Usually, no: cancelling Xbox Game Pass does not itself delete your synced save. But losing access to a Game Pass catalog game is different from losing the progress saved for it. If your subscription ends and you do not own the game another way, you may be unable to launch it—even if your save remains associated with your Xbox account.
What happens to your save when Game Pass ends?
Xbox save data can be stored on your console or in the Xbox app and in the cloud. Microsoft’s published cloud-save guidance, quoted on a Microsoft Q&A page, says Xbox network keeps important data in sync so you can use another console or switch to a new one. That means a synced save and permission to launch a game are separate. A subscription ending can remove your access to a catalog title without, by itself, erasing the save. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit policy says titles must associate progress and saved state with the users who recorded them; for supported Xbox platforms and generations, it requires save progress to roam when the user is signed in to Xbox network. Before cancelling or switching devices
- Get online and let the game sync. Connect your console or PC to Xbox network, then give the game time to finish synchronizing before you stop playing. An offline session may leave the cloud copy behind your latest local progress.
- Use the same Xbox account. Sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that recorded the save when you return to the game.
- Check your subscription’s displayed end date. Review the date shown in your Microsoft account or subscription settings rather than assuming access ends on a universal date. Xbox Support’s cancellation and recurring-billing page and Game Pass subscription management page are the relevant places to check your account’s terms.
- Confirm the game and platform match. If you plan to resume on another device or buy the game, check that version’s save compatibility. Xbox roaming policy covers supported Xbox devices and generations; it does not establish identical behavior for every PC build, third-party account, or cross-platform version.
If you can no longer launch the game
Renewing Game Pass may restore access if the title is still included in the available catalog and your plan covers it. Buying the game separately may also give you a license to launch it. If you wait without access, the save may still be there, but you cannot assume that a subscription-only license will let you open the game. Catalog membership, plan availability, platform compatibility, and whether your latest save synced are all relevant.

What is not guaranteed
Save behavior can vary by game, platform, publisher account, and whether you played offline. Microsoft’s policy describes user-associated progress and roaming for supported Xbox cases, not a guarantee that every title or cross-platform version will behave identically.
