The divx412.dll error usually means an old application cannot find the DivX Video for Windows Codec. divx412.dll is not a Windows component, so Windows repair tools and current system updates normally will not restore it.
You may also see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because divx412.dll was not found.”
- “The file divx412.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading divx412.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Cannot find divx412.dll.”
- “Failed to load divx412.dll.”
The wording depends on the application and Windows version. The important clue is the filename: an old program, game, media player, video editor, or encoder is requesting a historical DivX 4.x codec.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the correct starting point:
- The error names a program you recently uninstalled, moved, or reinstalled: repair or reinstall that program first.
- The error appears when launching an old game or media tool: use the game launcher’s Verify or Repair option, then reinstall the application if necessary.
- The problem began after antivirus detection: inspect Windows Security Protection History before restoring anything.
- The file exists in the application folder but still will not load: investigate dependencies, corruption, and 32-bit compatibility.
- The application is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows: reinstall the original 32-bit application and codec rather than copying a 64-bit replacement.
- You only need to play an old video: try a modern media player or convert the video instead of rebuilding the obsolete codec environment.
- No trustworthy installer remains: run the old software in a controlled compatibility environment or replace it.
Do not begin by downloading a loose copy of divx412.dll from a random DLL website.

What divx412.dll actually is
divx412.dll is associated with the old DivX 4.x Video for Windows codec. Historical software records identify DivX Codec 4.x Build 307 as version 4.12 and associate it with an installer named DivX412Codec.exe. The codec was distributed for older Windows applications that used the Video for Windows framework.
Public file metadata commonly describes the file as:
- Description: DivX Video for Windows Codec
- Publisher: DivXNetworks, Inc.
- Type: Third-party application component
- Era: Older DivX 4.x software
Some public records report a file version, file size, and 32-bit classification, but those values come from third-party file databases rather than an independently inspected, vendor-signed binary. Treat them as identification clues, not as proof that every copy of the file is identical.
This is not the same thing as a current DivX 10 or DivX 11 component. Modern DivX software may play or encode media without installing this historical filename. Reinstalling current DivX software therefore cannot be assumed to restore divx412.dll.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the application requesting the file
The safest fix is to repair the complete application that needs the codec. Reinstalling the entire program restores its files, configuration, and supporting components together.
Find the requesting program
Start with the timing of the error:
- Note which shortcut you used when the message appeared.
- Right-click that shortcut and select Properties.
- Read the Target field to identify the executable and installation folder.
- If the error appeared from a game launcher, identify the game rather than the launcher itself.
- If the message appeared during a file conversion, identify the converter, editor, or encoder handling the file.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for the matching program.
- On older installations, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
If the message appears when Windows starts, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Startup apps, and inspect entries associated with old media software or games. You can also check the application path shown in the error or shortcut properties.
The application name matters because there is no universal program that owns every copy of divx412.dll.
Use the built-in repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program that produces the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If the program opens without the error, the repair restored its missing component. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
Some desktop applications do not offer Repair in Settings. In that case:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Look for Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Reinstall from the original source
If repair does not work:
- Back up the application’s projects, saved games, profiles, and configuration files.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original publisher, original installation media, or a trusted installer you already possess.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if the installer requires elevated access.
- Choose the full or custom installation option when it clearly includes a codec component.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the application using its normal shortcut.
For a game managed by a launcher, use its Verify, Verify integrity, or Repair files function before removing the game. This can replace incomplete files without deleting saved data.
A clean reinstall works when the program was incompletely installed, when its codec component was removed, or when an update left its private files inconsistent. If the installer never included the old DivX codec, reinstalling the application may not restore it.
Fix 2: Check whether a legacy codec package is genuinely available
Some older applications installed DivX separately from the main program. The historical package associated with DivX 4.12 is often identified as DivX412Codec.exe, but a currently supported official download containing this exact file has not been established.
DivX has stated that its general Codec Pack was removed from the main DivX Software bundle beginning with DivX 10.2. Do not assume that the current DivX download restores the old codec.

