Digital Agriculture Services (DAS) estimates that 9.7 million hectares of Australian cropping land qualify as “prime” under its 2026 satellite-mapping analysis. That is 37% of the 26.6 million hectares cropped in an average year across five states during 2021–2025. DAS uses “prime” for land that meets both a wheat-yield threshold and a cropping-frequency threshold; it is the company’s classification, not an official Australian land-quality standard.
What DAS means by “prime cropping land”
DAS classifies an area as prime only if it meets both tests:
- Wheat yield: a long-term average of at least 2.75 tonnes per hectare over 2018–2025.
- Cropping intensity: at least 60% of paddock area carries a winter or following-summer crop in a typical year, measured over 2021–2025.
The measures cover different periods: the yield threshold uses eight seasons, while cropping intensity and average cropped area use five. DAS’s national estimate is for New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia.
How the states compare
The figures below are DAS estimates. State area figures are rounded to one decimal place, so they do not add exactly to the national total.

New South Wales has the largest estimated prime area and the highest state share of cropped area that qualifies. Western Australia ranks second by prime area. These are mapped-area comparisons, not rankings of whole states: a state average can fall short of one or both thresholds even though some of its grid cells qualify.
Where the mapped prime areas are
DAS describes the largest continuous concentration as running across the north-west plains of New South Wales, from Walgett through Moree and Narrabri to Gunnedah and the Liverpool Plains, then over the Queensland border toward Goondiwindi and the Darling Downs.

- Moree Plains: 839,000 hectares of prime area, or 92% of its cropped area.
- Walgett: 337,000 hectares, or 77%.
- Narrabri: 267,000 hectares, or 85%.
- Liverpool Plains: 77,900 hectares, or 74%.
Outside that NSW–Queensland concentration, DAS identifies the Wimmera and Southern Mallee in Victoria; the lower Eyre and Yorke peninsulas and Mid North in South Australia; and the south coast and Great Southern of Western Australia. Esperance is reported to have 444,000 hectares of prime area.
How satellite mapping produces the ranking
DAS measures wheat yield and cropping intensity in 10-kilometre grid cells across Australia’s broadacre cropping regions. It also calculates local government area (LGA) averages from the same paddock data. An LGA’s reported prime area is the cropped area in qualifying grid cells whose centre falls inside that LGA.

This distinction matters because a whole-district average can conceal qualifying and non-qualifying paddocks. DAS reports that 61% of the mapped prime area lies within 46 LGAs whose whole-LGA averages qualify; the remaining 39% is in LGAs that miss at least one threshold on their overall average. The LGA count therefore does not capture every qualifying patch.
The grid result is still an area classification, not a parcel-level assessment or land valuation. It cannot establish whether a particular property meets the thresholds without property-specific data.

What the classification does—and does not—measure
The analysis combines two indicators: wheat productivity over 2018–2025 and cropping frequency over 2021–2025. DAS says it does not account for yields of other significant crops, including cotton, or assess profitability, soil type, rainfall or land value. “Prime” should therefore be read as DAS’s two-factor productivity-and-frequency label, not as a complete measure of agricultural suitability, environmental condition, commercial return or property worth.
The long-term average also does not imply a steady yield every season. DAS says that among the 46 LGAs averaging at least 2.75 tonnes per hectare over eight seasons, single-season wheat yields fell as low as 0.79 tonnes per hectare; its announcement also reports 0.86 tonnes per hectare in 2019. Those are company-reported LGA findings and do not mean every prime paddock recorded those yields.

How this relates to official Australian crop statistics
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) uses DAS satellite-derived crop maps as one input to its separate broadacre crop statistics process. Its methodology for the 2024–25 financial year, released in 2026, describes combining paddock-level crop maps with levy-payer register records and industry harvest data, then aggregating estimates to statistical areas. For areas beyond DAS map coverage, crop-area estimates use production amounts from levy registers.
That use of DAS mapping in official statistics does not mean the ABS endorsed or independently validated DAS’s 2026 prime-land thresholds or estimates. The ABS has also reported that its broader modernisation of agricultural statistics reduced farmer time spent completing ABS agriculture surveys by 97%, or approximately 20,000 hours per year on average. That result concerns the modernised statistics program as a whole, not DAS alone.
