Destiny 2 Error Code: NIGHTINGALE is usually a connection or local-installation problem—not proof that Windows 11 itself is broken. Bungie’s recommended PC troubleshooting includes retrying the activity, restarting the game, clearing launcher cache, checking game files, and investigating DNS or firewall issues.
First check whether Destiny 2 is undergoing maintenance or experiencing a wider outage. If it is, wait and try again rather than reinstalling. Otherwise, work through these nine fixes in order, choosing the repair steps for your storefront—Steam, Epic Games Store, or Microsoft Store/Xbox app—and test Destiny after each one.
Quick order: retry and relaunch; check Bungie’s status; restart your PC and network equipment; clear the Steam download cache if applicable; verify or repair the game files; reset Windows networking and flush DNS; test DNS or another connection; check firewall, VPN, and security software; reinstall or escalate the network issue.
What NIGHTINGALE means—and when to wait
NIGHTINGALE usually indicates that Destiny 2 cannot complete part of the connection or local-data startup process needed to continue. The code does not, by itself, prove that Windows 11 is the cause or that the game installation is damaged. Bungie’s NIGHTINGALE guidance covers launcher cache, game files, DNS, and firewall troubleshooting.

Before changing anything, check Bungie’s server-issues guidance and official status/update channels. If there is scheduled maintenance, a new update or hotfix, a widespread outage, or the error is appearing across many players or networks at once, wait and retry later. Local repair steps will not fix a service outage. If other players can connect and the problem is limited to your PC or home network, continue below.
1. Retry the activity, then relaunch Destiny 2
If the error appeared once, close it and retry the activity. If NIGHTINGALE returns, exit Destiny 2 completely and launch it again. Minimizing the game is not the same as exiting it. If the launcher appears stuck, exit Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or the Xbox app as well, then reopen it and start the game. This is Bungie’s first recommended step.
2. Check whether the problem is service-wide
Look for a Bungie service notice before making more disruptive changes. You can also ask a friend on a different connection whether Destiny is working, and check whether other online games or services work for you.

- If Destiny is broadly unavailable or under maintenance, wait and retry.
- If other online games also fail, troubleshoot the network before reinstalling Destiny.
- If other games work but Destiny fails only on one PC or network, continue with the launcher, game files, and connection checks below.
Bungie notes that Destiny error messages are often related to connection problems and that Destiny being offline may explain them. See its server troubleshooting advice.
3. Restart the PC, modem, and router
A restart can clear a temporary computer or router state. It will not repair damaged game files, but it is a straightforward way to test whether the network path is involved.

- Exit Destiny 2 and its launcher.
- Restart or shut down the PC.
- Unplug the modem and router. If they are separate devices, unplug both.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and let it stabilize, then reconnect the router.
- Start the PC, launch Destiny 2, and test again.
Bungie lists power-cycling the modem and router among its general Destiny connection troubleshooting steps. Rebooting is different from a factory reset: do not factory-reset the router as a quick fix, because that can erase Wi-Fi and ISP settings.
4. Clear Steam’s download cache (Steam only)
If you play through Steam, clear its download cache separately from verifying the game files:

- Open Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache.
- Sign in again if Steam asks you to, then launch Destiny 2.
Bungie specifically recommends this for NIGHTINGALE on Steam. Steam also documents cache clearing as a troubleshooting step for download and installation problems (Steam download troubleshooting). This operation is not the same as deleting your Steam library or uninstalling Destiny 2; Steam may need to download launcher data again.
5. Verify or repair Destiny 2’s files for your storefront
Choose the instructions for the launcher that owns your Destiny 2 installation. Steam’s download-cache clearing in the previous step does not verify the game’s installed files.
Steam
- Open Library and right-click Destiny 2.
- Select Properties > Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then relaunch the game.
Steam says file verification checks game-cache files and is a standard troubleshooting step when a game is not behaving correctly (Steam file verification).

