Which CurseForge app should you install on Windows?
CurseForge offers two separate Windows downloads: a standalone app and an Overwolf version. CurseForge describes standalone as “lightweight” and says the Overwolf version includes in-game features. See the official CurseForge download page for the current choices.
The key decision is whether standalone supports your game and whether you want the Overwolf version’s in-game features. The download page does not specify which features every player needs, so check the details for your game and workflow rather than assuming Overwolf is required.
How to check whether standalone supports your game
- Open CurseForge App – Getting Started.
- Find the supported-game lists for the Windows app options.
- Check the list for the version you intend to install. For example, Minecraft Java Edition appears for both versions, while The Elder Scrolls Online and Runes of Magic are listed for Overwolf but not standalone in the current support article.
- If your game is not listed for standalone, use an option that supports it. Game support can change, so check the current list when you download.
Does the same choice apply on Mac or Linux?
No. CurseForge’s support article identifies the standalone-versus-Overwolf choice specifically for Windows; it does not present that same pair of choices for Mac or Linux. The article says the app supports macOS 12 and higher and official Ubuntu distributions on Linux, with game lists that differ by platform. Check the platform-specific support information rather than applying the Windows options to another operating system.

Can you install Minecraft mods without the CurseForge app?
For Minecraft Java Edition, CurseForge’s manual mod-installation guide explains a route that uses the appropriate mod loader and Minecraft version without the CurseForge app. The guide describes this as more technical. It is a Minecraft Java example, not a general replacement for the app across every game.
Does using CurseForge require an account?
Installing Overwolf and having a CurseForge account are separate questions. CurseForge’s getting-started article identifies subscription perks and World of Warcraft profile sync as account-dependent features; that does not mean an Overwolf installation is required simply to use the standalone app.
