DirectX 12 is the main graphics API generation on current Windows PCs, but the number shown by DxDiag is not a complete description of what your graphics card can do. DirectX is a family of Windows multimedia APIs; Direct3D is its 3D graphics component. Your actual game compatibility depends on the Windows build, driver, GPU feature level, shader model, and optional features.
That is why a Windows 11 PC can report DirectX 12 yet lack ray tracing, or why an older game can still need a DirectX 9 library. Use the version history and checks below to identify the problem before installing software or replacing hardware.
What DirectX is
DirectX is Microsoft’s collection of APIs for games and multimedia software. It provides standardized ways for programs to communicate with graphics, audio, input, display, and storage hardware instead of addressing every device directly. Microsoft’s overview is available at its DirectX support page.
- Direct3D: 3D graphics rendering; “DX11” and “DX12” usually mean Direct3D 11 and Direct3D 12.
- Direct2D: Hardware-accelerated 2D graphics.
- DirectWrite: Text layout and rendering.
- DXGI: Graphics adapters, outputs, swap chains, and presentation.
- XAudio2: Game audio.
- XInput: Modern Xbox-style controller input.
- DirectInput: Older input API still used by some software.
- DirectStorage: A modern storage API in the DirectX ecosystem, not a numbered graphics generation.
These components do not all share one synchronized version number. DirectX is the umbrella; Direct3D is the graphics API at its center, as described in Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 programming guide.

DirectX version history
The early releases are best understood as broad generations rather than a precise list of independently installable packages. Minor revisions were often delivered with Windows, service packs, drivers, or game redistributables.
| Generation | What changed |
|---|---|
| DirectX 1–3 | Established Windows gaming and multimedia interfaces for graphics, sound, and input. |
| DirectX 4 | Skipped as a normal public major release; it is not a conventional shipped generation. |
| DirectX 5–7 | Expanded Windows 9x-era graphics, audio, input, and development support. Microsoft’s period announcements include DirectX 7 coverage. |
| DirectX 8 | Moved Direct3D into the programmable-shader era and unified major parts of the graphics architecture. See Microsoft’s DirectX 8 announcement. |
| DirectX 9 | A long-lived generation used by many older PC games, including Shader Model 2.0 and 3.0 hardware. The later 9.0c runtime family remains relevant for legacy software. |
| DirectX 10 and 10.1 | Vista-era redesigns tied to the newer Windows display-driver model and shader architecture. DirectX 10.1 was associated with Vista SP1 and later support. |
| DirectX 11, 11.1, 11.2, 11.3 | Added tessellation, compute shaders, improved multithreaded rendering, and a feature-level compatibility model. The numbered updates largely followed Windows releases rather than separate consumer installers. |
| DirectX 12 | A lower-overhead, explicit graphics and compute API introduced with Windows 10. It gives engines more control over resources, synchronization, command submission, and CPU parallelism. |
| DirectX 12 Ultimate | An additive Direct3D 12 capability target associated with feature level 12_2 and hardware support for ray tracing, variable rate shading, mesh shaders, and sampler feedback. |
DirectX 11 versus DirectX 12
DirectX 12 is not automatically faster. It exposes more control and can reduce CPU submission overhead, but the engine must use that control correctly. Microsoft explains the design and potential benefits in its Direct3D 12 guide.
| Concern | Direct3D 11 | Direct3D 12 |
|---|---|---|
| Abstraction | Higher-level and simpler for many engines. | Lower-level and more explicit. |
| CPU overhead | Driver performs more work; mature behavior. | Can lower overhead and scale command recording across CPU cores. |
| Development cost | Generally easier to implement and debug. | Requires careful resource states, synchronization, memory, and shader management. |
| Compatibility | Broad support through feature levels and older hardware. | Direct3D 12 hardware support starts at feature level 11_0, but optional capabilities vary. |
| Modern effects | Some effects are possible, but newer capabilities are primarily exposed through newer APIs. | Can expose ray tracing, mesh shaders, variable rate shading, and sampler feedback when hardware, driver, and game support them. |
| Best choice | Often predictable on older or midrange systems, or with a mature renderer. | Useful for engines targeting modern hardware, high object counts, or explicit multi-threaded control. |
A game that performs worse in DX12 mode may have shader-compilation, synchronization, driver, or engine problems. Test both modes on that specific game rather than assuming the larger number wins.
DirectX 12 Ultimate
“DirectX 12 Ultimate” is not DirectX 13 or a separate replacement API. Microsoft uses it for a defined modern feature-support target, associated with Direct3D feature level 12_2. The four headline feature groups are:
Rank #2
- AMD Radeon RX 550 Chipset, Silver plated PCB & all solid capacitors provide lower temperature, higher efficiency & stability
- 9CM unique fan provide low noise and huge airflow for your GPU
- GPU Boost Clock / Memory Speed : up to 1183 MHz / 4GB GDDR5 / 6000 MHz Memory, Stream Processors 512, Perfect for 3D CAD/CAM working, video and photo editing, Video Games @1080p
- Support: DirectX 12, Shader Model 5.0, OpenGL 4.6/4.5, 4K Video Decode
- DirectX Raytracing: Hardware-accelerated ray-based lighting and reflections.
- Variable Rate Shading: Varies shading work across the image to spend resources where they matter most.
- Mesh Shaders: A newer geometry-processing pipeline for flexible, highly parallel scene generation.
- Sampler Feedback: Lets an engine track texture sampling and improve streaming and memory decisions.
Microsoft’s announcement is at the DirectX 12 Ultimate blog, with feature-level details in Direct3D’s new-releases documentation. A PC can run DirectX 12 without qualifying for the complete Ultimate target, and individual games may expose one advanced feature without supporting all four.
API version, feature level, and shader model are different
These three labels answer different questions:
- Direct3D API version: The programming interface an application targets, such as 11.0, 11.3, or 12.0.
- Hardware feature level: A standardized minimum set of GPU capabilities, such as 9_1, 11_0, 12_1, or 12_2.
- Shader Model: The shader-language and instruction capabilities available to the renderer, such as 5.0, 5.1, or 6.x.
An example might look like this:
Direct3D API: 12.0 Feature level: 12_1 Shader Model: 6.x
Feature levels are cumulative, but they do not predict frame rate. Two GPUs at the same feature level can have very different performance, memory capacity, and optional-feature support. A feature level also does not guarantee every optional Direct3D capability. Microsoft documents these distinctions at Hardware Feature Levels.
How to check your DirectX version in Windows
- Open Start.
- Type
dxdiag. - Press Enter to open DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- On the first page, read DirectX Version under System Information.
The tool also reports Windows and display-driver information. Its headline version does not prove support for feature level 12_2, ray tracing, or any other optional feature, and it does not list every legacy helper DLL. For deeper capability checks, use an application’s diagnostics or Microsoft’s DirectX developer resources at the DirectX landing page.
Why an older game may need DirectX 9 on a DirectX 12 PC
Windows keeps many DirectX components integrated with the operating system, while older games may require side-by-side helper libraries. A title can therefore report a missing file such as d3dx9_35.dll even when DxDiag says DirectX 12.

