Did Sonic Use to Be Brown? What a 1991 Sega Draft Says

A Sega of America story-bible draft says Sonic was grayish-brown before a treadmill experiment turned him blue—but it does not show the original game character was first designed that way.

Yes—in a Sega of America story-bible draft dated June 24, 1991, Sonic is described as grayish-brown before a treadmill experiment turns most of his body cobalt blue. That is an origin story in a US-facing licensing and marketing guide, not evidence that the Sonic in the original game was first designed as brown.

What does the 1991 draft say?

Sega of America’s Sonic Bible Draft II describes Sonic’s former color as “unexceptional, grayish-brown.” In the story, Dr. Kintobor has Sonic run on a treadmill. After Sonic breaks the sound barrier, the draft says: “Instead of his unexceptional, grayish-brown color, most of Sonic’s body had turned brilliant, cobalt blue, and his quills stood straight back in a stiff mohawk.” Read the June 24, 1991 draft.

Was brown Sonic in the original game?

The draft is not the original game’s story or a record of the game’s character-design process. Draft I describes the Bible as a guide for creating and marketing Sonic products, with character, storyline, quality-control, copyright, trademark, illustration and product-design information for Sega of America and its business partners. That makes the brown-to-blue passage evidence of an early US-facing story treatment, not proof that the game character began as brown. See the guide’s stated purpose.

SEGA’s official manual summarizes the original game differently: Sonic rescues South Island animals that Dr. Eggman has turned into robots. It dates the game’s US and European release to June 23, 1991, and its Japanese release to July 26, 1991. The manual does not give the treadmill transformation as the game’s plot. What does SEGA say about Sonic’s early development?

SEGA’s official Sonic Channel history says the 1990 mascot project considered several animals, narrowed the choices to an armadillo and a hedgehog, and selected the hedgehog. It points to the character’s spines as useful for speed-oriented attacks and to the appeal of the English word “hedgehog.” It does not say Sonic was once brown. Read SEGA’s character history.

SEGA SAMMY’s corporate retrospective likewise describes Sonic as a blue hedgehog mascot born in 1991. Taken together, these sources support a careful distinction: the draft tells a brown-to-blue fictional origin, while the official historical accounts do not establish brown as an earlier game design.
