Discord’s Game Overlay works in the Windows desktop app, not in a browser, on macOS, or on Linux. Start by switching the game to borderless or windowed mode: Discord says its revamped overlay does not work in true fullscreen. Then check that the overlay is enabled globally and for the specific game in Registered Games.
First, identify what is failing
“Overlay not working” can mean the game is not detected, the overlay never appears, the hotkey does nothing, a widget is hidden, or Discord is failing to capture the game for Go Live. Those problems have different fixes. If the overlay works in other games but not one title, prioritize that game’s display mode and compatibility rather than reinstalling Discord.
Discord documents Game Overlay for the Windows 10 and Windows 11 desktop app. It is not the same feature as Discord in a browser, mobile overlay, Xbox Game Bar, screen sharing, or Go Live. See Discord’s Game Overlay guide for its platform requirements and controls.

1. Switch the game out of true fullscreen
This is the most important compatibility check. In the game’s video or graphics settings, change its display mode to Borderless, Borderless fullscreen, Windowed fullscreen, or, if needed, Windowed. Avoid Fullscreen exclusive or True fullscreen while testing.

True or exclusive fullscreen gives the game control of the display surface; borderless fullscreen looks fullscreen but behaves more like a desktop window. Discord’s overlay compatibility guidance says the revamped overlay does not work in true fullscreen and recommends borderless or windowed fullscreen. The overlay may also be hidden while the game window is not focused.
If the game offers no borderless mode, try ordinary Windowed mode. Some Discord builds may still offer a legacy overlay option; treat it as a compatibility fallback, not a preferred permanent fix, because Discord says it may eventually be removed. Exact behavior can vary by Discord build.
2. Enable the overlay globally and for the game
Turn on the global setting
- In the Windows desktop app, open User Settings → Game Overlay.
- Enable Enable Overlay. Labels can vary slightly between builds, but look for the Game Overlay section in User Settings.
- Fully quit Discord from the system tray, reopen it, and restart the game before testing.
Check Registered Games
- Open the game first, then go to User Settings → Registered Games.
- If it is missing, select Add it while the game is running and choose the actual game process, not just its launcher when those are separate.
- Make sure the overlay toggle for that game is on. If it already appears enabled but seems stuck, turn it off, restart Discord and the game, then turn it on again.
Game detection, local overlay permission, and activity privacy are separate. A game appearing as your activity does not prove the overlay can render over it, and changing whether friends can see your activity is not a guaranteed overlay fix. Discord lists Shift + ` as the default overlay shortcut; on a US keyboard, the backtick key is usually above Tab and below Esc. A custom or conflicting keybind can make a working overlay appear broken.
- Open User Settings → Keybinds.
- Check that Toggle Overlay has an assigned shortcut. If needed, use Add a Keybind and select the overlay action.
- Temporarily assign a combination that the game does not use for gameplay, push-to-talk, mute, or another shortcut.
- Focus the game window and test the new combination.
Discord’s keybind instructions cover Toggle Overlay and Toggle Overlay Lock. If the hotkey still fails, the game may intercept it or Discord and the game may be running at different privilege levels.
4. Match Discord and the game’s administrator privileges
If a game is running as administrator while Discord is not, Windows privilege boundaries can prevent keybinds or overlay functions from reaching it. As a diagnostic, try running Discord at the same privilege level as the game. Consider the launcher too: Steam, Epic Games, Battle.net, or another launcher may start the game elevated.

Do not make “run everything as administrator” your default configuration. Elevation grants broader permissions; use matching privileges to test whether the mismatch is the cause, and avoid keeping the change if it does not help.