Epic Games Store
In Epic Games Launcher, open your library, find Destiny 2, and use its Verify option. Let the check finish before launching. Bungie also recommends clearing the Epic Games Launcher web cache if needed; follow Bungie’s NIGHTINGALE instructions for that platform-specific step.

- Open Windows Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps, then find Destiny 2.
- Open the app’s Advanced options and select Repair.
- Test the game. Use Reset only if Repair does not help and you understand that app data or sign-in state may be affected.
Windows labels and layouts can vary slightly between Windows 11 builds. Bungie recommends repairing the Destiny 2 app for the Microsoft Store installation in its platform-specific guidance.
6. Reset Windows networking and flush DNS
Bungie specifically suggests flushing the DNS cache for NIGHTINGALE. If that alone is not enough, Microsoft’s broader Windows networking reset sequence renews the IP address and resets Winsock and TCP/IP. Run these commands in Command Prompt as administrator, in order:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsRestart Windows after running the commands, then test Destiny 2. Microsoft documents this sequence in its Windows connection troubleshooting. The DNS command should report that the resolver cache was successfully flushed; some of the reset commands may say a restart is required.
These commands do not repair Destiny’s files or change Bungie account data. A network reset can, however, disrupt custom network configurations, so note any special settings you rely on before proceeding.

7. Test DNS or a different connection
Bungie says DNS issues can rarely contribute to NIGHTINGALE and recommends disabling third-party DNS services. If you manually set a DNS provider on your network adapter, temporarily return it to automatic DNS, flush DNS as described above, restart Windows, and test the game. This is a diagnostic—not a guarantee that changing DNS will fix the error. Do not assume that one public DNS provider is best for every location or network.
If possible, briefly test Destiny 2 through a phone hotspot. It may use mobile data and can have higher latency, so treat it as a comparison rather than a permanent solution:
- Works on the hotspot, not on home internet: the result points toward the home router, ISP, DNS, filtering, or firewall path.
- Fails on both: the issue may instead involve the PC, launcher, game installation, account, or Bungie services.
A hotspot result is evidence about where to investigate, not proof of a single cause.

Bungie identifies firewall problems as a possible, though uncommon, cause. Make sure Destiny 2 and its launcher are allowed through Windows Firewall. Also check third-party antivirus, parental controls, DNS filters, and other security tools for blocks affecting the game or launcher.
If a third-party security product may be responsible, pause it only for a brief, controlled test, then re-enable it immediately. Prefer creating an appropriate allow rule over leaving protection off. Disconnect a VPN or proxy temporarily while testing, since its routing can introduce a separate connection problem. Do not add broad, unverified firewall rules or download replacement game executables.

9. Reinstall only after the earlier checks
Bungie lists deleting and reinstalling Destiny 2 after other troubleshooting steps fail. Before doing so, make sure there is no outage, complete the relevant storefront cache and file-repair steps, test another connection if possible, and confirm you have enough storage and download bandwidth. Reinstallation can help with persistent local installation problems, but it will not repair a Bungie outage, ISP routing problem, or network restriction.
If NIGHTINGALE is still happening
Stop repeating fixes that have already failed. Record which storefront you use, whether other online games work, whether Destiny connects through a hotspot, and which cache, file, DNS, and firewall steps you tried. Then use Bungie’s network troubleshooting guidance and its Help channels.
If Destiny works on another connection but not your home network, investigate router restrictions, NAT or UPnP settings, DNS filtering, and ISP routing. Bungie’s general network advice includes using a wired connection where possible, reducing competing network traffic, and checking NAT/UPnP; consult the Bungie network guidance before considering advanced router changes. Port forwarding is not a first-line fix. Contact your ISP if the issue appears specific to its connection, or Bungie Help if the error persists across networks after local repairs.

If it happens only on Wi-Fi, try wired Ethernet if available. If only one launcher installation fails, focus on that storefront’s cache and repair tools. These comparisons help narrow the fault without assuming Windows 11 is responsible.
