GTAV Enhanced adds ray-traced graphics, supported upscaling, faster-loading technology on supported devices, and GTA Online features; GTAV Legacy remains available for PCs that do not meet Enhanced’s higher requirements. The key choice is whether your PC meets Rockstar’s requirements and whether you want to migrate Story Mode or Online progress, since those transfers have important one-time limits.
Rockstar released the free PC upgrade on March 4, 2025, renamed the previous PC edition Legacy, and said Legacy would continue to be supported. Rockstar’s current PC purchase listing includes both editions. Rockstar calls the editions GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy, though many players search for “GTA 5.”
What’s different between GTAV Legacy and Enhanced?
| Area | GTAV Enhanced | GTAV Legacy |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics and upscaling | Ray-traced shadows and reflections, ambient occlusion and global illumination, plus AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS support. | Does not list those Enhanced features. |
| Loading and storage | Can load faster using an SSD and DirectStorage on supported devices; requires SSD storage. | Lists HDD storage in its system requirements. |
| GTA Online features | Includes access to GTA+, Hao’s Special Works vehicle upgrades, Career Builder, and a newer menu design, as listed on Rockstar’s product page. | Does not include the listed Enhanced additions. |
| PC compatibility | Has substantially higher listed CPU, memory, graphics, and storage requirements. | Has lower listed requirements and may suit systems that do not meet Enhanced’s requirements. |
| Progress migration | Can receive migrated Story Mode saves and Online profiles, subject to separate restrictions. | Legacy progress made after migration does not sync to Enhanced. |
These feature descriptions come from Rockstar; they do not establish a particular frame-rate or image-quality gain on every PC. Rockstar’s system-requirements page warns that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements.

GTA Online differences
Rockstar lists GTA+, Hao’s Special Works vehicle upgrades, Career Builder, and a newer menu design among Enhanced’s GTA Online features. These are documented edition differences; avoid assuming that every update or feature is exclusive unless Rockstar says so.

Rockstar describes Online profile migration from Legacy to Enhanced as a one-time transfer that does not delete the Legacy profile but cannot be reversed. The listed profile elements include characters, GTA$, progression, stats, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing, and player-created jobs. Rockstar Support also warns that migrating PC Online progress removes unspent GTA$ from the Enhanced balance. Check Rockstar’s current guidance and your balance before migrating. Shark Card purchases made on PC after March 4, 2025 are deposited into Maze Bank accounts in both PC versions, according to Rockstar Support.
For player-created missions, Rockstar Support says Legacy edits appear in Enhanced, but missions created or edited in Enhanced do not become available in Legacy. Ratings for Rockstar-created and verified missions are shared. This specific rule does not establish general third-party mod compatibility.

How Story Mode and GTA Online migration work
Story Mode save migration
Story Mode save migration is separate from Online profile migration. Rockstar’s documented process is PC-only: upload a Legacy save through the in-game pause menu, then open Enhanced and download it. Before starting, note the limits:
- Only one save is migrated per account. You can replace the uploaded save until it is downloaded.
- After a successful download, no further Story Mode migrations are available on that account.
- Legacy Story Mode progress made after migration does not sync to Enhanced.
- An uploaded save is available to download for 90 days.
- This process does not support migration between PC and console.
GTA Online profile migration
Online migration is a one-time move to Enhanced and cannot be reversed. Rockstar says the Legacy profile is not deleted, but progress is not a back-and-forth sync. Review the unspent GTA$ caveat and Rockstar’s current migration instructions before confirming.

Which version should you choose?
- Choose Enhanced if your PC meets its requirements and you want its listed graphics, upscaling, storage, and GTA Online features. Consider the migration limits before moving progress.
- Choose Legacy if your PC does not meet Enhanced’s requirements or you want to continue on the lower-requirement edition. Rockstar said Legacy would continue to be supported.
- Check before switching if you care about both versions’ Story Mode progress, Online balance, or player-created missions. Transfers have one-time restrictions and do not provide general progress synchronization.

Rockstar says migration does not delete the Legacy profile, but the move to Enhanced cannot be reversed. Rockstar Support also says unspent GTA$ is removed from the Enhanced balance during PC migration, so check current guidance and your balance first.
