Short answer: Not as a general, immediate boost. A 2014 study found that frequent action-game players learned a repeated mouse-tracking pattern faster and eventually tracked it more accurately than non-gamers. They did not start with a significant advantage, and they showed no advantage when the target pattern changed from trial to trial. The result is evidence about learning one predictable sensorimotor task—not proof that video games improve coordination across the board or caused the group difference.
What did the study test?
The headline refers to a study by University of Toronto researchers Davood Gozli and colleagues, published in Human Movement Science in 2014. The researchers examined sensorimotor learning: how vision and hand movement work together as someone learns to track a moving target. Their task used a computer mouse, not a game controller or a real-world activity.
The two experiments compared 18 action-game players with 18 non-gamers. The University of Toronto report defined action-game players as people who had played a first-person shooter at least three times a week, for at least two hours per session, during the previous six months. Non-gamers had little or no video-game use during the previous two years.
Participants moved a cursor to follow a target. In one condition, the target followed the same complex pattern repeatedly; in the other, its pattern changed from trial to trial. This design let the researchers distinguish a possible advantage in learning a stable pattern from a general advantage in tracking unfamiliar movement.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
What did the researchers find?
Repeated, predictable pattern
Both groups improved as they practiced the repeated pattern. Action-game players did not perform significantly better at the outset, but they learned the pattern faster and eventually tracked it more accurately than non-gamers.
Changing pattern
When the target’s pattern changed on every trial, the groups did not differ. The University of Toronto report says neither group improved over time in this condition; the paper abstract likewise reports no between-group difference.

The authors’ conclusion was that action-game playing “confers no reliable benefit in sensorimotor control, but it does enhance sensorimotor learning” when a task has consistent, predictable structure. That is a narrower claim than saying games generally sharpen eye-hand coordination.
What the result does—and does not—show
The study’s clearest distinction is between starting skill and learning. The action-game players were not measurably better at the unfamiliar task before practice. Their advantage appeared while they learned a recurring pattern, which suggests an association with learning predictable sensorimotor structure rather than a universal edge in initial coordination.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
- It does show: In this mouse-based experiment, the experienced players learned one repeated target pattern faster and ultimately tracked it more accurately.
- It does not show: That all video games improve coordination, that every action-game player will gain this benefit, or that the result applies to all everyday motor skills.
- It does not establish cause: Participants were grouped by their existing gaming histories; they were not randomly assigned to play games as a training intervention.
The University of Toronto report mentions riding a bike and typing as examples of sensorimotor skills, but those activities were not measured outcomes in this experiment. The study therefore cannot establish that gaming improves either skill.

A different study, published in JAMA Surgery in 2007, examined 33 surgeons and compared game-playing history and performance on three video games with laparoscopic drills. Surgeons in the top tertile of game skill made 47% fewer errors, performed 39% faster, and scored 41% higher on the overall Top Gun score than those in the bottom tertile. These are comparisons within that study’s sample, not evidence that playing games creates surgical skill. Rosser and colleagues described their work as correlational and said causality could not be determined.
