What dispute did the 2023 headline describe?
Dean Takahashi’s GamesBeat article, published October 14, 2023, was headlined “A 14-year trademark battle over the name ‘Edge’ in gaming nears its close.” The “14-year” description and the suggestion that the case was nearing resolution were the article’s framing at that time—not a final legal ruling or a statement of the current status. The USPTO proceeding at issue is Cancellation No. 92075393, filed by Mobigame against Edge Games, Inc. on October 6, 2020. It challenges EDGE GAMES, U.S. Registration No. 5,934,761. What did each side argue?
A September 9, 2022 USPTO order summarized Mobigame’s pleaded claims, including prior rights and likelihood of confusion, nonuse, and fraud. Edge Games denied salient allegations and asserted defenses. These are positions recorded in the proceeding; the order’s summary does not establish that the allegations were true. Later filings should be read with the same distinction in mind. For example, Edge Games submitted the GamesBeat article as an exhibit in a July 11, 2024 filing and offered arguments about it. Accordingly, it is accurate to say the registration was reinstated in the listed USPTO proceedings and that an appeal remains pending—not that the dispute has definitively ended or that the appeal has already changed the result.
