlayStation TV in Western markets—and supply the screen and controls that the module lacked.

The Vita TV sat at the rear of the DEKAVITA7. Built-in HDMI and power connections linked it to the display, while USB handled controller output in supported configurations. In effect, GameTech turned a small set-top console into a bulky, self-contained gaming unit without changing the Vita TV’s internal hardware. Engadget’s contemporary overview described the arrangement and noted the lack of a touchscreen.

Launch-era specifications

These are reported specifications from contemporary coverage and a later retailer listing, not results from independent testing. The battery estimate in particular was reported rather than verified by a published runtime test.

The display resolution and viewing-angle figures were reported by ALI213; a later specialist-retailer listing gives dimensions, panel details, connections and the September date. A secondary overview reported the five-hour battery estimate and use with other HDMI hardware, including PS3 setups: Gameranx. That report does not establish universal compatibility with every PS3 game or setup.

Portable, but not a portable PS Vita

The integrated screen, controls and internal battery meant the DEKAVITA7 did not need a household television to operate. That made it portable in a practical sense, but the Vita TV module remained essential. The result was closer to a portable console dock—or an oversized gamepad with a built-in display—than to a conventional handheld. Engadget compared its broad form factor to a smaller Wii U GamePad, while pointing out that it had no touchscreen.

The large display was one of its attractions: at 7 inches, it was bigger than the original PS Vita’s 5-inch screen. Contemporary coverage also floated video viewing through Sony’s nasne network recorder as a possible use. Neither feature changed what games the Vita TV could run.

The compatibility catch

DEKAVITA7 inherited the PS Vita TV’s compatibility limits. It did not make every PS Vita game playable, and it did not add the Vita’s front touchscreen or rear touch panel. Titles that required those controls could be unsupported or awkward to use. The device therefore offered a larger-screen way to use the Vita TV-compatible portion of the library, not full Vita compatibility in a bigger shell. Contemporary Japanese coverage discussed the product’s relationship to Vita TV and the touch-control limitation.

Why anyone might have wanted one—and why critics called it redundant

The strongest case was for an existing Vita TV owner who wanted a dedicated screen-and-controller setup away from a television, or a collector drawn to an unusually ambitious Japanese peripheral. A larger display could also suit video use. The accessory was not an obvious alternative to buying a standard Vita: it required the separate Vita TV, was physically much larger, and retained the platform’s game restrictions.

That trade-off drove the contemporary “why not just buy a Vita?” reaction. At preorder, the DEKAVITA7 was offered for ¥19,800 before tax, with a regular price of ¥23,000 before tax expected. A standard Vita was reported as being around the same price level at the time, though any direct comparison depends on model, condition, date and market. Crunchyroll’s contemporary coverage captured the redundancy criticism; Gameranx also discussed the comparison.

Preorders, planned launch and the later retail date

In November 2014, coverage reported a preorder window running from November 11 to November 30, a ¥19,800-before-tax preorder price, and an expected regular price of ¥23,000 before tax. The initial target was spring 2015. The later Nin-Nin Game listing gives September 17, 2015 as the release date, so the schedule reported at announcement and the date shown by a retailer do not match. The available information does not establish why; it is safest to treat spring as the original plan and September 17 as the retailer-listed date rather than infer a cause.

The November preorder report also said production could depend on receiving enough orders. That is not evidence, by itself, that the campaign met its threshold or that all stock sold out. The contemporary report documents the preorder terms and initial schedule; the later retailer entry supplies the later date.

What “sells out in Japan” can—and cannot—mean

“Sold out” can describe several different events: a preorder allocation disappearing, a particular retailer running out, a production run being exhausted, or all Japanese inventory being gone nationwide. Those are not interchangeable claims. The sources available here establish a preorder campaign and later commercial listings, but do not establish a verified nationwide sellout, a quantity sold, or an official GameTech statement that all Japanese stock was exhausted.

A later listing marked out of stock shows only that the particular retailer listing had no stock at that point. It cannot prove that the original Japanese launch sold out. Likewise, later difficulty finding an unusual accessory is consistent with scarcity, but does not reveal how many were made or how strong launch demand was. The most defensible description is that the DEKAVITA7 was real and is now difficult to source; the nationwide-sellout wording remains unverified.

Buying one today: check the whole setup, not just the shell

For collectors, the DEKAVITA7’s appeal is its unusual design. For practical gaming, it is a compromised way to use a platform with built-in compatibility limits. Used listings may also involve aged batteries and incomplete bundles, so confirm exactly what is included and what works before buying.

  • Confirm the Vita TV is included. The DEKAVITA7 does not function as a Vita by itself; some listings may be for the shell alone.
  • Check the battery. An old internal battery may be degraded or need repair, which undermines portable use.
  • Inspect the screen and controls. Ask about display damage, button response and charging behavior.
  • Verify cables and connections. Confirm the HDMI, power and controller connections needed for the specific configuration are present.
  • Check each game’s Vita TV compatibility. A title working on a standard Vita does not guarantee it will work on Vita TV; regional software differences may also matter.
  • Read stock and bundle language literally. A retailer’s “out of stock” status applies to that listing, not necessarily the whole market.

The specialist retailer listing explicitly says a PS Vita TV is required and describes a used listing as out of stock. Its condition and bundle details are therefore more useful to a buyer than treating its status as a record of launch demand.

Which alternative fits better?

Option Best fit Main trade-off
Standard PS Vita Players who want a genuine handheld and broader Vita functionality Smaller screen than the DEKAVITA7
Vita TV plus portable HDMI monitor Owners seeking a flexible screen setup Requires separate display, controller, power and mounting arrangements
DIY portable Vita TV setup Enthusiasts willing to assemble a custom rig Requires additional hardware and cable, power and mounting work
Modern handheld or remote-play device Everyday current gaming Not a direct substitute for Vita TV software compatibility

Why the DEKAVITA7 remains memorable

The DEKAVITA7 took the Vita TV’s central compromise—small console, no screen—and solved it with a large battery-powered enclosure. That was inventive, but it did not erase the reasons the product was niche: owners needed the separate Vita TV, the unit was far less compact than a normal handheld, and the software limits remained. Its oddity helps explain its collector appeal; it does not prove a nationwide sellout or make it a better Vita.
