How skills work in Divinity: Original Sin 2
Character development is classless. Rather than choosing a fixed class that dictates a character’s entire progression, you select abilities and skills to shape a role. The official game manual explains that skillbooks teach skills and have combat ability requirements. Larian’s Divinity Engine documentation also describes skillbooks as items that can be found or bought and that teach learnable skills.
Larian’s support page describes the game as having “over 200 skills to master across 12 skill schools.” Treat “over 200” as an approximate published description, not a verified current count or a complete list of every available skill.
What the skill schools mean
Schools group skills by their associated combat ability. The school is a useful first filter when deciding where to invest, but it does not lock a character into a class. A skillbook’s listed combat ability requirement determines whether a character can learn that particular skill.

Skills are designed to interact. The manual highlights synergies between skills, schools, and surfaces, so a skill’s value may depend on what other characters can do and what is happening on the battlefield—not just its immediate damage or effect. Check the individual skill’s description for confirmed interactions rather than assuming every skill in a school behaves alike.
What to check in an individual skill entry
Skill details can involve several different costs and constraints. Larian’s engine documentation identifies parameters including the ability tree, action-point cost, cooldown, Memory cost, and Source-point cost. These fields explain what a useful skill reference should cover, but technical documentation is not a complete player-facing catalogue, and it does not establish the exact values for every skill.

- School and ability investment: Identify the skill’s school and the combat ability required by its skillbook.
- Learning requirements: Check any character-level and combat ability requirements shown for the specific skill; do not infer them from the school alone.
- Turn and build costs: Verify action points, Memory, cooldown, and Source points where applicable. These are distinct constraints, not interchangeable costs.
- Effect and targeting: Look for what the skill does, its target and range, and any damage or status effects confirmed by a current skill entry.
- Party and battlefield fit: Consider mobility, defense, support, control, damage, or summoning purpose, plus documented interactions with surfaces, statuses, or other skills.
Exact costs, ranges, and effects need to be checked against a reliable current entry for the particular skill and game version. The official sources cited here explain the framework but do not provide a complete current inventory or a version-by-version account of values.
How to choose between skills
When comparing two skills, weigh what each contributes against what it costs your character and turn. A high-impact skill may compete for Memory or action points; a narrower skill may be worthwhile if it provides mobility, control, or a useful party interaction.
