Yes. Xbox removed Cortana as a built-in, on-console assistant in 2019. That ended the old Xbox One experience—not every form of voice control, and not Cortana across all Microsoft products at once. Xbox shifted toward integrations with external assistants, while Microsoft retired Cortana from its remaining major Windows and Microsoft 365 voice-assistant contexts in stages through June 2024.
When did Cortana leave Xbox?
Microsoft announced Cortana for Xbox One in 2015, describing voice features for finding games, friends, challengers, game information and achievements. Cortana arrived on Xbox One in the United States and United Kingdom with the July 2016 Summer Update, and could be used with a headset or Kinect. Microsoft’s 2015 announcement and Xbox’s 2016 update notes describe those stages.
On July 24, 2019, Xbox said it was moving away from on-console voice experiences. Users would no longer be able to talk to Cortana through an Xbox headset; the change was due to roll out to all users in fall 2019. The announcement date is clear, but it does not establish one exact date when every player received the change. Xbox’s announcement is the best guide to the transition.
What Xbox actually removed
The change removed Cortana as an assistant running directly through the Xbox console interface. It did not mean Xbox had ended voice control as a whole. The distinction matters because several different features were often described simply as “Xbox voice commands.”

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Cortana on Xbox: The built-in assistant experience, including speaking to Cortana through a headset, was removed.
- Kinect commands: Kinect was an input device, while Cortana was an assistant. Xbox supported Cortana with Kinect as well as headsets in 2016, but Kinect’s older “Xbox” command system was not identical to Cortana.
- External assistants: Alexa, Google Assistant and, at the time of the 2019 change, the Xbox Skill for Cortana offered ways to send commands through other devices or services. They were not Cortana running natively on the console.
- Dictation: Speech-to-text is a way to enter text, not a personal assistant. Xbox said the 2019 update would temporarily disable Xbox One virtual-keyboard dictation while an alternative was in development.
Xbox’s July 2019 announcement said its Cortana Skill could then be used through the Cortana app on iOS, Android and Windows, or a Harman Kardon Invoke speaker, for tasks such as powering Xbox One on or off, launching games and apps, adjusting volume and taking screenshots. That is a historical description from 2019, not confirmation that those routes still work today.
Why did Microsoft change direction?
Xbox said it was responding to feedback about how people wanted to interact with their consoles, moving away from on-console voice experiences and expanding cloud-based assistant options. Xbox later announced Google Assistant support alongside its Alexa integration. The company framed the shift as offering more choice through external digital assistants.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
It is reasonable to read this as a product-direction change: instead of maintaining a separate Cortana interface on the console, Xbox leaned on assistants already used through speakers and mobile devices. That interpretation fits the announcements, but Microsoft did not present it as a single stated technical or business reason. The change should not be reduced to “Kinect was discontinued, so Cortana disappeared”: Kinect was one way to provide voice input, while the 2019 decision changed the assistant experience and its direction.
What replaced Cortana on Xbox?
There was no single, direct successor called “Xbox Assistant.” The alternatives differ by what you want to do, and the historical announcements below do not guarantee that a particular integration remains available in every region or in 2026.

Alexa and Google Assistant
In 2018, Xbox described controlling a console through Alexa-enabled devices and Cortana-enabled devices, including commands such as launching a game. In 2019, Xbox announced a Google Assistant integration for Xbox One, with commands for powering the console on or off, launching games and apps, playing or pausing video, changing volume and taking screenshots. Google Assistant was announced for public availability in November 2019. See the original Xbox and Alexa announcement, Google Assistant announcement and November 2019 update.
These were integrations with separate assistant ecosystems, not a Cortana replacement built into Xbox. They could require another device, linked accounts and supported language or regional availability. Because the cited Xbox posts document launches rather than present-day service status, check current official Xbox, Amazon or Google support information before relying on an old setup guide.

Xbox app and console controls
For supported remote and account functions, the Xbox mobile app and the console’s own controls are alternatives to voice commands. They do not recreate Cortana’s conversational assistant, and specific app features or menu labels can change with software updates.
Gaming Copilot
Gaming Copilot is a newer gaming-focused AI companion, not a Cortana rebrand. Xbox’s September 18, 2025 announcement described an initial rollout on Windows PC through Game Bar and in the Xbox mobile app, with features such as recommendations, gameplay help, achievement information and play-history context. It said Xbox was exploring handheld and console support for the future; that announcement did not establish that Gaming Copilot was already available natively on Xbox consoles. Is Cortana still available on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S?
No: the old built-in Xbox Cortana experience is gone. If “Hey Cortana” or a headset command does nothing, the missing feature is not normally a headset, Kinect or console fault; the on-console experience was retired in 2019.
Cortana’s Xbox removal predates the Xbox Series X|S launch in November 2020. Those newer consoles did not inherit the legacy Xbox One Cortana interface as a standard feature. This does not establish that every other voice-related function is absent from current Xbox hardware; it means Cortana itself is not the built-in assistant to look for.
What happened to Cortana elsewhere?
The Xbox change was an early, separate step in a longer retirement. Microsoft’s Cortana end-of-support notice lists the later milestones: the standalone Windows Cortana app was retired in spring 2023; Cortana in several Teams and Microsoft 365 mobile experiences was retired in fall 2023; and Outlook mobile voice search and “Play My Emails” were retired in June 2024. Microsoft therefore wound down Cortana in stages rather than ending every Cortana feature on one date.
Quick Recap
What to do if an old Cortana guide does not work
- The Cortana setting is missing: Pre-2019 instructions for enabling the built-in Xbox assistant no longer apply.
- “Hey Cortana” gets no response: Headset access to the on-console experience ended with the 2019 change.
- Kinect is connected but Cortana does not respond: Kinect supplied an input method; it did not preserve Cortana after the console assistant was removed.
- An Alexa or Google setup cannot find the Xbox: Older tutorials may describe a beta, a retired service, or setup screens that have changed. Verify current support with the assistant provider and Xbox rather than treating the old instructions as current.
- You want game help rather than console commands: Gaming Copilot may be relevant on supported PC or mobile rollouts, but the cited 2025 announcement did not confirm native Xbox console availability.
