Modern Xbox controllers use Xbox Wireless to connect to Xbox consoles, Bluetooth to connect to many PCs and mobile devices, and USB when connected by a suitable cable. “Wireless” does not automatically mean Bluetooth, and older models—notably Xbox 360 controllers—may not support Bluetooth at all.
Which connection does an Xbox controller use?

Microsoft lists Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth as separate technologies for its current Xbox Wireless Controller: Xbox Wireless is used with Xbox consoles, while Bluetooth is supported for compatible Windows PCs, tablets, iOS devices and Android devices. Exact compatibility depends on the controller model and host device.
Xbox Wireless vs. Bluetooth
Xbox Wireless is Microsoft’s proprietary wireless connection used by compatible Xbox consoles and accessories. Bluetooth is a widely supported wireless standard used by computers, phones and tablets. Both are wireless, but they are not interchangeable: a controller’s Bluetooth support does not mean an Xbox console pairs with it through the console’s ordinary Bluetooth menu.
On Xbox, pair a controller through the console and controller Pair buttons. On a phone or PC, a compatible controller usually pairs in the device’s Bluetooth settings. Some features and accessory behavior can vary by platform and connection method.

Connect a compatible Xbox controller to a Windows PC with Bluetooth
- Turn on the controller by pressing the Xbox button.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button for about three seconds, until it is discoverable.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices. On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth.
- Choose Add device or Add Bluetooth or other device, then select Bluetooth.
- Choose Xbox Wireless Controller when it appears.
Windows labels can differ between releases and updates; Microsoft’s controller connection instructions provide the current pairing guidance. The PC needs Bluetooth hardware, built in or through a compatible USB adapter, and the controller must support Bluetooth.
Connect to an iPhone, iPad or Android device
For a compatible controller, switch on Bluetooth in the phone or tablet’s settings, put the controller into pairing mode with its Pair button, and select Xbox Wireless Controller from the available devices. On iPhone or iPad, the Bluetooth menu is at Settings > Bluetooth. Microsoft notes that if the controller is paired to an Xbox, turning it off before holding Pair can help it appear for mobile pairing.

A successful Bluetooth connection only means the device can see the controller. The game, Xbox Cloud Gaming session, Remote Play session or other app must also support controller input. Device and operating-system compatibility can vary; see Microsoft’s compatibility details.

A compatible USB cable can connect a supported controller to a compatible console or PC without Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless. For gameplay, the cable must carry data; a charge-only cable may power or charge the controller without sending input. If the controller charges but does not work in a game, try a known-good data cable and another USB port.

USB is a useful fallback when the PC has no Bluetooth, pairing is troublesome, or you prefer a wired connection. Microsoft’s USB-C controller bundle includes a 9-foot cable and supports wired connection; the controller can also use Bluetooth on compatible PCs and mobile devices.
Do older Xbox controllers have Bluetooth?
No—not all of them. The current Xbox Wireless Controller supports Xbox Wireless for consoles and Bluetooth for compatible non-console devices, but that capability should not be assumed for every controller carrying the Xbox name.

- Xbox 360 Wireless Controller: It uses the Xbox 360 wireless system, not ordinary Bluetooth pairing. Microsoft’s controller documentation describes a dedicated Wireless Adapter for PC use.
- Xbox One-era controllers: Many later models support Bluetooth, but older revisions may not. Check the exact model’s official specifications rather than relying on the retail name or appearance.
- Third-party or wired controllers: “Xbox-compatible” does not by itself promise Bluetooth. Confirm the manufacturer’s connection specifications.
To identify a Bluetooth-capable model, look for Bluetooth stated explicitly in the product specifications and check the exact model or product identifier. Appearance alone is not a reliable test.

Do you need an adapter for PC?

A generic Bluetooth adapter cannot add Bluetooth capability to a controller that lacks it. If you want Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless connection on PC, a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter may be an option; check current compatibility and availability before buying. USB is often the simplest fallback.

Troubleshoot a controller that will not pair or respond
- It does not appear in Bluetooth settings: Confirm the controller supports Bluetooth, Bluetooth is enabled on the host, and the controller is in pairing mode. Turn it off, then hold Pair again. If it may still be connected to another device, disconnect it there first.
- It keeps reconnecting to an Xbox: Turn it off before putting it into pairing mode for a PC or phone.
- It still does not appear: Toggle Bluetooth off and on, remove an old controller entry, restart the host, then try pairing again. Check the controller and operating-system compatibility.
- Your PC lacks Bluetooth or pairing remains unreliable: Try a USB data cable, a compatible Bluetooth adapter, or a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter.
- The cable charges but gameplay does not work: Replace it with a known-good USB data cable and try another port; the existing cable may be charge-only or faulty.
- It pairs, but a game does not respond: Check whether that game or app supports controllers. Pairing at the operating-system level does not guarantee support in every game.
Firmware or Bluetooth-driver problems are also possible, but no single update is guaranteed to resolve a pairing issue. Microsoft’s controller support page is the appropriate place to check current connection and support guidance.
Which connection should you choose?
- Xbox console: Use Xbox Wireless and pair through the console’s Pair button.
- Bluetooth-equipped PC or mobile device: Use Bluetooth if the controller and device support it.
- PC without Bluetooth, or a controller without Bluetooth: Check compatibility for an Xbox Wireless Adapter or use USB where supported.
- Pairing troubleshooting or a preference for wired play: Use a compatible USB data cable.
