The Dinosaur Game is Chrome’s built-in endless runner: guide a pixel-art T-Rex past cacti and pterodactyls using simple jump-and-duck controls. You can play it from Chrome’s offline page or open it directly at chrome://dino.
What is the Dinosaur Game?
Dinosaur Game—often called Chrome Dino—is a hidden Google Chrome easter egg. The runner appears on Chrome’s offline error page, where it turns a lost connection into a small playable game. Google’s Chrome team says the idea emerged in early 2014 as a playful trip back to a “prehistoric age” without Wi-Fi. The game debuted in September 2014 and reached all platforms by December after a rewrite to improve performance on older Android devices. Google’s account of the game’s creation explains its history.
The objective is to keep running for as long as possible. The T-Rex must avoid cacti and, later in a run, flying pterodactyls. The game’s designer, Sebastien Gabriel, summed up its basic design: “We settled on the basics of any good runner game: run, duck and jump.”
How to start and control the game
Play from Chrome’s offline page
- Open a page in Chrome while offline, or wait for Chrome to show its offline error page.
- Press the Space bar on a desktop keyboard, or tap the dinosaur on a mobile device, to begin.
Open it directly
In Chrome, enter chrome://dino in the address bar and press Enter. Google’s web.dev documentation also lists about://dino as a way to open the game. Direct URL behavior may vary with browser version or platform.

Jump and duck
- Jump: Press Space on desktop. On mobile, tap the dinosaur.
- Duck: Use the Down control on desktop to duck under an obstacle.
- Gamepad: Google has demonstrated arcade mode with gamepad support; see the web.dev Chrome Dino guide for its documentation.
What happens during a run?
The T-Rex runs automatically while the player reacts to obstacles. Jump over cacti; duck to avoid pterodactyls flying at a height that makes ducking useful. The pace and challenge build as the run continues. Google has added features over the game’s lifetime, including pterodactyls, night mode, and a birthday edition for its tenth anniversary. These additions do not change the core aim: avoid obstacles and extend the run.
How long can the Dinosaur Game run?
Google’s Chrome team said in 2018 that the game’s theoretical maximum run duration is approximately 17 million years—the time it would take for the T-Rex to reach the extinction of the dinosaurs. That is a design-limit figure, not a practical target or evidence that a player has completed a run.

The Chrome version is Google’s original implementation, available through Chrome’s offline page and the browser URL. Third-party sites may reproduce the runner or add visual and gameplay changes, but Google’s documentation does not endorse those clones. If authenticity matters, use the game in Chrome; if you choose a recreation, check which inputs it supports and whether it offers features such as touch, keyboard, gamepad, or night mode.
