Do You Need PS Plus to Play PS5 Shooters Online?

Most paid PS5 shooters require PS Plus for online multiplayer, but Sony names Warzone, Fortnite and Apex Legends as free-to-play exceptions. Check a game's Store listing to confirm.

Usually, yes—if the PS5 shooter is a purchased game. Sony says most paid games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. Its named free-to-play exceptions include Call of Duty: Warzone, Fortnite and Apex Legends, which can be played online without a membership. For any other shooter, check that game’s PlayStation Store listing.

When PS Plus is required for a PS5 shooter

Sony’s general rule is that most purchased games, and most PS4 and PS5 multiplayer games, require a PlayStation Plus membership for online play. That makes a paid shooter the likely case where you’ll need PS Plus, but it is not a rule that every shooter requires it. Sony does not publish a complete shooter-by-shooter list in its general guidance.

Free-to-play shooters that don’t require PS Plus

Sony explicitly names Call of Duty: Warzone, Fortnite and Apex Legends as free-to-play games that do not require membership. Sony’s PlayStation Plus FAQ states: “Most free to play games such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty Warzone do not require a membership.”

This exception applies to the named free-to-play games; it does not establish that all free-to-play shooters or every game mode in every shooter is exempt. For instance, the PlayStation Store identifies Apex Legends as a free-to-play hero shooter and lists online play as required, while Sony’s membership guidance identifies it as an exception to the PS Plus requirement. “Online play required” means an internet connection is needed, not that PS Plus is required.

How to check a specific game’s requirement

  1. Open the game’s listing in the PlayStation Store.
  2. Look for the online-play and PlayStation Plus requirements in the listing details.
  3. If the listing says PS Plus is required, you need a membership for the relevant online multiplayer; if it does not, follow the listing’s stated requirements.

Sony’s online multiplayer guidance tells players to check a game’s PlayStation Store listing to see whether PS Plus is required. Use that check for shooters not named above, and for specific editions or modes where the requirement may differ.

Which PS Plus tier includes online multiplayer?

All three US PlayStation Plus tiers—Essential, Extra and Premium—include online multiplayer. You do not need to pay for a higher tier just to access multiplayer in a game that requires PS Plus. Extra and Premium add other benefits, such as game catalogs and streaming features, described separately on Sony’s PlayStation Plus plans page.
