It did not cancel preorders: the U.S. preorder date was later set for April 24, and the console’s June 5 launch date stayed on schedule.
Did Nintendo cancel or delay Switch 2 preorders because of Trump’s tariffs?
Nintendo delayed the U.S. preorder opening that had been scheduled for April 9, 2025. In a statement reported by TechCrunch on April 4, the company said preorders would not start on that date so it could assess “the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” Reuters also reported that explanation in its coverage of the postponement.

So “cancels” overstates what happened. Nintendo postponed the preorder date; it did not abandon U.S. sales or cancel the console. The company’s announcement came shortly after the Switch 2’s April 2 reveal of its release date and U.S. launch pricing. Axios noted that the reveal preceded President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement by hours, but that timing alone does not establish how tariffs factored into Nintendo’s internal decisions.
Did the Switch 2 launch date change?
No. On April 4, Nintendo said the June 5, 2025 launch date was unchanged. The delay applied to the U.S. preorder start, not the console’s release. The Switch 2 launched on June 5, as the Associated Press reported.
