Original DMZ and Warzone Battle Royale asked players to do different things: DMZ was about completing chosen objectives, collecting items and extracting alive; Battle Royale was about outlasting opponents as the playable area shrank. This comparison covers the original DMZ beta introduced with Warzone 2.0 in 2022. A separate DMZ for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was announced in 2026, so its planned features should not be confused with the original mode.
What’s the difference between DMZ and Warzone?
In the original DMZ, the match was a deployment into an open map where you could pursue faction missions and other activities, gather items, and try to reach an extraction point. In Warzone Battle Royale, players dropped into a match and fought to be the last team standing as the circle closed in.

These are differences in the overall loop, not a claim that the modes had no systems in common. For example, proximity chat and Strongholds appeared in both, with different uses and objectives. Activision’s 2022 overview and its DMZ launch guide describe the original mode’s design.
How did extraction change the stakes in DMZ?
Extraction was the defining decision in DMZ: getting out alive converted some of what you found into a persistent advantage for later deployments. Staying longer could mean more time to pursue tasks and collect items, but also more exposure to AI enemies and other players. Dying ended the run and removed nonpermanent contents from your backpack.

That carryover made DMZ’s risk different from ordinary in-match scavenging. Battle Royale loot helped you through that match; DMZ backpack items could matter after the deployment, provided you successfully exfiltrated.
Is DMZ like Battle Royale?
They shared a Warzone setting and some features, but their win conditions and rhythms were not the same. Battle Royale focused the match around survival against other players and the shrinking circle. DMZ let players choose among missions and activities, with AI combatants adding a second kind of threat and extraction determining whether collected items carried forward.

Joe Cecot, Call of Duty’s Studio Multiplayer Creative Director, described DMZ as “an action extraction shooter” in an Xbox Wire interview published June 7, 2026. That description captures the extraction emphasis, but the interview concerns a new iteration rather than a confirmation that the original beta’s mechanics remain unchanged.

The name refers to two distinct iterations. The original DMZ was introduced as part of Warzone 2.0 in 2022. In June 2026, Xbox Wire reported that a new DMZ was planned to launch alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 later that year.

For the forthcoming version, Cecot described persistent inventory, an upgradeable Forward Operating Base (FOB), interactive stations and character progression across multiple deployments. Those are announced design details, not independently verified final release features. They should not be read as a description of the original beta, and the 2022 material does not establish the original mode’s current availability or support on any platform.

- Choose the original DMZ’s style if you prefer deciding what to pursue, exploring for useful items, progressing through missions and managing the risk of extraction.
