Yes—if the stream is hosted and sent to YouTube from the provider’s cloud servers. If your PC is running the encoder that sends the video, turning that PC off stops its contribution to the broadcast. The key question is where the video is being played and transmitted: on your machine, or remotely.
What happens when you turn off your PC?
YouTube receives live video from an encoder. YouTube’s setup guidance tells creators to start the encoder to send content and says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” So if your computer is running the encoder and sending the stream, shutting it down stops that encoder from sending video to YouTube.
The same dependency applies to a different device you operate locally. YouTube describes encoders as software apps on a computer or standalone hardware. A hardware encoder can remove the PC from the setup, but it still has to remain powered and operating to send the stream.
When can a 24/7 stream continue with your PC off?
A cloud-hosted prerecorded stream can continue because the provider’s infrastructure—not your PC—plays and sends the video. YouTube’s encoder help page lists Gyre as a “cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of pre-recorded videos on YouTube.” That listing illustrates the cloud-hosted approach; it is not a YouTube endorsement or an uptime guarantee.

Before choosing a cloud service, check its supported video formats and resolutions, recovery behavior, storage and stream limits, price, availability, and terms. The YouTube listing does not verify those details for individual providers, and cloud hosting by itself does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.

Keep a local stream running
If you want your own computer to send the broadcast, use YouTube’s encoder setup and leave the sending device running for as long as you want the stream to continue.

- Activate live streaming if needed. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so allow for that before a planned broadcast.
- Set up the YouTube stream. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the stream URL and key, then enter them in your encoder. Treat the stream key as private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Configure and start the encoder. Use the encoder’s settings for the video you intend to send, then start it so it begins transmitting to YouTube.
- Keep the encoder device and connection running. If the PC sleeps, shuts down, loses power, or loses its network connection, it can no longer send its contribution to the broadcast.
- End the broadcast deliberately. YouTube’s guidance says to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream.
What to know about replays
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise that a longer continuous broadcast will be archived as one complete replay, so do not rely on that outcome for a stream lasting 12 hours or more.
