There is no single cheapest DigitalOcean alternative for every Indian creator. If you want control and can manage Linux, an alternative VPS may work—but compare its monthly transfer allowance and overage charges against your stream’s bitrate, not just its advertised server price. If you want to avoid server setup and recovery work, a managed 24/7 streaming service is the more direct fit. For an always-on YouTube stream without a computer at home, StreamNeo is the first managed option to consider: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded video up to 4K at 60 fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Choose an operating model before choosing a provider
A DigitalOcean alternative might mean another general-purpose cloud server, or it might mean a managed service that runs your prerecorded stream for you. Those are not interchangeable: a VPS gives you more control but leaves installation, monitoring and recovery to you; a managed service reduces that work but comes with its own plan terms, limits and provider dependence.
| Approach | What you manage | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Managed 24/7 streaming service | Upload and schedule or loop videos in the service’s workflow; check its current plan, storage and eligibility terms. | Creators who want a browser-based route and less server administration. |
| Self-managed cloud VPS | Provisioning, encoder configuration, stream key handling, updates, monitoring and recovery. | Creators comfortable with Linux and responsible for operating their own stream process. |
| Home PC | Keeping the computer, software and internet connection running, and responding to interruptions. | Creators willing to depend on their local power and connection rather than rent cloud infrastructure. |
YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders, so prerecorded cloud streaming does not inherently require a dedicated physical encoder. Its verified encoder information lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge, and identifies Gyre for cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded streams and Upstream for 24/7 live video. These are different workflows; confirm current service availability, eligibility and terms directly before choosing one.
Managed option to try first: StreamNeo
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

DigitalOcean itself describes streaming infrastructure for organizations building streaming services, including CPU-optimized Droplets, load balancers, virtual private clouds, managed Kubernetes and Marketplace media applications. That positioning is aimed at building and scaling streaming services; it does not establish DigitalOcean—or any alternative—as the best or cheapest choice for one creator relaying prerecorded video to YouTube.
What to compare for Indian billing and regions
- Transfer allowance and overage: A continuously uploaded video can generate substantial outbound transfer. Estimate the stream’s monthly data use from its bitrate and streaming hours, then compare that estimate with the plan’s included transfer and excess-transfer price.
- Region: Consider the available server locations and the path from your encoder to YouTube ingest. A local data center is not automatically necessary for a single outbound feed; viewer-facing latency is not the same thing as the encoder-to-ingest path.
- Compute and encoding: Sending a compliant file without re-encoding requires a different workload from transcoding it. Do not pick a minimum VM size based on a generic specification; test the actual workload if you will encode on the VPS.
- Currency and payment: Compare the checkout currency, card conversion costs and any local billing or payment options. Confirm them directly because provider billing terms can change.
- Operations: Establish who restarts the stream after a failed process, VM or network connection, and who handles updates and monitoring. A low VPS charge does not include your time unless the plan explicitly says otherwise.
The CloudPe comparison reports that DigitalOcean has a Bangalore region, that its checked Hetzner locations did not include India, and that its example of an 8 GB Hetzner tier had four vCPUs rather than the two in its comparison tier. It also says the AWS Lightsail Mumbai bundle has a smaller transfer allowance than equivalent US locations. These are comparison-specific observations, not guaranteed current plan facts; verify the provider’s live region list and plan details before buying.

Estimate bandwidth before you select a VPS
Use the encoder bitrate as a planning input. A rough decimal estimate for continuous video is:
Monthly outbound data in GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 × hours streamed.

At 24 hours a day for a 30-day month, that is approximately bitrate × 324 GB. The estimate counts video payload only; actual transfer can differ because of audio, protocol overhead, reconnects and the provider’s billing method. Leave headroom rather than selecting a plan whose allowance exactly matches the estimate.
YouTube’s current live encoder settings page recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps. Using those recommendations as examples, the rough 30-day estimates are about 4,536 GB and 5,508 GB respectively. They are YouTube recommendations, not requirements for every stream: match quality to your source, audience and stable upload capacity. A lower bitrate reduces transfer but also limits delivered quality.

For perspective, YouTube lists recommended H.264 bitrate of 14 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps. Use the bitrate you actually intend to send in your calculation, rather than assuming the resolution alone determines the bill.

A VPS route is not a one-click substitute for a managed service. The exact provisioning screens and server sizes differ by provider, so verify those details in the provider’s current documentation. The operational sequence is:
- Choose a plan by workload. Confirm region, transfer allowance, overage rate and payment terms. Decide whether you will send an already-compliant file without re-encoding or encode it on the VPS; do not assume the same compute requirement for both.
- Prepare the video and encoder. Use an encoder such as ffmpeg and select settings supported by YouTube and appropriate for the source. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. If you change resolution or frame rate, test the resulting output rather than presuming it matches the source.
- Set the destination in YouTube Studio. Create or select the live stream, obtain its stream key, and configure the encoder destination using the provided ingest details. Treat the key as a password: do not expose it in a public script, screenshot or repository, and rotate it if it is disclosed.
- Use encrypted ingest and test first. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Run a private or unlisted test before relying on the stream; include representative motion and audio, check stream health, and confirm the output reaches YouTube as expected.
- Keep the process alive and plan recovery. Configure your own process supervision and monitoring for the server and encoder. Decide how you will detect a stopped process or lost connection and restart it; a VPS does not automatically provide creator-specific stream recovery unless the service explicitly includes it.
- Review YouTube policy as well as technical status. A technically healthy feed does not establish that the video is permitted or eligible for monetization. Use material you have rights to stream and review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and content.
YouTube’s encoder guidance also advises choosing a quality the connection can sustain, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health during the event. A cloud server can make a feed independent of your home connection, but it cannot correct a bad source file, an incorrectly configured encoder or a policy problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60 fps for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

Common decision mistakes
- Picking the lowest advertised VPS price: Check transfer included and overage first; continuous video can make bandwidth a larger part of the total cost than the server’s headline price.
- Comparing unlike server tiers: Label differences in memory, CPU and region, and avoid treating the cheapest plan as equivalent if its resources or traffic allowance differ.
- Assuming a nearby region is mandatory: Region choice should reflect the encoder’s route to YouTube ingest and the provider’s actual availability, not a blanket assumption that the audience must be near the server.
- Forgetting who owns failures: On a VPS, restarting the encoder and maintaining the system are your responsibilities unless you have arranged separate monitoring or support.
- Confusing a stable stream with eligible content: A running feed does not grant rights to music or video, nor does it guarantee YouTube monetization. Check permissions and current platform rules.
