Yes, if you use an adult PlayStation account registered in the UK or Ireland. Sony currently requires age verification for PlayStation voice chat and messaging, along with certain other social features. Without verification, you can still play games and use PlayStation Store, but Sony says the gated features stay unavailable until you verify.
Who needs to verify their age?
Sony’s requirement applies to adult accounts registered in the UK or Ireland; it is not established as a worldwide PlayStation rule. Sony’s official UK and Ireland age-verification FAQ, updated June 1, 2026, says verification is now required to access the listed features. New adult accounts may be prompted during account creation, while existing adult accounts may see a prompt when they try to use a feature that requires verification. Sony says verification is needed once per account; its FAQ does not give a single enforcement hour or a separate deadline for every account.
Sony says it is introducing verification “in line with local law and regulation” to provide an age-appropriate experience and help protect younger users. That is Sony’s stated rationale; the FAQ does not map each restricted feature to a specific legal provision.
What features require age verification?
Sony lists these PlayStation features as requiring verification:

- Some game-specific communication and user-generated-content features, including in-game chat or messaging and sharing or uploading content.
The game-specific restrictions can vary by title and may change as games update their features. Sony’s list does not mean every game’s chat or content-sharing function will necessarily be blocked.
What can you still do without verifying?
Sony says you can continue playing games and access and purchase from PlayStation Store without completing age verification. The restriction applies to the features that require verification, not to all gameplay or every PlayStation service. Choosing “Verify Age Later” lets you continue without verifying immediately, but it does not unlock the gated features.

The PlayStation App supports messaging and party voice chat, according to Sony’s PlayStation App documentation. That documentation does not say using the app bypasses the UK and Ireland verification requirement, so it should not be treated as a workaround.
How do you verify your age?
Follow the verification prompt on your PlayStation account. Sony names Yoti as its age-verification provider and lists mobile-number verification, a facial scan, and ID as options in the flow. The options available to you may depend on the prompt and what information you can provide.

The 3-to-6-minute estimate is Sony’s stated timing for confirming identity after an ID scan, not a promise that the full verification process will always take that long.
What should you know about privacy and browser support?
Sony says Yoti processes information provided for verification and directs users to Yoti’s privacy policy for details about how submitted information is handled. The PlayStation FAQ does not itself set out further data-retention or processing details.

For the verification flow, Sony recommends the latest Chrome on Android; the latest Safari on iOS; the latest Chrome or Safari on Mac; and the latest Chrome or Edge on Windows. These are Sony’s recommendations, not a statement that other browsers cannot work.

If an adult account was created for someone under 18, Sony says it needs to be updated to the appropriate account type, with a parent or guardian managing the process. Use PlayStation’s official account or support flow; do not attempt adult age verification for a child account.
