A claim can affect the archived video—for example, by blocking it or assigning its monetization to the claimant. During a live broadcast, YouTube may warn you, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if it detects third-party content that remains. A valid copyright removal request, by contrast, can remove the video and give your channel a strike, which may affect monetization or live-stream access.
What happens while the livestream is live?
YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, a placeholder may replace the stream and YouTube may warn you to stop using the content. If it remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A stream may also be terminated if the channel receives a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
This live interruption is separate from a Content ID claim on an archive. YouTube says Content ID claims are made after a livestream ends if the creator chooses to archive it. The live broadcast can therefore be interrupted, and the archived video can later receive a claim.
If you have a licence
If you have permission to use third-party material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a livestream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted, even if you have a licence or limit the stream to territories where you own the necessary rights. Keep records of the licence and confirm that the relevant channel is allowlisted before relying on the material in a live broadcast.

Content ID claim versus copyright strike
| Outcome | What it means | Possible effect |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim | YouTube’s matching system identifies material in a video. A rights holder’s policy determines what happens. | The video may be blocked, monetized by the claimant (sometimes with revenue sharing), or tracked. A claim alone is not a copyright strike. |
| Copyright removal request | A legal request to remove content. If YouTube determines the request appears valid, it removes the video and applies a copyright strike to the channel. | This is the route that can turn a video-level copyright issue into a channel-level strike. |
Availability and monetization policies can vary by geography. A tracking or monetization claim generally leaves the video viewable, while a block can prevent viewers from watching it. Check the claim’s details in YouTube Studio to see the policy applied to your video. YouTube Help: Content ID claims · YouTube Help: Copyright strike basics
How a claim can affect the rest of your channel
An ordinary Content ID claim does not automatically disable your channel, remove you from monetization, or count as a strike. Its direct effect is on the claimed video and depends on the rights holder’s policy. However, YouTube says copyright issues—including strikes and videos with visuals matching third-party content—may contribute to suspension of channel monetization. That is distinct from a claim automatically causing suspension. YouTube Help: YouTube channel monetization policies

A strike can have broader consequences. YouTube says most features and programs remain available after a strike, but strikes may affect the channel’s ability to monetize. If a strike is received on an active or archived livestream, live-stream access may be disabled. Three strikes make a channel subject to termination. Deleting the video does not clear a strike. Should you dispute the claim?
YouTube identifies three possible grounds for disputing a Content ID claim: you have the necessary rights, your use qualifies for a copyright exception, or the match is mistaken. Giving credit, owning a copy of the material, or choosing not to monetize the video is not, by itself, a valid reason. Dispute only if you are confident you have a legitimate basis; if the rights are unclear, YouTube suggests seeking legal advice. YouTube Help: Dispute a Content ID claim

What happens after an initial dispute
The claimant has 30 days to respond to an initial dispute. If the claimant rejects it, you may be eligible to appeal. Eligibility and the available options depend on the claim and the information YouTube provides in Studio.
Understand the risk before appealing
After an appeal, the claimant has seven days to respond. It can release the claim, let it expire, or submit a copyright removal request. If YouTube determines that request appears valid, the video can be removed and the channel can receive a strike. If the claimant submits a scheduled removal request after an appeal, YouTube gives you seven days to cancel the appeal before removal and a strike. An appeal is therefore a step with a possible legal-removal consequence, not simply another routine review. YouTube Help: Appeal a Content ID claim

What happens to revenue during a dispute?
If both you and the claimant want to monetize the video, revenue may continue to accrue but is held separately during the dispute and paid to the appropriate party after resolution. If you dispute within five days of the claim, YouTube holds revenue from the claim date; if you dispute later, it holds revenue starting on the dispute date. YouTube Analytics will not show revenue data for a video with an active claim while it is disputed or appealed. YouTube Help: Monetization during Content ID disputes
Revenue considerations do not establish a valid basis for disputing a claim. Base that decision on your rights, a valid exception, or a mistaken match.

What to do if you receive a strike
A strike is different from a Content ID claim and remains consequential even if you remove the video. YouTube says a copyright strike expires after 90 days if you complete Copyright School; check the strike notice and current Studio options for the steps available to your channel. YouTube Help: Copyright strikes
- Read the notice in YouTube Studio to identify whether you have a Content ID claim or a copyright strike.
- For a strike, review the removal details and available resolution options in Studio. Do not assume deleting the video will clear the strike.
- If you believe the removal was mistaken or you have the necessary rights, review the applicable YouTube process carefully. A counter notification is a legal request, so consider qualified legal advice if you are unsure.
Does this apply to gaming livestreams?
Yes. The same distinction applies whether the detected material is music, footage, or another third-party element in a gaming broadcast. A Content ID match can lead to a claim on an archived stream; a live match may prompt a warning or interruption. A copyright removal request that YouTube determines appears valid can remove the video and apply a strike. The fact that a game is being played or streamed does not, by itself, establish permission for every element in the broadcast; check the relevant rights and the game publisher’s streaming guidance.