Discord’s experimental System Helper is intended to help with keybinds and gaming shortcuts for some elevated games, but it is not available to every Windows desktop user. If Discord itself presents a System Helper prompt in Game Overlay, Keybinds, Voice & Video, or Windows Settings, install it through that in-app prompt rather than seeking a separate download. 5. Test whether another overlay is interfering
Overlay, capture, monitoring, and anti-cheat tools can compete for game rendering or input hooks, but their presence alone does not prove a conflict. Test methodically rather than uninstalling tools or disabling security software wholesale.
- Temporarily turn off nonessential overlays, such as Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner Statistics Server, Overwolf, OBS game capture, and recording or FPS-monitoring utilities.
- Restart Discord and the game, then test the Discord overlay.
- If it works, re-enable the other tools one at a time, restarting the game as needed, until the problem returns.
If the overlay itself causes crashes, lag, or other problems, Discord recommends disabling it for that game. An overlay-free game may be more stable, even if that means giving up in-game voice controls.
6. Check for game-specific compatibility
If the overlay works in other games but fails in one title after the activation, display-mode, keybind, and privilege checks, the limitation may be specific to that game. Older rendering methods, Vulkan, emulators, virtualized games, cloud gaming, remote desktop software, and games with aggressive anti-cheat or protected rendering can behave differently. None of those labels alone proves that a game is unsupported; compatibility can vary by title and Discord build.
Try the game’s borderless mode and confirm that the actual running game process is registered. If the title still blocks the overlay, it may not be compatible with that overlay configuration. Older Discord materials have listed compatibility concerns, but should not be treated as a definitive current blacklist for the revamped overlay.

7. Check whether the overlay is open but hidden
Press the overlay hotkey while the game is focused. If it opens but a chat, voice, or notification widget is missing, check whether that widget is hidden or unpinned. Use the overlay’s pin control and visibility or opacity options where available; Discord lets users control widgets individually. The overlay can also disappear when the game loses focus.
If its controls are visible but misplaced, reset or reposition them using the available overlay controls. Testing a single-monitor setup or default display scaling can help isolate an unusual visibility issue, but neither is an established general fix for Discord Overlay.
8. Try hardware acceleration only as a reversible test
Hardware acceleration is not a universal or guaranteed overlay fix. If the steps above do not explain the problem, locate User Settings → Advanced or the corresponding app setting, toggle Discord’s hardware acceleration off, restart Discord, and test. If nothing changes, restore the original setting.
Discord’s hardware-acceleration setting is distinct from Windows Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, GPU-vendor overlays, and Discord’s screen-capture method. Change only one setting at a time so you can tell what affected the result.

If the overlay fails across multiple compatible games despite the settings checks, a damaged local installation is one possibility. Discord’s Windows installer guidance describes a clean reinstall:
- Quit Discord from the system tray.
- Open Task Manager and end any Discord processes that remain.
- Delete
%AppData%Discordand%LocalAppData%Discord. - Restart Windows and reinstall Discord using the official Windows installer.
This removes local Discord application data. Before doing it, make sure you know your login credentials and can access your authentication method. Do not replace Discord files with unofficial overlay DLLs or modified clients. Discord’s full procedure is in Windows Installer Errors.

10. Separate overlay problems from Go Live and screen sharing
The in-game overlay and game capture are different features. Use the symptom to choose the path:
- Overlay missing in your game: Check Game Overlay, Registered Games, display mode, keybinds, and permissions.
- Game missing from Go Live: Open it and add it through Registered Games or the screen-share interface.
- Black or frozen stream: Investigate capture method, fullscreen mode, and capture settings rather than treating it as an overlay hotkey failure.
- Viewers cannot see your overlay: Discord says sharing the game window does not capture the overlay; full-screen sharing can capture it.

11. Escalate a persistent or game-specific failure
If the overlay still fails, note the Windows version, Discord build or channel (Stable, PTB, or Canary), game and launcher, display mode, whether the game runs as administrator, GPU and driver version, and whether the overlay works in another game. Include the exact steps that reproduce the problem when contacting Discord Support.
Discord’s Game Overlay guide identifies the hook log under %appdata%discord .0.***highest-number***modulesdiscord_hookhook. The asterisks are explanatory, not literal folder text: use the highest-numbered Discord version directory present on your PC. Providing that log can help distinguish an installation-wide issue from a game-specific hook failure.
When disabling the overlay is the better fix
If enabling the overlay reliably causes stutter, crashes, or input problems in one game, disable it for that title in Registered Games instead of compromising game stability. You can keep Discord open on a second monitor or phone, use headset controls, or switch to the game’s supported voice and notification tools. If the overlay works in other titles, there is little reason to reinstall Discord solely for that one game.
