A wheel is an optional choice, particularly for players seeking a more simulation-oriented experience—not a universal Steam requirement. Check the game’s controller-support badge and hardware notes before you buy.
Can you play Steam racing games without a wheel?
Yes, in many games—but support is title-specific. Steam says that “Full Controller Support” games can be launched and played using only a controller. “Partial Controller Support” means some tasks, such as setup or parts of the interface, may still require a mouse or keyboard. The badge is useful for checking gamepad support, but it does not establish that a particular racing wheel will work. Steam’s Big Picture guidance explains these support labels.
What does a wheel add, and is it required?
Some simulation-focused games recommend a wheel to enhance the experience, but a recommendation is not the same as a requirement. For example, the RaceRoom Racing Experience support listing recommends a steering wheel for its simulation aspect. That is the game’s own guidance, not an independent comparison or proof that other controls cannot be used.
Kart Racing Pro’s Steam listing strongly recommends a wheel while also saying that keyboards, joysticks, and gamepads are fully supported. These examples show why it is best to check each game rather than assume that one rule applies across Steam.

Will Steam support your controller or racing wheel?
Gamepads
Steam Input documents support for common PlayStation, Xbox, Switch Pro, Steam Controller, and DirectInput gamepads. That platform-level support does not guarantee controller support in every game: check the individual game’s Steam support label and controls information. Valve’s Steam Input device documentation lists supported device types.
Racing wheels
Do not treat Steam’s gamepad support as a compatibility guarantee for wheels. Wheels may rely on game-specific support and configuration. Valve’s Steam Input gamepad-emulation guidance notes a limitation: Steam Input does not support remapping generic DirectInput devices when a game supports a racing wheel or flight stick.

Before purchasing a wheel, look for the game’s hardware documentation and verify support for your precise wheel model. Also check whether the game handles the wheel natively and whether menus or setup require a keyboard and mouse.

- Starting out or trying different games: Begin with a gamepad or keyboard if the game you want supports it. This lets you explore without committing to a dedicated wheel setup.
- Focused on simulation play: A wheel may suit your preferred experience, especially when the game itself recommends one. Confirm compatibility for both the game and your wheel before buying.
- Unsure about setup: Check the game’s controller-support label, control options, and hardware notes. For partial controller support, plan on using a keyboard or mouse for some menus or setup.
There is no evidence here that a wheel makes every player faster or that one input method is best for every game. The right choice depends on the titles you want to play, their support, and the experience you prefer. Valve has also described controller choice as a matter of comfort, accessibility, or personal preference in its 2022 Steam Deck booklet.
