dhcpsnap.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file used by the DHCP management snap-in. If Windows says dhcpsnap.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is usually to restore the DHCP management feature rather than download an individual DLL.
The file belongs to the Microsoft Management Console, or MMC, tools used to administer DHCP servers. It is associated with the DHCP console, dhcpmgmt.msc, Windows Server administration, and Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT). It is not a normal game runtime, Visual C++ component, DirectX file, or general-purpose Windows networking library.
Fix 1: Install RSAT: DHCP Server Tools
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes, depending on Windows Update and your Feature on Demand source.
On Windows 10 version 1809 and later, including supported Windows 11 releases, dhcpsnap.dll is normally supplied through the RSAT DHCP Server Tools feature. If the feature was removed, disabled, or lost during a Windows feature update, reinstalling it restores the correct DLL, console files, dependencies, and registration data together.

Install RSAT with PowerShell
If the Settings page cannot find the feature, open PowerShell as an administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell or PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat.DHCP.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0

To check whether Windows sees the DHCP RSAT capability, run:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online |
Where-Object Name -like 'RSAT*DHCP*'
Look for a state of Installed. If the state is NotPresent, the feature is not installed. If installation fails with a source or download error, the computer may be managed by WSUS, blocked from Microsoft’s Feature on Demand source, or using an incompatible offline source. In that situation, use the matching organizational FoD source or contact the system administrator.
Do not copy the capability name from an unrelated Windows release. Feature on Demand packages must match the installed Windows release and architecture.
Fix 2: Restore DHCP management tools on Windows Server
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes.
Windows Server uses a different installation path from Windows client editions. On Server, install the DHCP role with its management tools instead of trying to add a client RSAT capability.

Fix 3: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes.
Use this fix when RSAT is already installed but Windows reports that dhcpsnap.dll is corrupt, cannot load, or is not designed to run on Windows. It is also appropriate when the RSAT installation repeatedly fails or the file disappears after an update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDISM repairs the Windows component store, which acts as a source for protected system files. SFC then checks protected files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Let the command finish. It can appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window while it is working.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows, then reinstall RSAT: DHCP Server Tools if the console still fails.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the DHCP console.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, review the CBS log, and consider supported Windows recovery options.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: retry from Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment if appropriate.
If the feature is simply absent, SFC cannot install it. In that case, add RSAT first.
Recommended Free Tools
When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and the official Windows feature installation remains the correct fix for a missing RSAT component.
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance explains the supported DISM and SFC process.
Fix 4: Install pending Windows updates, then reinstall RSAT
Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes.
A partially installed update can leave the DHCP snap-in, language resources, and supporting files at inconsistent servicing levels. This can produce messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because dhcpsnap.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading dhcpsnap.dll.”
- “dhcpsnap.dll could not be located.”
- “dhcpsnap.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording alone does not prove malware or identify the exact cause.
To update Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
- Reinstall RSAT: DHCP Server Tools.
If the error started immediately after a feature update, uninstalling the update is not the first step. First complete the pending update cycle, run DISM and SFC, and reinstall the feature. If the problem remains, use Windows recovery options or System Restore when available.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes, plus scan time.
Security software can quarantine a file that it incorrectly identifies, or the file may have been removed because the component installation was damaged. Check the antivirus protection history before restoring anything.
In Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
dhcpsnap.dll. - Check the detected file path, detection name, and action taken.
Only restore the file if it is clearly part of the expected Microsoft Windows component and the RSAT or DHCP management feature is supposed to be installed. Reinstalling the official feature is safer than extracting a quarantined DLL manually.
If the file repeatedly disappears:
- Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence.
- Run a Full scan.
- If necessary, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Review other security software logs.
- Check whether a cleanup utility or organizational policy is removing the component.
Do not repeatedly restore a file without investigating the detection. A legitimate Microsoft publisher name does not make every copy on disk trustworthy.

Fix 6: Check the console and component, not just the DLL
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.
A present dhcpsnap.dll does not guarantee that the DHCP console will work. The failure may involve:
dhcpmgmt.mscbeing absent.- Missing registration metadata.
- Missing language resources.
- An incomplete RSAT installation.
- A mismatched Windows servicing package.
- A dependency from the same DHCP management component failing to load.
Test the console directly:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
dhcpmgmt.msc
- Press Enter.
If Windows says it cannot find dhcpmgmt.msc, the problem is broader than one DLL. Reinstall the complete DHCP management feature.
You can also search Start for DHCP or DHCP Manager. If no DHCP administration shortcut appears but the RSAT capability claims to be installed, remove and reinstall the capability:
Remove-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat.DHCP.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat.DHCP.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
Restart after the reinstall and test the console again.
Fix 7: Confirm architecture and Windows-build compatibility
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes.
There is no universal dhcpsnap.dll version, size, or checksum. Microsoft has published different files for different Windows releases, servicing branches, languages, and architectures. A documented file from an older Windows Server release is not automatically interchangeable with a Windows 10 or Windows 11 component.
Do not:
- Copy an x86 DLL into a 64-bit Windows component location.
- Copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder.
- Use a file from Windows XP, Windows 7, or another unrelated release.
- Mix Feature on Demand files from different Windows builds.
- Assume that matching the filename is enough.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type under device specifications.
To check the Windows version and build, press Windows + R, type:
winver
Press Enter and note the displayed version and OS build. Use matching Microsoft installation media or a matching Feature on Demand repository when an offline source is required.

