How runewords work in Diablo 4
A runeword consists of two different rune roles:
- Rune of Ritual: Sets the action that generates Offering.
- Rune of Invocation: Sets the effect and the Offering cost required to activate it.
Blizzard’s 2.0 PTR guide describes any Ritual Rune pairing with any Invocation Rune. When the Ritual action generates more Offering than the Invocation requires, the excess may count as Overflow and improve the Invocation effect. Blizzard’s Patch 2.1 notes later said Overflow bonuses had been added to every Invocation Rune, so read the rune’s current tooltip for its specific cost and effect.

How to equip and use runes
- Find an item with two sockets in a slot permitted by the current game rules.
- Insert one Rune of Ritual and one Rune of Invocation. Their effects work together: perform the Ritual action to build Offering, then meet the Invocation’s cost to trigger its effect.
- Choose a pair around your build. Consider how often and reliably you can perform the Ritual action, whether you can reach the Offering threshold (and generate useful Overflow), and whether the Invocation helps with your damage, defense, or utility needs.
- Keep the equipment limit in mind. Blizzard’s 2.0 PTR guide documented a maximum of two equipped runewords; check the live rules and item tooltips, since that guide describes an earlier test version.
The same PTR guide listed helms, chest armor, leg armor, and two-handed weapons as eligible slots. Those are PTR-era details, not a verified guarantee of the current live item rules.
Rune sockets, gems, and unsocketing
Patch 2.0 notes described rune and gem sockets as mutually exclusive: inserting runes into an item that has gems removes the gems, while inserting a gem into an item with runes removes all of its runes. Those notes also said unsocketing cost no gold. These are patch-dated rules; check current item behavior before changing valuable gear.

Where to get runes
Rune drop rules have changed across patches, so the following are dated examples rather than a complete current drop table:
- Blizzard’s Patch 2.0 notes named Vessel of Hatred campaign boss encounters, Whisper Caches, World Bosses, and the first Stronghold completion as guaranteed rune-drop sources; the Stronghold reward was limited to magic runes.
- Blizzard’s Patch 2.1 notes later said rune drops were guaranteed in Torment difficulties, with the amount scaling by Torment tier.
For current availability and drop rules, check the latest official patch notes and the game itself rather than treating these older patch descriptions as exhaustive.

Is there a complete current list of Diablo 4 runewords?
The official material available for this guide does not establish a complete Season 13 or 2026 catalogue of every Ritual Rune, Invocation Rune, pairing, effect, or seasonal recipe. Since the Invocation’s cost and effect and the Ritual’s trigger determine whether a pairing suits a build, use current in-game tooltips to compare actual runes. Do not rely on an older PTR-era or third-party list as a definitive current catalogue.
Expansion entitlement is also not settled by the mechanics sources cited here. Blizzard’s Lord of Hatred page says the expansion includes Vessel of Hatred, and Blizzard’s expansion pages state that the base game is required to play expansions. That information alone does not establish which current account or content entitlement grants access to runewords; check the game’s current access requirements before buying an expansion for that reason.
