YouTube automatically enables pre-roll and display ads in that case. Mid-roll ads are a separate setting: choose automatic or scheduled placements, or insert them manually. Even with automatic ads enabled, YouTube does not guarantee that every ad slot will fill or that every viewer will see an ad at the same time.
Which ads can run during a nonstop live stream?
- Pre-roll: YouTube automatically turns this on for a live stream when monetization is enabled.
- Display ads: These are also automatically turned on when monetization is enabled.
- Mid-rolls: You choose whether they are automatic, scheduled, or manual. In manual mode, YouTube does not serve mid-rolls unless you insert a break.
A broadcast running continuously does not change these controls. Automatic means YouTube can decide whether to serve an ad in an available slot; it does not mean every slot receives an ad. Viewers may see automatic mid-rolls at different times, and viewers who do not receive one continue watching the stream. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
Choose how mid-roll timing works

Mid-rolls may appear full-screen or side-by-side. Side-by-side ads can appear automatically on eligible streams, but YouTube says they will not appear when captions are turned on. Eligibility and actual ad delivery are determined by YouTube.
Turn monetization and mid-rolls on or adjust them
- Open YouTube Studio and start a live stream, or select a scheduled stream.
- Open Edit, then Monetization, and make sure monetization is on.
- In the live ad settings, choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. If you choose automatic, select low, medium, or high frequency; if scheduled, choose an interval.
- Save or apply the settings shown for the stream.
YouTube also documents channel-level defaults for monetized channels without rights management: the default is on with automatic-medium recommended. Channels with rights management do not currently have those channel-level settings. The stream-level controls are the relevant place to check the settings for an individual broadcast.

Pause automatic mid-rolls for an important moment
In Live Control Room, use Delay ads to delay automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. YouTube says a five-second countdown appears before automatic mid-rolls resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while the delay control is on, so this is not a way to suppress breaks you insert yourself.
There is also an embed caveat: YouTube says ads are turned off for a live stream when its embedded player is set to auto-start on an external site.

What YouTube’s revenue figure does—and does not—say
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels using automatic live mid-rolls. The comparison measured channels with the feature on against channels with it off across 207 countries in January 2024. It is a platform-reported average from that period, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel, stream, or viewer. Details are in YouTube’s monetization guidance.