Architecture errors may appear as “not designed to run on Windows,” a 0xc000007b-style application failure, or a regsvr32 message saying that the module is incompatible. These messages do not mean that downloading a different DLL is the right answer.
Fix 8: Do not use Device Manager as the primary repair
Time needed: 2 to 5 minutes.
dhcpsnap.dll is part of DHCP administration tools, not the ordinary DHCP client networking driver. Device Manager normally cannot repair a missing DHCP management snap-in.
You may still check Device Manager if the error appeared alongside general network problems:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for warning icons.
- Right-click a problematic adapter and select Update driver or Properties.
This addresses hardware drivers, not RSAT. If the computer can browse the web and the only failure is dhcpmgmt.msc, focus on RSAT and Windows servicing.
When checking many device versions manually is taking longer than the underlying repair, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation through the full version is optional; updating a driver will not normally restore a missing DHCP management feature.

Fix 9: Use regsvr32 only as a limited legacy step
Time needed: 5 minutes, but only after the official component is installed.
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It works with DLLs that expose the registration functions expected by the utility. It does not install missing dependencies, repair the Windows component store, or substitute for RSAT.
Some older administration-pack setups and community guidance have suggested:
regsvr32 dhcpsnap.dll
Treat this as a conditional troubleshooting step only after confirming that the correct DHCP management feature is installed and the file comes from the matching Windows component.
If you test it:
- Open the correct elevated Command Prompt.
- Change to the directory containing the official file if required.
- Run the command.
- Read the complete result.
Possible outcomes include an entry-point error, an architecture mismatch, or a message that the module could not be loaded because a dependency is missing. Those results mean registration is not the solution. Reinstall RSAT and repair Windows instead.
Microsoft’s Regsvr32 documentation explains what the command does and why it does not apply to every DLL.

Why dhcpsnap.dll may be missing
The most likely causes are:
- RSAT: DHCP Server Tools is not installed. This is common on Windows client systems and can happen after a reinstall, feature update, policy change, or optional-feature cleanup.
- Windows Server management tools were removed. The DHCP role or its management tools may no longer be installed.
- The component store or protected files are damaged. DISM and SFC can address this case.
- A Windows update was incomplete. Supporting files may be left at inconsistent versions.
- Antivirus quarantined the file. Review the protection history before taking action.
- The FoD source does not match the Windows build or architecture.
- A third-party program is making an unusual request. A game or unrelated desktop application normally should not require a DHCP administration snap-in.
- The user is confusing DHCP administration with DHCP client networking. Losing this file primarily affects management tools, not ordinary network address assignment.
Should you download dhcpsnap.dll separately?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, modified files, the wrong architecture, the wrong Windows build, or a file with missing dependencies. Copying a DLL into System32 or a game folder may hide one message while leaving the actual Windows component incomplete.
Use these safe sources instead:
- RSAT: DHCP Server Tools through Windows Optional Features or the official PowerShell capability.
- Windows Server DHCP management tools through Server Manager or
Install-WindowsFeature. - Matching Microsoft Windows installation media or an organization-approved Feature on Demand source.
- DISM and SFC for component repair.
Manual replacement is an advanced recovery procedure only when the file is copied from matching Windows media or a known-good identical system, and ownership, permissions, architecture, version, and digital signature have been verified.
FAQ
Is dhcpsnap.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. dhcpsnap.dll is the Microsoft DHCP Management Snap-in component used by Windows administration tools.
Is it required on every Windows installation?
No. It is associated with DHCP management tools, not every Windows computer or ordinary DHCP client networking. A PC that only connects to a router does not normally need to open the DHCP administration console.
Is it part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?
The DHCP management tools are available through supported RSAT Feature on Demand packages on modern Windows client releases. Install RSAT: DHCP Server Tools instead of searching for an isolated DLL.
Why does a game ask for it?
That is unusual because the file is a DHCP administration component, not a normal game dependency. Verify the game’s installer and files, scan the system, and contact the software vendor if the request persists. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into the game folder.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Will SFC fix a missing RSAT installation?
Not by itself. SFC repairs damaged protected files. It does not install a feature that is not present. Install RSAT first, then use DISM and SFC if the installed component is damaged.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Usually, reinstalling the correct DHCP management feature is the better fix. regsvr32 only applies when the DLL supports registration and cannot repair missing dependencies, a mismatched build, or an absent RSAT installation.
What if the file is present but the console still fails?
Reinstall the complete RSAT DHCP feature, verify that dhcpmgmt.msc exists, run DISM and SFC, and check for missing language resources or dependencies. A single present DLL does not prove that the installation is complete.
What if the error returns after every repair?
Check antivirus quarantine, run a full or offline Defender scan, install pending Windows updates, inspect servicing logs, and consider disk or Windows recovery issues. Repeatedly copying the file back is not a durable repair.
