If Discord Overlay is missing in PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, VALORANT, or Rainbow Six Siege, check the fundamentals first: use the Windows Discord desktop app, enable Game Overlay, add the actual game process, switch the game to Borderless Fullscreen or Windowed mode, then test Shift + `. Discord’s current revamped overlay does not appear in true or exclusive fullscreen. If enabling it causes crashes or an anti-cheat launch error, leave the overlay disabled for that game rather than weakening anti-cheat protection.
Check whether your setup is supported
Discord Game Overlay is a Windows 10 and Windows 11 desktop-client feature. It does not function on macOS or Linux, and browser or mobile Discord cannot provide the same in-game overlay. Steam Deck/Linux, Mac, and console users cannot fix this with a Discord toggle; use ordinary voice chat, a second screen, or another device instead. These three games are commonly used with Overlay, but Discord does not guarantee every game build, renderer, permission level, or third-party software combination. Detection and compatibility are separate: Discord may see a game without being able to draw over its current display mode.
Fastest fix sequence
- Close the game and leave the Windows Discord desktop app open.
- Open Discord User Settings (the gear beside your username), choose Game Overlay or Overlay, and enable it. Labels can vary between Stable, PTB, and Canary clients.
- Open Game Activity (or the detected-games area). Start the game, select Add it, and choose the running game executable—not only Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, or Riot Client.
- In the game’s video settings, select Borderless Fullscreen, Fullscreen Windowed, or Windowed Fullscreen. If unavailable, use ordinary Windowed mode.
- Restart Discord and the game, make sure the game window has focus, and press Shift + `. The backtick key is normally above Tab and below Esc.
- If the overlay causes a crash, severe input or performance problems, or an anti-cheat warning, disable Overlay for that title and retest.
Enable and test the overlay correctly
Confirm the global setting
Discord’s official path is User Settings → Game Overlay/Overlay → enable Game Overlay. Keep Discord running before launching the game. A per-game switch may also appear in the detected-games list; ensure the affected title is enabled there when that control is available.

Use a reliable shortcut
The documented default is Shift + `. Discord calls this keybind Toggle Overlay; it can be changed under User Settings → Keybinds → Toggle Overlay. Choose a combination the game does not already use. If nothing happens, test with the game focused rather than the launcher.
Check hidden widgets
An overlay shell can be working while its content is hidden. Open it and check that the voice or chat widget is visible and pinned. Test from an active voice channel, an unmuted DM or server, and with Streamer Mode temporarily disabled. Discord says muted servers, DMs, and group messages are not shown in Overlay, and text and voice displays have separate controls. On multi-monitor setups, a widget may also have moved outside the visible game area.
Use a supported display mode
Discord’s current revamped Overlay supports windowed and borderless/windowed fullscreen modes, not true or exclusive fullscreen. Game menus use inconsistent names: a setting simply called Fullscreen may be exclusive, while Borderless or Fullscreen Windowed keeps the desktop compositor active. Discord documents this limitation and workaround at its current known-issue page.
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS
Open PUBG’s Settings → Graphics and choose Borderless (or the equivalent windowed-fullscreen label). Apply it, restart PUBG, and then test the overlay.

VALORANT
Open Settings → Video → General → Display Mode and select Windowed Fullscreen or Windowed. Start Discord before Riot Client and VALORANT.
Rainbow Six Siege
Open Options → Display and select Borderless or the equivalent windowed mode. Restart Siege after changing it.
Borderless mode can have different latency or performance characteristics from exclusive fullscreen on a particular PC. It is nevertheless the primary current compatibility test. A legacy Overlay toggle may still exist in some Discord builds and can sometimes serve as a temporary fullscreen fallback, but Discord warns that legacy Overlay may be removed; use it only if the option is actually present.
Add the correct game process
If Discord does not list the title, start the game first, return to User Settings → Game Activity (or the detected-games section), select Add it, and choose the active game process. Do not add only the launcher. After a game update changes its executable, remove stale entries and add the newly detected process. Never install an unofficial “game detector” or replacement Discord client to force detection.
Resolve permission mismatches
If a game is launched elevated (for example, with administrator privileges) while Discord is not, keybinds and overlay shortcuts may fail. Discord is testing an official System Helper for some Windows users. If Discord offers the prompt, install it inside Discord, accept the Windows permission request, restart Discord and the game, and test again. It is experimental, limited in availability, and should be installed only through Discord; details are in Discord’s System Helper article.
Running Discord as administrator can be a controlled diagnostic, but it is not a universal fix and can create another privilege mismatch. Do not download “Discord helpers,” DLLs, or injectors from third-party sites.
Isolate competing overlays
Temporarily disable other overlays, restart the game, and test Discord by itself. Possible variables include Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience, AMD Software: Adrenalin, Ubisoft Connect, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, OBS or capture tools, Overwolf, and third-party Discord themes, plugins, or modified clients. This is an isolation test, not proof that any one product always conflicts with Discord. Re-enable each component one at a time after testing.