If the original application documentation points to a legacy DivX Codec Pack, verify all of the following before using it:
- The download comes from the original publisher or an installer supplied with the original application.
- The download uses a secure, expected publisher domain.
- The installer name and purpose match the application’s documentation.
- Windows Security does not identify the installer as unsafe.
- The package is appropriate for the old application and operating system.
- You have a restore point or a recent backup before installation.
Do not substitute divx4.dll, divx.dll, or another similarly named file. Similar filenames do not prove that the files have the same codec interface, revision, architecture, or dependencies.
If no trustworthy legacy installer can be verified, do not build the system around a loose DLL. Use a compatibility environment, a virtual machine containing the old application, or a modern replacement workflow.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may remove an old codec installer or DLL. That does not automatically mean the detection is false. An obsolete binary can be unsafe, modified, or bundled with an unsafe installer.
To inspect Microsoft Defender history:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to the application or codec.
- Review the detection name, original path, and source.
- Compare the path with the original application’s installation folder.
Only restore or allow the file when it came from a known-good original installer and you have established its authenticity. If the file came from an untrusted DLL download site, leave it quarantined and remove the source.
If the original installer is trustworthy but Defender continues to remove a component, obtain a fresh copy from the publisher and scan it before installation. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection just to make an old application start.
After reinstalling from a clean source, test the program again. If the detection returns, treat that as a security problem requiring investigation rather than repeatedly restoring the file.

Public metadata consistently identifies divx412.dll as a 32-bit Win32 module. It was designed for old applications, many of which were also 32-bit.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows compatibility support, but its private DLLs still must be compatible with that application. Installing a random 64-bit DLL with the same name will not solve the problem.
Check the application architecture through its documentation, installer, or a trusted file-inspection utility. Do not use the names of System32 and SysWOW64 as a shortcut for deciding where to copy files. On 64-bit Windows, those folder names are counterintuitive, and manually placing a codec in either folder may not address the application’s search path.
Instead:
- Reinstall the original application.
- Let its installer place codec files where the program expects them.
- Keep the codec beside the application when the original installer uses a private application folder.
- Avoid moving the DLL between system folders.
- Test the application from its normal shortcut.
If the program is very old, use its compatibility settings:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click the program shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program again.
Compatibility mode cannot create a missing codec, but it can help an old application load correctly after the codec has been restored.
Fix 5: Determine whether a dependency is missing
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that divx412.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependent module.

This can happen when:
- The codec file is damaged.
- A supporting runtime is missing.
- The application is loading an incompatible architecture.
- Another old codec has created a conflict.
- The program is searching the wrong folder.
- A security product blocked a dependent file.
First, inspect the application directory:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Check whether
divx412.dllis present beside the executable. - Do not launch an unknown DLL by double-clicking it.
- Do not rename or replace files merely because their names look similar.
Then check the application’s installation log, if one exists. Event Viewer may also contain loader information:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time of the failed launch.
- Read the application name, faulting module, and event details.
A trusted dependency-analysis utility can show which module is missing, but use one obtained from a reputable software publisher. If the result identifies a missing supporting file, reinstall the complete application rather than downloading individual DLLs.

Multiple legacy codec packs can interfere with one another. A program may find a codec with the right name but the wrong revision, or a shared Video for Windows registration may point to a damaged component.
If the problem began after installing another codec pack:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall codec packs you no longer need.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the original application.
- Test the application before installing anything else.
Do not remove codecs blindly if other production software depends on them. Record the installed codec packages first, and back up important projects before changing the environment.
For one old program, a private application installation or a controlled virtual machine is safer than repeatedly changing system-wide codec registrations.

