dnsperf.dll is a Microsoft Windows component named DNS Server PerfMon DLL. If dnsperf.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, identify whether the error comes from Windows performance monitoring, the DNS Server role, servicing, or a separate application before replacing anything.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or general-purpose DNS client library. It is associated with the DNS Server performance-counter infrastructure, especially in older Windows Server releases. A normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 client may not have it at all.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before running repairs, record these details:
-
Which program reports the error?
Note whether it is Performance Monitor, Event Viewer, DNS Server, Windows Update, System Recovery, a monitoring product, or an ordinary desktop application. -
When does it appear?
Does it happen during startup, when openingperfmon, while collecting counters, during DNS Server installation, or only when launching one program? What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Does the file exist, and where?
Search only local Windows locations first. Do not download a replacement while investigating.
These details separate a missing Windows component from a performance-counter registration problem. They also prevent installing a 32-bit or legacy server file on an incompatible system.
What dnsperf.dll is and where it belongs
Microsoft file inventories identify Dnsperf.dll as DNS Server PerfMon DLL and list it alongside Dns.exe, dnsperf.h, and dnsperf.ini in historical Windows Server security updates. The inventories include Windows Server 2003 x86, x64, and Itanium branches, with files differing by operating system branch and architecture. See Microsoft’s MS08-037 file tables.
That naming and the accompanying header and configuration files point to a performance-counter provider, not a general application dependency. Microsoft describes version-1 performance providers as DLLs that expose functions such as OpenPerformanceData, CollectPerformanceData, and ClosePerformanceData. These providers are registered through the Windows performance-counter system rather than ordinary COM registration.

The file is therefore a real Microsoft component with a narrow Windows Server role. Public Microsoft documentation does not establish that current Windows 10, Windows 11, or current Windows Server releases ship the same standalone file. Modern DNS documentation focuses on newer diagnostics and counters without naming dnsperf.dll; see Microsoft’s DNS logging and diagnostics documentation.
Do not assume that the correct location is always:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Windows architecture, release, role installation, servicing state, and component-store layout all matter. A file’s absence from a Windows client does not automatically indicate damage.
What the common errors mean
The exact wording varies by Windows release and calling program. These messages are representative rather than release-specific Microsoft quotations.

“dnsperf.dll is missing” or “dnsperf.dll was not found”
The program or Windows subsystem requested the file and could not locate a usable copy. Possible causes include:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- A protected Windows component was deleted or corrupted.
- A DNS Server role installation is incomplete.
- An old performance-counter registration still points to a provider that is no longer installed.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- A third-party monitoring program expects a legacy Windows Server component.
- An incompatible DLL was manually copied and then removed or rejected.
“The procedure entry point could not be located in dnsperf.dll”
The loader found a file but the file does not provide the function the caller expects. This commonly indicates a mismatched Windows build, wrong architecture, incompatible update branch, or corrupted file.
“dnsperf.dll could not be loaded”
The file may exist but fail to load because of corruption, missing dependencies, incorrect permissions, an incompatible architecture, or a broken performance-counter registration.
“dnsperf.dll is either not designed to run on Windows”
This wording does not prove malware. It can result from a damaged file, an incorrect architecture, or a DLL copied from a different Windows release.
Fix 1: Restart, update Windows, and retest
If the error appeared after an interrupted update, restart Windows before making deeper changes.
- Save your work and restart the computer.
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart again if requested.
- Repeat the original action, such as opening Performance Monitor or starting DNS Server.
On Windows Server, use your organization’s approved servicing process. Do not install a modern Windows DLL on an old server. Microsoft’s historical update tables show that the file varied by Windows Server branch, service pack, architecture, and update branch.
If the machine is running Windows Server 2003 or another obsolete release, normal servicing may no longer be available. Preserve the exact operating-system details and plan migration rather than repeatedly replacing individual files.
Fix 2: Repair the Windows component store and protected files
This is the safest general repair when the error appears in PerfMon, Perflib, DNS Server administration, Windows servicing, or another Windows component.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is running.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows image and component store. If Windows Update cannot supply the required repair files, use matching Windows installation media or an approved network source. The source must correspond closely to the installed edition, build, and architecture. Microsoft documents alternate sources and /LimitAccess in its Windows image repair guidance.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart and test the failing operation.

SFC scans protected Windows resources and can replace files that do not match the expected Windows version. If it reports that it could not repair some files, inspect:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Run DISM again if necessary, then rerun SFC. SFC does not guarantee that every protected file will be replaced, particularly when the component store or repair source is also damaged. Microsoft describes the command and its limits in the System File Checker documentation.
If manually hunting through component-store files and repeating DISM and SFC leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required when the built-in repair path resolves the issue.
Fix 3: Check whether the DNS Server role is installed
This step applies to Windows Server, not an ordinary Windows client.
Open PowerShell as an administrator:
- Open Start and type
PowerShell. - Right-click Windows PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
powershell
Get-WindowsFeature -Name DNS
Check the result:
Installedindicates that the DNS Server role is installed.Availableindicates that the role can be installed but is not currently installed.- A missing or unexpected result should be investigated against the server edition.
To install the role on a supported Windows Server release, run:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Install-WindowsFeature -Name DNS
Restart if Windows requests it, then test DNS Server and Performance Monitor again. Microsoft also documents the graphical route: Server Manager → Manage → Add Roles and Features → DNS Server. Follow Microsoft’s DNS Server installation guide.
Do not add the DNS Server role to a client PC simply because an application mentions dnsperf.dll. A client normally performs DNS resolution without hosting the Windows Server DNS role.
If the role was recently removed, partially installed, or restored from an image, use Server Manager to remove and reinstall it only after checking the server’s DNS configuration, zones, forwarders, and organization backup procedures.
Fix 4: Distinguish a missing file from a broken performance-counter registration
A file can exist while Performance Monitor or Event Viewer reports that its provider cannot load. In that situation, copying another DLL will not repair the registration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLook for the context in Event Viewer:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs → System.
- Select Filter Current Log.
- Search for
Perflib,Performance,DNS, or the relevant event source. - Record the event ID and the named service or provider.
You can query a known counter service from an elevated Command Prompt:
lodctr /Q:"<service name>"
Replace <service name> with the service named in the event. The command reports the registered counter information. Microsoft documents lodctr and the counter-library rebuild process in its performance-counter repair guidance.
If the provider’s correct .ini file is available from the matching Windows installation, role installation, or approved recovery source, use the documented registration procedure for that provider. Do not guess the service name or point lodctr at an unrelated file.

The broad rebuild command is:
lodctr /R
Run it only from an elevated prompt and only after recording the current problem. It rebuilds broad performance-counter configuration and can affect third-party counters. It is not a harmless substitute for identifying the broken provider.
After rebuilding, restart the affected service or restart Windows, then test the original counter collection. If only a third-party monitoring product fails, repair or update that product instead of changing Windows performance registrations blindly.
Fix 5: Verify the file’s path, signature, and architecture
If dnsperf.dll exists, verify it before trusting it.
Check the digital signature
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
You can also use PowerShell:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:pathtodnsperf.dll"
Replace the path with the actual file location. A valid signature does not prove that the file belongs in that location, but an invalid or missing signature is a reason to stop and investigate.
Check the file architecture
A 32-bit application generally needs a 32-bit DLL, while a 64-bit application needs a 64-bit DLL. Windows directory names alone are not a safe substitute for verifying the actual binary and its source.

Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
If the problem began immediately after a security scan:
- Open the installed antivirus or endpoint-security console.
- Open Quarantine, Protection history, or the equivalent area.
- Search for
dnsperf.dll. - Record the detection name, original path, timestamp, and action taken.
- Do not restore it automatically.
- Validate the path, Microsoft signature, Windows build, and role before considering restoration.
Restore the file only when its origin is credible and the security product or vendor has validated the detection. Add an exclusion only after the detection has been investigated. A missing DLL can be the result of unauthorized deletion, but restoring a malicious file is worse than leaving the component quarantined.
Fix 7: Repair the application that reports the error
If the error appears only when launching one third-party program or monitoring agent, the program may be requesting a legacy Windows Server provider that it should not require on that operating system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the application’s supported repair path:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official vendor source.
- Check whether the application supports the installed Windows edition and architecture.
For a desktop program, do not install the DNS Server role merely to satisfy its error message. Contact the software vendor with the exact error, application version, Windows build, and file path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Check drivers only when the surrounding error identifies one
dnsperf.dll is not a device driver. Updating a graphics, printer, network, or storage driver is not a direct fix unless the actual event identifies a driver or the issue began with a device installation.

If Device Manager is part of the same failure:
- Press
Windows + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart and test again.
Do not replace dnsperf.dll with a driver package. If tracking down stale hardware drivers manually is the separate problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is not necessary for a DNS performance-counter error that has no driver evidence.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 dnsperf.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that implement registration exports such as DllRegisterServer. A performance-counter provider is configured through Perflib and tools such as lodctr, not ordinary COM registration. Microsoft explains the relevant registration error in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If regsvr32 reports that an entry point is missing, that usually confirms that this is the wrong repair method. It does not prove that the DLL itself is bad.
Why downloading or copying the DLL is unsafe
Avoid DLL download repositories and random forum attachments. They can supply:
- Malware or modified binaries.
- The wrong Windows Server branch.
- The wrong architecture.
- A file with incompatible exports.
- A file that is unsigned or falsely labeled.
- A DLL without the required Perflib registration.
- A replacement that hides the underlying component-store damage.
Copying dnsperf.dll from another computer is also unsafe as a normal repair. Even two machines with the same apparent Windows edition may differ in build, architecture, updates, role state, and counter registration.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the DNS Server role installation source, or matching Microsoft installation media instead. There is no verified Microsoft standalone redistributable named a dnsperf.dll package.
FAQ
Is dnsperf.dll malware?
Not by itself. Microsoft documents a genuine file named Dnsperf.dll as the DNS Server performance-counter DLL. Validate the file’s signature and path rather than judging only by its name.
Should a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC have this file?
Not necessarily. The file is associated with DNS Server performance infrastructure and legacy Windows Server evidence. It is not required for ordinary client DNS resolution.
Is dnsperf.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. Do not install those runtimes unless the failing application independently identifies one of them as its missing dependency.
Is it always in System32 or SysWOW64?
No universal path should be assumed. The correct location depends on Windows release, architecture, role, and component installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Usually no. Performance-counter providers use Perflib registration and lodctr, not ordinary COM registration.
What if the file exists but PerfMon still fails?
Treat that as a possible registration problem. Check Event Viewer, identify the provider or service, run lodctr /Q:"<service name>", and follow the matching Microsoft counter-repair procedure.
What if SFC cannot repair it?
Run DISM first or again, confirm that the repair source matches the installed Windows build, inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, and rerun SFC. If the server is obsolete, plan migration instead of sourcing an unrelated DLL.
What should I include in a support request?
Include the Windows edition and build, system architecture, installed DNS Server role status, exact error text, event ID, file path, digital-signature result, and whether the error occurs in PerfMon, DNS Server, Windows servicing, or a third-party program.
