On the providers’ pricing pages as observed on October 3, 2026, DigitalOcean’s $6/month example includes 1 GiB RAM, 1 vCPU and 1,000 GiB of transfer; Lightsail’s $7/month Linux/Unix example includes 1 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs and 2 TB of transfer. Those specifications do not prove equal real-world performance, and their transfer units are not identical.
The right choice depends on whether your VPS only relays an already-encoded feed or also encodes video, plus the bitrate, region and transfer rules for the selected plan. If you want a cloud service rather than managing a VPS, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud.
What workload are you comparing?
A 24/7 YouTube stream from a VPS generally means an encoder or relay sends one continuous feed to YouTube’s ingest servers. That is different from hosting the video for viewers to watch directly. In the first case, the server’s outbound transfer is driven chiefly by the feed bitrate and uptime—not by the number of people watching the YouTube stream. If the VPS also serves video to viewers, model that as a separate distribution workload.
- Relay: forwards a feed encoded elsewhere. Compute needs may be lower than for encoding, though the actual requirement depends on the software and configuration.
- Encode or compose: processes video on the VPS. CPU and memory headroom matter; a plan’s advertised vCPU count alone does not establish that it can sustain a particular resolution and frame rate.
- Viewer delivery: sends video to viewers from your server. This adds a distinct egress workload and should not be treated as the same thing as sending one feed to YouTube.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on resolution and frame rate. Check its current live encoder settings before selecting a bitrate; do not assume one bitrate fits every stream.

DigitalOcean vs Lightsail: published plans and transfer
The figures below are provider-page values observed on October 3, 2026. Prices and plan catalogs can change. DigitalOcean lists Droplet transfer in GiB, while Lightsail lists transfer in TB; do not treat decimal GB or TB and binary GiB as identical units.

DigitalOcean Basic plans start at $4/month, but the $6 example is the closer comparison to the listed $7 Lightsail plan by memory. DigitalOcean’s available specifications and CPU families depend on the selected plan.
DigitalOcean bandwidth and CPU notes
DigitalOcean says included outbound transfer starts at 500 GiB/month, depending on Droplet plan. Allowance is pooled across the team, unused transfer does not roll over, and inbound transfer is free. Additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB. Its documentation lists maximum network throughput of 2 Gbps for ordinary non-premium, non-GPU Droplets and 10 Gbps for premium CPU Droplets. These are published limits, not a guarantee that a stream will run successfully at a particular bitrate.

DigitalOcean lists CPU-Optimized Droplets for media streaming. That is provider guidance, not an independent performance test or a guarantee for a particular encoder workload.

Lightsail bundles are billed hourly up to the monthly plan maximum. AWS says several Asia Pacific regions and São Paulo receive half the listed transfer allowance. In the cited US regions—N. Virginia, Ohio and Oregon—the documented example rate for excess outbound transfer is $0.09/GB; rates vary by region. AWS says excess inbound transfer is not charged.
AWS describes Lightsail compute-optimized bundles as suited to compute-intensive workloads, including video encoding. That does not establish that a specific bundle can encode a particular resolution at a sustainable CPU load.

Estimate transfer for a nonstop feed
Use the bitrate you actually configure in the encoder and the hours the feed runs. As a rough planning calculation, a constant bitrate of 1 megabit per second transfers about 10.8 decimal GB over 24 hours, or about 324 GB over a 30-day month, before protocol overhead. The estimate scales linearly: double the bitrate or operating time and the feed volume doubles. This is a calculation, not a provider benchmark.
- Choose the resolution and frame rate, then consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance to set a suitable bitrate.
- Calculate expected outbound data from bitrate × operating hours. Allow extra for protocol overhead and any reconnects or redundant-feed arrangement.
- Compare the estimate with the selected plan’s allowance, accounting for DigitalOcean’s team pooling or Lightsail’s inbound-and-outbound counting and regional allowance.
- Check the provider’s current regional overage rate and include it in the budget if the estimate approaches or exceeds the allowance.
A VPS that only sends one feed to YouTube is not delivering a separate copy to every viewer. Conversely, if it also acts as the origin or distributor for viewers, that traffic can substantially change the transfer calculation.
Which provider should you choose?
There is no supported head-to-head performance winner for this workload. Choose from the requirements of your encoder, expected transfer and preferred operational model—not from vCPU count or monthly price alone.

- Consider DigitalOcean if its pooled team allowance, plan selection and documented transfer overage fit your setup. Its $6 Basic example has 1 GiB RAM and 1 vCPU; a workload that encodes video may need more headroom.
- Consider Lightsail if its plan bundles and regional transfer terms suit you. Its $7 example has 1 GB RAM and 2 vCPUs, but the higher vCPU count alone does not prove it will outperform DigitalOcean for your encoder.
- For either provider, check server location relative to your source feed and YouTube ingest, then test the actual encoder configuration. No universal minimum server size is established for every combination of software, resolution and bitrate.
If the VPS is also intended to distribute video to viewers, AWS says Lightsail CDN distributions are not intended for large video-streaming workloads and recommends CloudFront for that class of workload. A VPS transfer allowance should not be mistaken for an audience-delivery service.
Always-on operation and ongoing cost
Budget for the instance to remain provisioned around the clock. Both providers may continue charging for a server that has been powered off; stopping it is not the same as deleting it. Include storage and any applicable transfer overage in your own cost estimate, and verify current billing terms before launch.
For a VPS, the monthly plan price is only a starting point: a larger encoding plan, excess outbound transfer, regional terms or separate distribution needs can change the total. Compare plans for the same operating period and workload.