divx412.dll is a third-party codec, not a protected Windows system file. System File Checker, Windows Update, and DISM should not be expected to restore it.
Use these tools when you also have broader Windows symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, failed system components, or unexplained Windows file corruption.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft documents running DISM before SFC for repairing missing or corrupted protected Windows files. A successful SFC result means Windows system files were checked; it does not prove that the DivX codec was repaired.
If you repeatedly hunt through Windows components and rerun SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds; repair actions are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns divx412.dll remains the definitive fix for this file.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Update related drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics or audio driver is not normally the owner of divx412.dll, so Device Manager is not the first place to repair this particular error. Driver work becomes relevant if the old application also crashes during video playback, reports display initialization failures, or produces device errors.
To check for driver problems:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any relevant capture-device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read Device status.
- Open the Driver tab to review the provider and date.
- Install updates only from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
If you are manually comparing hardware models, driver packages, and architecture, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional, and a driver update will not replace a missing DivX codec when the application installation is the actual cause.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32.exe registers self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs. A Video for Windows codec is not automatically a self-registering COM component.
This command is therefore normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 divx412.dll
It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.” That result does not prove the file is missing or damaged. Do not register the codec unless the original application’s documentation specifically instructs you to do so.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A loose DLL download can fail even when the filename is correct. It may have:
- The wrong revision.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing dependencies.
- A damaged or modified payload.
- An incompatible export set.
- Malware or an unsafe installer wrapper.
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 is especially poor practice. The application may search its own directory first, so the copy has no effect. It can also create conflicts for unrelated software and make future troubleshooting harder.
The safe sources are the original application’s publisher, original installation media, a verified publisher-provided legacy package, or a controlled backup whose authenticity is known. Let the installer place the codec rather than manually copying it into a Windows system folder.
If you only need to open an old video
Some programs request the codec only because they are decoding an old AVI file. If you do not need the original application itself:
- Make a backup copy of the video.
- Try opening it with a current media player from a reputable publisher.
- If playback works, use that player instead of repairing the old codec chain.
- If you need a different format, convert the video with a current, trusted media tool.
- Keep the original file unchanged.
Current software may handle the video without installing divx412.dll. This is often safer than installing several obsolete codec packs system-wide.
When to use a legacy environment
Use a virtual machine or separate compatibility setup when:
- The original installer cannot be verified.
- The application depends on several obsolete codecs.
- The program modifies system-wide codec registrations.
- The application works only under an older Windows configuration.
- Reinstallation continues to fail despite a clean, trusted source.
Keep the legacy environment isolated from sensitive files where practical. Do not use an untrusted old installer on a primary system merely because it contains the expected filename.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrevention after the error is fixed
Once the application works:
- Keep a copy of the original installer in a backed-up location.
- Record the application’s installation path.
- Avoid installing unnecessary codec packs.
- Create a restore point before major legacy software changes.
- Do not move codec DLLs between system folders.
- Keep important projects and saved games backed up.
- Note whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Keep a copy of the exact error and any installer log if the problem returns.
FAQ
Is divx412.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an old third-party DivX Video for Windows codec associated with legacy applications.
Will Windows Update restore it?
Normally no. Windows Update repairs Windows components, not application-specific DivX codec files.
Will SFC or DISM fix the error?
Not normally. They repair protected Windows files. Use them only when you also have evidence of wider Windows corruption.
Will installing DivX 10 or DivX 11 restore divx412.dll?
Do not assume so. Current DivX software is not confirmed to install this historical filename.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Use the original application’s installer and let it place the codec in the expected location.
Is regsvr32 divx412.dll required?
Usually no. Video for Windows codecs are not automatically self-registering COM DLLs.
What if the file is already present?
Check for a missing dependency, wrong architecture, corruption, a codec conflict, or an application search-path problem. Reinstalling the complete application is safer than replacing only the DLL.
What information should I collect for further support?
Record the application’s name and version if known, the full error text, your Windows version, the application installation path, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, antivirus detections, and any application or installer log. That information can reveal whether the missing codec is the root cause or only a symptom of an unsupported legacy program.
