A DigitalOcean Droplet can keep an encoded video streaming to YouTube around the clock, with Basic bundled Droplets listed at $4–$48 per month in the current pricing examples accessed October 3, 2026. That is the compute price, not necessarily the full cost: outbound transfer above your team’s pooled allowance is charged separately, and the right Droplet size depends on whether it only relays an already encoded video or must transcode it.
DigitalOcean Droplet prices for a 24/7 stream
DigitalOcean’s Basic bundled Droplet prices below are current examples from its pricing page accessed October 3, 2026. The listed transfer amount is pooled across your team’s Droplets, not reserved solely for the stream.

These are plan examples, not tested minimum requirements for an encoder. DigitalOcean’s official Droplet pricing page lists the configurations; no cited benchmark establishes which size can handle a particular video loop.
What changes the bill beyond compute?
Bundled plan billing
DigitalOcean documents per-second billing with a 60-second and $0.01 minimum, and a monthly cap of 672 hours for bundled CPU Droplets. For a Basic bundled Droplet running continuously, compute therefore does not exceed its listed monthly plan price. Billing starts when you create the Droplet and ends when you destroy it. These rules were last verified by DigitalOcean on August 25, 2026; see its billing documentation.

Outbound transfer
DigitalOcean pools each plan’s outbound transfer allowance across your team’s Droplets. Inbound transfer is free; outbound usage beyond the pool costs $0.01 per GiB, and unused transfer does not roll over. Your estimate depends on the stream’s actual bitrate and the team’s other Droplet traffic, so the included transfer figure in the table is not necessarily all available to one stream. DigitalOcean documents these rules on its Droplet pricing documentation.
To estimate whether the allowance is likely to cover a stream, use the encoder’s actual bitrate and the expected hours online to estimate monthly outbound data, then account for the other Droplets drawing from the same pool. No bitrate is assumed here: it depends on your video and output settings.

Hourly v5 configurations
DigitalOcean v5 resource configurations are billed hourly and do not have the bundled plan’s 672-hour monthly cap. Do not treat their configured hourly rates as a flat monthly price; calculate the cost for actual hours and include separately billed items. The bundled-plan cap described above does not apply to v5.
Choose a Droplet only after checking the encoder workload
A stream that relays an already encoded file is a different workload from one that decodes and transcodes video. The published Basic examples do not establish which configuration is sufficient for either workload in your specific setup. Before choosing, identify:

- The expected monthly outbound transfer from this stream and other Droplets on the team.
- Whether your selected configuration is a bundled Basic plan or an hourly v5 resource.
- How you will monitor the encoder and restart the stream if it stops.
Set up the YouTube stream and account for its limits
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s current instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder; keep the stream key private, since someone who obtains it may be able to stream to your channel.
Make sure the available upload bandwidth can support the total streaming bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and advises monitoring the stream; its streaming tips explain the network and monitoring guidance.

Long streams and archives
YouTube warns that “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. A continuous 24/7 stream should not be treated as one guaranteed, recoverable YouTube recording. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Copyright and monetization
You must have the necessary rights for everything in a livestream, including music and audiovisual material. YouTube’s livestream terms cover those rights. Separately, its channel monetization policies say repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible under the inauthentic-content policy, and reused-content review can affect a channel as a whole. A loop is not automatically eligible for monetization.
