A third-party controller might pair with a Switch, but pairing alone does not show that its motion controls or required buttons will work in the game. Nintendo specifically lists Joy-Con and Joy-Con 2 controllers as supported.
What Nintendo confirms
Nintendo Support says Switch Sports supports paired Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controllers, and a single controller from either family in sports that allow one. Soccer (called Football on Nintendo’s UK page) also has a Joy-Con plus Leg Strap option. The North American Switch Sports FAQ lists these configurations.

Nintendo’s FAQ does not name or endorse third-party Joy-Con-style controllers. That means their compatibility is unconfirmed—not that every third-party model is known to fail. Whether one works depends on the specific controller and the controls and motion features the game needs.
What to check before using a third-party controller
- Motion controls: Check the manufacturer’s specifications for motion controls. A controller can fit the console or pair with it without offering the motion sensing needed for this play experience. For example, HORI’s Split Pad Pro product page says the officially licensed controller has no motion controls; licensing does not make it suitable for motion-based Switch Sports play.
- Single or paired use: The sport you want to play may require a pair or allow one controller. A third-party model’s ability to connect does not confirm that it supports the game’s required configuration.
- Console mode: Nintendo says Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode and recommends TV Mode. The North American FAQ covers supported modes and consoles.
- Leg Strap mode: If you want Soccer/Football’s Leg Strap mode, Nintendo lists Joy-Con plus Leg Strap. Joy-Con 2 cannot be used with the Leg Strap.
These checks help identify likely mismatches, but they are not a Nintendo compatibility guarantee. If you want the strongest match to Nintendo’s documented setup, use official Joy-Con controllers.

- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Controllers and modes that are not supported
Nintendo explicitly says the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller are incompatible with Switch Sports. The game also does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends TV Mode on a Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch 2. See Nintendo’s UK compatibility FAQ for the corresponding regional guidance.
Pairing is not the same as game compatibility
Nintendo’s controller-pairing instructions explain how to pair controllers and select whether they are used together as a grip or individually in horizontal orientation. That setup process does not establish that every paired third-party controller has the motion sensing, buttons, or game-specific support Switch Sports needs.

Nintendo’s regional FAQs broadly agree on the documented Joy-Con configurations, Pro Controller incompatibility, and lack of Handheld Mode support. The sport is called “Soccer” on the North American page and “Football” on the UK page. Nintendo Australia’s Switch 1 FAQ also lists paired or single Joy-Con and Joy-Con plus Leg Strap. Regional pages differ in wording and in whether they include Switch 2 details, so use the support page for your market when checking setup information.
