DMZ is returning as an extraction mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with deployments built around objectives, looting, combat and the decision of when to extract. Call of Duty says the mode will include a level 1–70 progression track, an expandable Forward Operating Base (FOB), and several activities players can pursue in Hajin. These are announced features, not hands-on findings; the game is scheduled to launch October 23, 2026.
What is DMZ in Modern Warfare 4?
Call of Duty describes DMZ as an extraction shooter set in a persistent, open-world combat environment. Players deploy alone or with a squad as off-the-books assets operating behind enemy lines to recover advanced military technology. In each deployment, they can loot, complete objectives, fight AI enemies and rival Operators, then try to extract with rewards. The official overview frames those choices this way: “every deployment into contested territory forces hard choices about which objectives to pursue, what to secure, and when to get out.” Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare 4 announcement also describes changing weather, dynamic military objectives and hostile forces as part of the setting.
DMZ is announced as a mode within Modern Warfare 4, not as a separately described standalone game. Its activities and systems below are based on Call of Duty’s pre-release description and may change before launch.
How DMZ progression and the FOB are announced to work
Player levels and unlocks
Call of Duty’s DMZ Deep Dive, Part 1: Tour of Duty – Hajin Environments and Threats, Full Intel says DMZ Player Level will run from level 1 to level 70. The dedicated progression track is described as awarding key 3D Printer recipes, unlocking FOB stations and providing other content through level 70. The announcement does not quantify how this progression compares with the earlier DMZ.

The Forward Operating Base
The FOB is presented as the command center for managing progression, preparing gear and planning deployments. It is meant to grow as players complete Operations across Hajin, eventually containing more than a dozen stations. Call of Duty names Active Duty Operators, Stash/Loadout, DMZ Orders, Firing Range and Survival Kits among its described stations.
Other stations are unlocked over time: the 3D Printer, Gunsmith, Vendor, bounty leaderboard, Boss Board and Dog Tag Case. The 3D Printer uses resources and ingredients gathered during play to craft gear and upgrade FOB stations. The Gunsmith uses in-game DMZ Cash to create weapons and add attachments; Weapon Manuals expand the set of items players can build.

What can you do during a deployment?
Follow DMZ Orders
DMZ Orders provide mission directives, introduce players to the mode’s systems and story, and point them toward activity in the exclusion zone. The guide advises checking an Order’s requirements and preparing an Operator, gear and route before deploying.
Take on Dynamic Operations
Players can select a Dynamic Operation before insertion or start one by finding an Operations phone in Hajin. Completing one awards DMZ XP and DMZ Cash, followed by a Supply Drop. The guide says Supply Drop loot quality can rise from Common to Uncommon to Rare after successive successful Operations in the same deployment; the contents vary. One named option, Hunt Operators, sends the player against a full squad of rival Operators.

Choose lower-intensity Side Ops
Side Ops are described as less intense activities, including finding lost Supply Drops, repairing trucks and climbing damaged radio towers. A tower can reveal the general location of a nearby Lieutenant, giving players information without removing the risk of hunting the target.
Hunt Lieutenants—or avoid drawing attention
Lieutenants may be active whether or not a player is tracking them. They have increased durability and distinct combat behavior. Killing one can reward XP, cash, a weapon and possibly a key to a special loot room.

There is a separate risk attached to the Dog Tag Case: picking it up broadcasts the player’s position to all Operators. A quick exfil may therefore be a sensible response after taking it, rather than lingering to pursue more objectives.
Challenge a roaming Commander
Commanders are described as bosses that can roam between multiple locations. They resist many standard weapons and may draw nearby enemy forces, rival Operators or other squads pursuing the same target. Defeating one can grant high-value 3D Printer Ingredients, XP and DMZ Cash, while advancing progress on the FOB Boss Board.

What the announced design means for your choices
The listed activities offer different ways to spend a deployment: follow Orders, pursue an Operation, take a Side Op, hunt a Lieutenant or Commander, or concentrate on looting and combat. They are options described by Call of Duty, not evidence that every approach has been tested or balanced.
- Prepare around a goal: Orders and Operations give a deployment a clear objective; review requirements and gear up at the FOB before insertion.
- Weigh escalating exposure: rival Operators, roaming threats and the Dog Tag Case’s position broadcast can make staying longer riskier.
- Extract with what matters: DMZ’s announced loop ties loot and rewards to getting out, so the decision to leave is part of the mission rather than an afterthought.
When does Modern Warfare 4 launch, and what platforms are announced?
Call of Duty has announced Modern Warfare 4 for PC and scheduled its launch for October 23, 2026. The date is planned, not a confirmation that the game has already released.