Game-specific anti-cheat checks
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS
PUBG Support’s technical-issues guidance covers Xenuine messages about interruption by external software and BattlEye errors. It does not establish that Discord Overlay is always the cause. Set PUBG to Borderless, add the correct process, disable other overlays, and test with Discord Overlay disabled. If PUBG launches only when Overlay is off, keep it off for PUBG and report the exact error and steps to PUBG Support. Do not exclude anti-cheat files, replace anti-cheat DLLs, or install an unofficial overlay fix.
VALORANT
Riot’s Discord account-linking integration supports social features such as invitations and presence; it is not a guarantee that the in-game Overlay will render. Use Windowed Fullscreen, start Discord before VALORANT, and manually add the running process. If Vanguard reports an external-software or launch problem, disable Overlay and retest. Do not disable Vanguard, alter its security settings, or use injection tools. Treat Vanguard as a possible compatibility factor only when a specific error or repeatable test indicates it.
Rainbow Six Siege
Siege uses BattlEye. Ubisoft’s published BattlEye FAQ says popular programs such as Discord are not intended to be blocked, while acknowledging false positives; that older guidance is not a guarantee for every current build. Use Borderless mode, add the actual Siege process, and disable Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Xbox Game Bar, GPU, and other overlays for an isolation test. If BattlEye reports an error, follow Ubisoft/BattlEye support instructions rather than modifying anti-cheat files. Disable Discord Overlay for Siege if it causes crashes, input failures, or launch problems.

Hardware acceleration
This is a secondary diagnostic, not an official guaranteed fix. In Discord User Settings, find Advanced or Appearance, toggle Hardware Acceleration, fully restart Discord, and retest. It may help a graphics-driver rendering issue but can increase CPU use or reduce Discord rendering performance. Restore the original setting if there is no change.

Legacy Overlay
If your client still exposes a legacy-overlay option, test it only as a compatibility fallback. It is not guaranteed, may be less stable, and Discord says the option may eventually disappear. Borderless mode with the revamped Overlay is the preferred path.
Reinstall only after targeted tests
Reinstalling Discord cannot fix exclusive fullscreen, a wrong detected process, hidden widgets, shortcut conflicts, or anti-cheat restrictions. Consider it only after the preceding tests fail and the desktop client itself appears corrupted. PTB or Canary can be used as a controlled compatibility comparison, not as a permanent requirement.
When leaving Overlay disabled is the right answer
- The game crashes, freezes, or develops severe frame-time or input problems when Overlay is enabled.
- The game displays an anti-cheat or external-software error that disappears when Overlay is disabled.
- Overlay works in other games but repeatedly breaks one title after display-mode and conflict tests.
Discord explicitly recommends disabling Overlay for a particular game when it causes lag, crashes, or other problems. This is safer than weakening anti-cheat. Continue using Discord voice chat, keep Discord on a second monitor, use a phone or tablet for chat controls, or use the game’s own party system. Discord’s screen-sharing documentation is a separate feature and does not prove that Overlay should work.
Use the symptom to choose the next test

Collect useful details for a support report
Include the game and launcher, Windows version, Discord channel and build, game display mode, whether either program runs elevated, enabled overlay software, the exact error text, and precise reproduction steps. If enabling Overlay crashes a game, Discord says its hook log is under:
