The bill depends on which cloud product sends the video, its route to YouTube, the region, and the provider’s pricing rules. Google Cloud lists no-charge data transfer from specified virtual machines to YouTube; AWS and Azure publish separate allowances and conditions that do not make every YouTube stream free. Compute, encoding, and other service charges are separate from network egress.
What cloud egress means for a YouTube stream
Egress is data leaving a cloud provider’s network. For a cloud-hosted encoder, the relevant transfer is the outgoing feed to YouTube’s ingest server. YouTube’s later delivery of the broadcast to viewers is a different leg and is not the cloud sender’s egress to YouTube. If a relay, CDN, or multistreaming service sits between the encoder and YouTube, check the pricing and traffic for each leg.
A useful estimate needs the sending product (such as a VM or managed media service), region, route, outgoing bitrate, redundant feeds, and account allowances. Network transfer is only one potential line item: compute instances, managed encoders, media services, IP addresses, and storage may be billed separately.
How the major provider rules differ

Provider rules are not interchangeable. In particular, do not apply Google Cloud’s named VM-to-YouTube category to a managed media service, AWS, Azure, or a third-party relay.

Estimate the traffic from your configured bitrate
For a first-pass estimate, convert the outgoing bitrate to megabits per second, divide by 8 to get megabytes per second, and multiply by stream duration in seconds. Convert the result to the units and meter used by your cloud provider, then apply the relevant tier and allowance. Actual usage can be higher because of audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, or redundant encoders; use measured billing data when available.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 video at 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are recommended settings, not a measurement of any particular stream. At 10 Mbps, video payload alone works out to about 108 GB for 24 hours in decimal units: 10 megabits per second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000. Audio and network overhead add to that estimate.

For a stream-specific starting point, YouTube provides encoder settings and bitrates. The cloud provider’s own usage meter and pricing for the relevant product remain the basis for forecasting a bill.
Check the complete route and the separate resource bill
- Identify the source product. A VM, managed live-streaming product, storage service, or relay may have a different pricing schedule.
- Confirm destination treatment. A provider may price transfer to a named Google service differently from ordinary public-internet egress.
- Use the right region and tier. Internet rates, allowances, and network tiers may vary by geography or configuration.
- Include all feeds. Add any backup encoder, redundant output, or relay path rather than estimating only one feed.
- Check non-network charges. Compute, encoding or transcoding, managed media services, and other resources are not settled by an egress allowance.
Prices and technical guidance can change. The provider pricing pages above and YouTube’s encoder guidance were checked on October 3, 2026; confirm current terms and the service-specific meter before budgeting.

Plan for long-running broadcasts and YouTube archives
A 24/7 operation needs a plan for what happens if the encoder, connection, or YouTube ingest session stops, as well as a billing estimate. YouTube’s cited guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a single stream longer than 12 hours will be automatically archived or can run indefinitely.
