Apple approved it for the App Store on April 17, 2024, after changing its review rules to allow certain retro-console and PC emulator apps. Availability has depended on region: the initial App Store release targeted users outside the European Union, while AltStore PAL handled distribution for EU users at launch. Before installing, check the current storefront and use only game files you are legally entitled to possess and use.
What happened when Delta reached the App Store?
Riley Testut’s Delta had long been distributed through AltStore rather than Apple’s store. On April 17, 2024, it became available through the official App Store after Apple revised its policies to permit qualifying retro game-console and PC emulators. The announcement followed Apple’s removal of iGBA, an app Testut criticized as a clone of his earlier GBA4iOS project. The App Store release also coincided with the launch of AltStore PAL in Europe.
This is a historical event, not a new 2026 launch. Delta remains an important example of how Apple’s emulator policy changed, but the live listing, supported operating systems and regional availability can change.
Apple’s current App Review Guidelines section 4.7 allows retro-console and PC emulator apps under Apple’s privacy, safety, content, legal and payment requirements. That permission does not authorize copyrighted game distribution, and Apple can still reject software that violates its rules or applicable law.

What Delta is—and who made it
Delta is the successor to GBA4iOS, an earlier Game Boy Advance emulator created by Riley Testut with Paul Thorsen. The project is open source on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license and was designed to run on non-jailbroken Apple devices.
Delta supplies emulator software and interface features. It does not include commercial Nintendo games. Nintendo, Apple and AltStore are not affiliated with Delta.
Systems Delta supports
The systems below come from the project’s current documentation, not all from the original April 2024 launch announcement:
| System | Documentation status |
|---|---|
| Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) | Listed as supported |
| Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) | Listed as supported |
| Nintendo 64 | Listed as supported |
| Game Boy and Game Boy Color | Listed as supported |
| Game Boy Advance | Listed as supported |
| Nintendo DS | Listed as supported |
| Sega Genesis/Mega Drive | Listed as beta in the project documentation |
Delta is not a general-purpose emulator for GameCube, Wii, PlayStation 2 or Nintendo Switch. Compatibility can also vary by game, device and iOS or iPadOS release, so a system appearing in the list is not a guarantee that every title will run perfectly.

Features that make Delta useful
- Save states and backup save states: capture emulator-level snapshots in addition to a game’s own save system.
- Fast-forwarding: speed through slow sections when a game and device support it.
- Custom controls: change button mappings and use alternate controller skins.
- Artwork management: add game artwork and use automatic box-art handling.
- Cheat support: enter cheats where the relevant system and game support them.
- Delta Sync: synchronize games, saves, save states, cheats, controller skins and mappings through supported Google Drive or Dropbox accounts, as documented by the project.
- Special hardware features: Nintendo DS microphone input, gyroscope support for WarioWare: Twisted!, hold-button functions and haptic or 3D Touch features are documented capabilities.
- Local multiplayer: launch reporting described support for up to four players.
Save states are convenient snapshots, not interchangeable replacements for in-game saves. Keep more than one state and test restored saves before relying on them. Synchronization is not a substitute for an independent backup.
Controller support
Supported controllers listed in the project documentation include PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 pads, Xbox One S and Xbox Series X controllers, MFi controllers, Bluetooth keyboards, wired keyboards and Apple Smart Keyboard. Launch reporting also described Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, Nintendo Switch Online controllers and Joy-Cons.
Actual behavior depends on the iOS version, connection method, controller firmware and individual model. A controller is optional: touch controls work, but a physical pad usually improves comfort and precision for games with demanding timing. Check device fit, case clearance, latency, button mapping and whether a phone-oriented controller also supports an iPad before buying.
How to install Delta
App Store installation
- Open the App Store for your region.
- Search for Delta – Game Emulator.
- Verify the developer identity and official listing before downloading; do not install similarly named clones.
- Install Delta.
- Use the iOS Files interface or another supported transfer method to import a game file you are legally entitled to use.
- Pair a controller if desired, then configure controls, artwork, saves or synchronization.
- Open the imported game.
Launch coverage reported Delta as free to download and use. That is a launch-era report; check the live regional listing for current pricing or in-app-purchase details.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.

Regional availability and AltStore PAL
At launch, users outside the European Union were directed to the App Store, while EU users were directed to AltStore PAL. The current AltStore site lists AltStore PAL availability in the European Union, Japan and Brazil. Storefront rules, device support and availability can change, so check that page and your local storefront immediately before installation.
Classic AltStore and AltServer
If the App Store route is unavailable, the Delta documentation describes classic AltStore installation:
- Download AltServer for macOS or Windows from AltStore. The site lists macOS 11 or later and Windows 10 or later.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer with Lightning or USB-C.
- Follow AltStore’s installation instructions and open AltStore on the device.
- Open the Browse tab, find Delta and tap FREE.
- Refresh the installation at least once every seven days. AltStore can attempt background refreshes on the same Wi-Fi network, and its documentation provides a manual Refresh All action.
The seven-day requirement applies to the classic AltStore/AltServer sideloading route. It should not be applied automatically to App Store installations or every AltStore PAL setup.

Delta is emulator software, but the game files loaded into it are a separate copyright issue. Obtain files only through lawful means and understand that rules for copying, backup copies, circumvention and distribution differ by jurisdiction.

Owning a cartridge does not automatically answer every legal question about downloading or copying a ROM. Conversely, it is too broad to say that all emulation is illegal: the emulator, the source of the game file and any circumvention or distribution may raise different issues. Do not use ROM-hosting links or unofficial “preloaded” downloads. For advice about your country’s law, consult a qualified attorney.
Troubleshooting common problems
Delta does not appear in the App Store
- Your country or storefront may not carry the listing.
- The listing name, developer metadata or availability may have changed.
- Your device or operating system may not meet the current requirement.
- You may be viewing an imitation app.
Check AltStore and the official Delta repository, verify the developer identity and avoid random IPA-download sites.
A game will not boot
- Confirm that its system is supported and that the file is complete and in a supported format.
- Re-transfer a lawful, known-good dump.
- Check the project documentation or issue tracker for title-specific problems.
- Do not replace it with a ROM from a questionable website.
A Nintendo DS game lacks a feature
Delta documents microphone support for DS, but individual titles may also depend on touch input, display behavior or other hardware details that vary across devices and builds.
Saves are missing after synchronization
- Confirm that every device uses the same cloud account.
- Wait for synchronization to finish before deleting local files.
- Keep an independent backup.
- Verify that the current Delta build still supports the selected provider and feature.
Classic AltStore says the installation expired
Reconnect the device and computer as required by AltServer, open AltStore and use Refresh All. The seven-day expiration is specific to the classic sideloading route.

Who should use Delta?
- Good fit: people seeking a straightforward interface for the documented classic Nintendo systems, who already have lawful game files and value save states, fast-forwarding, customizable controls and external controllers.
- Poor fit: anyone expecting games to be included, modern-console emulation, a completely automatic library, guaranteed support for a particular title or controller, or no file-management work.
Bottom line
Delta’s April 17, 2024 App Store arrival made classic Nintendo emulation far easier on Apple devices where the listing is available and showed the practical impact of Apple’s revised emulator rule. The app is legitimate, but it is not a source of games: you must supply lawful files, choose the distribution route available in your region and accept that compatibility varies by system, title, controller and operating system.