Install the official DirectX End-User Runtime supplied by Microsoft or use the game publisher’s installer. It adds legacy D3DX, XInput, XAudio, and related files; it does not downgrade DirectX 12 or replace the current Windows graphics API. Do not download individual DLLs from random websites: the files may be tampered with, mismatched, or bundled with malware.
- If the game launches normally, do not install another DirectX package just because the system reports DirectX 12.
- If it names a missing legacy DLL, install the official runtime or the game’s own redistributable.
- If it reports an unsupported feature level, a runtime cannot add that hardware capability.
Can DirectX be upgraded separately?
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the core DirectX components are part of the operating system and are updated through Windows Update. Microsoft’s installation guidance notes that DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12 are included with Windows 10-era systems; there is no universal standalone “DirectX 12 installer” that upgrades every machine.
- Windows Update: Delivers supported OS-integrated DirectX updates.
- GPU driver updates: Come from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or the computer manufacturer and can enable fixes or expose supported features.
- Legacy End-User Runtime: Adds older side-by-side libraries for compatible games.
- Developer SDKs: Provide headers, tools, and redistributables for development, not a hardware upgrade.
- Agility SDK: Lets developers deploy newer Direct3D 12 features while targeting a broader Windows installation base; it cannot create unsupported GPU features. See Microsoft’s DirectX developer resources.
Some historical versions were tightly coupled to Windows: DirectX 10 shipped with Vista, 10.1 with Vista SP1-era support, and DirectX 11 became available on Vista SP2 with the relevant update and was included in Windows 7. Further upgrades may require upgrading Windows itself.
What to check before buying a GPU
Do not buy a graphics card solely because its box says “DirectX 12 compatible.” Check the exact game’s required feature level, DirectX 12 Ultimate features, ray-tracing performance, VRAM, driver support, target resolution, CPU balance, and the power supply and case requirements. Official vendor ranges are available from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel.

A missing DirectX 9 DLL normally needs a runtime installation, not new hardware. A feature-level failure, however, may require a GPU that meets the game’s minimum specification.

DirectX is primarily Windows technology. Vulkan and OpenGL are cross-platform graphics APIs; Metal is Apple’s graphics API. DXVK translates Direct3D 9, 10, and 11 calls to Vulkan, while Wine and Proton provide compatibility environments for running many Windows games on Linux. None of these is a new Microsoft DirectX version.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DirectX 12 always better than DirectX 11?
No. Direct3D 12 can reduce CPU overhead and expose newer features, but results depend on the game engine, driver, workload, and implementation. Some games run more reliably or faster in DX11 mode.
Does DirectX 12 mean my GPU supports ray tracing?
No. The DirectX 12 API version and ray-tracing hardware support are separate. Check the GPU’s optional-feature support and the game’s requirements.

Can installing DirectX increase FPS?
A runtime installation does not upgrade the GPU or rewrite a game’s renderer. It may fix launch failures caused by missing legacy libraries, but performance changes require an appropriate driver, hardware, and game implementation.
Can I install DirectX 12 on Windows 7?
DirectX 12 is integrated with Windows 10 and later. Windows-version support, feature level, drivers, and the game’s requirements must all be checked; a standalone installer cannot reproduce the complete Windows 10/11 graphics stack.
The Bottom Line
Use DxDiag to identify the Windows runtime, but use feature levels and optional-capability checks to judge what a GPU can actually run. Install Microsoft’s legacy runtime only when an older game needs its side-by-side files; choose a GPU by the game’s feature, performance, and system requirements—not by the DirectX number alone.
