What tags can—and can’t—do
YouTube describes tags as descriptive keywords. Its guidance says they can help when a video’s content is commonly misspelled, but otherwise play a minimal role in discovery. It also calls tags helpful but not essential, and says they are primarily used to correct common spelling mistakes. The official live-stream guidance reviewed does not document an extra discovery benefit for tags on a 24/7 stream. That does not prove tags have no effect in any individual case; it means there is no stated special advantage to rely on, and YouTube’s published advice points to a narrow role for tags overall.
What matters more for discovery
Make the title, thumbnail and description clear
YouTube says a video’s title, thumbnail and description are more important metadata for discovery than tags. Make the title tell viewers what is live and what they can expect. Use the thumbnail and description to set expectations about the subject and continuous format rather than trying to compensate with a long list of keywords. Search and recommendations work in different ways
YouTube says Search considers relevance, engagement and quality. Relevance may include how the title, tags, description and video content match a query; engagement can include watch time for that query. Recommendations are personalized: YouTube describes them as shaped by what a viewer watches and enjoys, and by how people respond when content is offered—whether they watch, ignore or dismiss it, and whether they stay. Reach also depends on factors such as topic interest, competition and seasonality. Clear metadata can help describe a stream, but it cannot guarantee impressions. YouTube Help: Search & discovery tips.

How to use tags on a 24/7 stream

Add tags only when they accurately describe the stream or cover a likely misspelling or alternate spelling of its subject, title or proper names.

Write a specific title that lets a potential viewer understand what is live and why it may interest them.

Use the thumbnail and description to explain the stream’s subject and that it is continuous.

If you schedule the stream, consider YouTube’s upcoming-stream listing and subscriber notification option. YouTube documents these as stream-planning features; they are not evidence that tags boost discovery. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

How to judge whether discovery is improving
Look at the stream’s traffic and audience response rather than assuming that adding tags caused a change. Because Search and recommendations involve several factors, a simple before-and-after comparison cannot isolate tags as the cause. YouTube does not publish a statistic in the cited guidance measuring the discovery effect of tags specifically for 24/7 streams, so avoid treating any percentage or anecdotal change as a proven general effect.
