If you already have a controller, you can start with it rather than buying equipment first. The publisher does not provide a quantified comparison of controller and wheel enjoyment.
Which version of Assetto Corsa runs on PS5?
PlayStation lists the original Assetto Corsa as a PS4 game that can be played on PS5. Its listing cautions that players may encounter errors or unexpected behavior and that some PS4 features may be unavailable. Those are backward-compatibility caveats, not evidence that a wheel is required.

Do not confuse the original game with Assetto Corsa Competizione. PlayStation lists Competizione separately as a PS4/PS5 game and describes improved frame rate and visuals for its PS5 version. Those details apply to Competizione, not the original Assetto Corsa.
What to check before buying a wheel
If you want a wheel for the feel of physical steering and pedals, check that the exact model supports your game and console mode. 505 Games says its console edition works with officially licensed first-party wheels and pedals, but its supported-wheel list is scoped to the PS4 and Xbox One editions. The publisher directs players to manufacturers for current system compatibility, so that list is not a blanket guarantee for every PS5 setup.

One documented PS5 example
HORI’s compatibility page lists the Wireless Racing Wheel APEX for PlayStation 5, model SPF-022U, as compatible with Assetto Corsa on PS5 in PS4 normal mode. The same page lists Assetto Corsa Competizione separately in PS5 normal mode. Keep the game and mode distinctions in mind, and check the current compatibility page for the exact model before purchasing. This is an example of listed compatibility, not a universal recommendation.
Decide whether the optional setup suits you
- Controller: a straightforward way to play without buying or storing a separate wheel setup.
- Wheel and pedals: an option if you prefer physical steering and pedals and are comfortable with the added cost and space.
- Either setup: confirm compatibility with the specific wheel model, game, and mode if you choose to buy hardware.
Those are practical trade-offs, not measured performance or enjoyment differences.
